Are there a disproportionate amount of Scots on MN?

AIBU in thinking there is a disproportionately large amount of Scots on MN? Before I continue, there is absolutely nothing 'wrong' with this, just an observation.

I very often see on the "what are you doing today" threads posted on a Sunday that they are going to the supermarket at 9am... where England and Wales don't have extended Sunday trading hours. Or lots of "I'll be voting SNP at the general election".

Anyone else noticed this? I wonder what the percentage of active users are English, Welsh, Irish, Scottish, and others?

Hello from Parkhead, Glasgow!

Hello from just down the road! I'm in Springboig/Shettleston Grin

Deux · 27/11/2019 15:06

I’ve never heard of pockies but I’m a teuchter. Anyone got a semmit on today?

Amortentia · 27/11/2019 15:10

We've nothing else to do but sit on mumsnet all day because if we go outside, we're likely to get attacked by a haggis 😏

Or freeze to death, it’s Baltic today.

I thought I’d traveled extensively around England but even I was baffled to find myself outside a 24h Asda on a Sunday morning with no idea why it was shut. I think I’m just so used to living in Glasgow which has every amenity you could ever want, and it’s mostly available 24/7.

GrungeBetty · 27/11/2019 15:12

No semmit as it’s mild the day! Another Teuchtar over here living in Glesga noo. :)

amusedbush · 27/11/2019 15:15

Fellow Scots, anyone familiar with the term pockies?

Yep, I'm from the east coast and mittens were always pockies. Not heard it since I moved to Glasgow though.

If there is something you need to remember by mum tells you to "stick a note in yer pockie" Grin

ThisIsSunrise · 27/11/2019 15:20

I’m a Scot but don’t live there. I’m not sure how to decide if I count or not.

I’m not in my seemit.

Bcnamechanger · 27/11/2019 15:25

I'm wearing a semmit so I don't need a cost for a few more weeks.

Ah ken whit pawkies ur but it's too warrum fur thum.

What do folk think of the idea that we're more obvious on here rather than disproportionate? I hypothesise that it's because our cultural interlocutors are a wee bit different and that people pick up on the differences, making us more obvious.

After all, wha's like us?

I mean... no? This site is constantly filled with questions about "Year X" school students and GSCEs/A Levels and reporting to the Board of Governors or arguments about Labour vs Tory like there's no other parties.

To be honest, I struggle on here to find other Scottish people to communicate with. It feels like we are few and far between.

AllStarBySmashMouth · 27/11/2019 15:30

Although clearly there are a lot of us gathered here Grin

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 27/11/2019 15:38

There aren’t enough of us though to make an impact in a lot of conversations.

Go to the Board of Governers, Call Ofstead, Year 9, Go to minor injuries.....Why are you at school, it’s August so I think this thread is completely made up....

The go-to assumption is still that everyone has the same experience

BlueBirdGreenFence · 27/11/2019 15:39

I've just moved to Scotland and everyone told me it'd be cold. I laughed it off as sure it can't be that much different to Belfast. Ah Ken -just learnt that word after eventually having to ask someone- now how wrong I was! I've added another layer of clothing on every week since I started my new job...

selfhelpneeded · 27/11/2019 15:39

@BathshebaKnickerStickers what's wrong with 'go to minor injuries'?

dementedpixie · 27/11/2019 15:43

I'm in Scotland and we have a minor injuries unit in our A&E department. We dont have walk in out of hour departments though, we have to ring nhs24 for an appointment

angemorange · 27/11/2019 15:44

Checking in from South Lanarkshire. Yes I think we do gather here in droves actually. No idea why though. Lots of witty vipers in Scotland? I sound exactly like Lorraine Kelly if you want to read in my accent. GrinAngry Off tae the shoap noo.

PotatoesDieInHotCars · 27/11/2019 16:03

Maybe Scottish people are just really bad at life and need lots more advice.

Kidding!

I can make that joke cos some of my best friends know people who have family who are married to Scottish people. Ye ken?

amusedbush · 27/11/2019 16:11

amusedbush · 27/11/2019 16:22

AND I just got Norn Iron

A while ago a MNer posted to ask how people managed to live life without owning an iron. However she called the thread "calling all non ironers" and it caused much confusion Grin
