To Not Use Self Sevice Tills

TitusOatesLivesNextDoor · 27/11/2019 10:39

Because:

  1. I'm not employed by the supermarket as a cashier and don't want to work for nothing

  2. They will eventually put cashiers out of work.

I don't like talking about the weather or how my day is with a stranger so self service is my preference.

Hingeandbracket · 27/11/2019 11:11

I like self service tills. It means I can do my shop with zero social interaction.
I don’t mean to be unpleasant; but I find your view very depressing

Gallivespian · 27/11/2019 11:11

I use them. Though I stopped for a while in our nearest Marks and Spencer because the self-service till voice became the voices of bloody Ant and Dec. It was horrifying having them doing their cheeky chappie stuff while I scanned. I assume everyone else also thought so, because the voice has reverted back to Neutral Computer Voice.

poorstudent1010 · 27/11/2019 11:14

I’m in my early 20s and self service tills have been an option for as long as I can remember. Have employees actually been made redundant en masse as a result of the implementation of self checkouts? They just complete other tasks instead surely.

As someone who used to work in retail, serving on tills was the worst part of the job. Very mundane and actually made you feel like you worked a worthless, entry level job. I worked in fashion retail and would much rather be in the sort room and clear or help style customers than be stuck on tills.

ImportantWater · 27/11/2019 11:14

I was in Tesco recently and the chap next to me on the self service tills told me he had never used one before. He was in his 30s, I would say. I found that astounding, but maybe he doesn't do much shopping!

yumscrumfatbum · 27/11/2019 11:16

I like them, all the staff in my supermarket seem to be doing the online shopping orders so I'd be surprised if the self service tills meant less staff. Scan as you shop is the best thing ever, only packing the shopping into the trolley once makes a huge difference for me as I have some health issues that affect the strength in my wrists and arms.

HouseworkAvoider10 · 27/11/2019 11:17

I like them because I can use them to get rid of all my loose small change.

Or, on the other hand, I can use them to break a big note, if needed.

ddl1 · 27/11/2019 11:18

YANBU. I don't use them either, for the reasons that you mention, and because they're a right pain and half the time they don't work!

Dandelion1993 · 27/11/2019 11:18

I find them much quicker and better than a cashier.

I get that customer service is everything but they always seem to chat and make the whole process slower!

ManOfPeeves · 27/11/2019 11:19

I love self service.

I love products not scanning.

I love waiting for alcohol to be "verified".

I love being told I don't have a bag when I do.

I love the lack of human interaction.

I love self service.

lotsofoysters · 27/11/2019 11:19

Have employees actually been made redundant en masse as a result of the implementation of self checkouts? They just complete other tasks instead surely.

Then there's the jobs created by the design, manufacturing and maintenance of the machines. They didn't just spring into existence.

I really don't get the objection to them over "people losing jobs". Are people also sad that washing machines make washer women and laundry services redundant, or are they happy for the convenience. Do they want to bring back petrol station attendants to pump petrol for them. Etc.

IHateBlueLights · 27/11/2019 11:19

I never use them.

SisterSistine · 27/11/2019 11:20

I love the ones where you scan and pack as you go along. All my bags open in the trolley so things can go straight into the right bag. Easy to keep an eye on the bill, and no need to load and unload at the end. Especially good with kids as unloading the trolley on to the belt and then packing the shopping while trying not to lose them and keep up with the cashier is just something I don't need in my life.

TheOrigFV45 · 27/11/2019 11:20

The bloody things give me the rage.

If they want customers to check out their own shopping at least provide a service that works.

Greetings cards are not heavy enough, you have to put your own bag in the bagging area 'just so', there's often not enough staff helping to resolve problems.
Completely defeats the aim if you were not in the mood to talk to someone as not only do you have to talk, you have to try and be patient and explain that the greetings card is not heavy enough, or it's not recognising something, or your child touched the bagging area.

mencken · 27/11/2019 11:21

that news item about the Holborn store was hilarious, what a total foul up.

I like the self-service tills as long as there is a mute button. There is always a staff member around anyway as our Sainsbo needs to give you a voucher for the car park.

but big shops are in Aldi for obvious reasons - friendly and helpful but no jabber, and there are no vouchers slowing things up. Or people who get caught by surprise that you have to pay for shopping so only remember to get out their purse when it is all back in the trolley.

Kazzyhoward · 27/11/2019 11:22

I love self service tills. I hate all the queuing at manned check-outs, usually get stuck behind the ditherer or someone wanting long conversations. I like being in control and getting in/out of the shop more quickly. Hate the fake friendliness of checkout operators.

For all those who don't use them out of principle - do you use cash machines, do you fill up your own car with petrol, do you use pay n display machines at car parks. What about all the lost bank staff, petrol station staff, car park attendants? Do you use self-checkin at airports - what about the check in staff? It's the way forward - get over yourselves.

TitusOatesLivesNextDoor · 27/11/2019 11:22

Fair enough if you like them even though YABU (!) but:

  1. If you are doing the work of an employee for free, you should get a discount on the shopping.

  2. It will still put cashiers out of work
    .

Also, if there are no cashiers available, I generally go and ask for one and most of the time, they open a till or put it through the self service for me.

If they don't, I leave my shopping and go but appreciate not everyone has the time to do this.

Ijustwanttoretire · 27/11/2019 11:24

Did you see the Sainsbury’s documentary which featured their Holborn store going till-less altogether? You just sign up for the App apparently and scan & go.
But they also had a 'hidden' till for people who didn't want to pay by phone. Which is just as well because I will NEVER use my phone to pay, it took me years to risk contactless! Lose/drop down the loo/get mugged for your phone and you're screwed...

LunaAzul · 27/11/2019 11:24

I always use scan as you shop - means I am in and out within an hour for a full food shop.

The handsets weren't working the other week so I had to queue. Took ten minutes to get to my turn and the people in front of me were having full conversations with the checkout woman. They then paid in pennies and three hundred money off vouchers which were all located in the bottom of a handbag...

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 27/11/2019 11:25

I avoid self service tills unless I've no choice. The more people who use them the more jobs will go.

saraclara · 27/11/2019 11:28

Good grief. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face,
Also insisting that someone leaves what they're doing to open a till for you is pretty entitled behaviour. Not to mention the work that someone else has to do to put all your shopping back if you leave it.

You're clearly not really thinking about the staff, because your actions make their life harder.

Fruityb · 27/11/2019 11:30

Love them - I’m happy to scan my own stuff and scan and shop is the best invention ever.

I just get annoyed by people at them that scan the bag last then stand there packing their shopping slowly after they’ve finished. Pack as you go you slowpoke!!

TitusOatesLivesNextDoor · 27/11/2019 11:31

For those questioning if they really have put people out of work:

If Tesco had to employ 20 cashiers for a shift and now, with self-service, they employ 15 then I'm going to take a wild guess and say, yes-they do put people out of work.

If it was more expensive to have self service tills instead of employing cashiers then I'm going to take another wild guess and say they wouldn't have so many self service tills.

It must be cheaper for them and the reason for that is because they don't have to pay a cashier. So, more cashiers out of work!

I love them. OP do you rail against all automation? Are you old enough to remember when there was an attendant at a petrol station who filled your car for you or a check in person at the airport who issued your boarding card or when there were no ticket machines at train stations or secretaries who used to type letters for professionals? Try and unclench.

TitusOatesLivesNextDoor · 27/11/2019 11:32

It is not entitled, in a supermarket, to ask the supermarket to employ a cahier to put your goods through the till!

Heavens above!
