To take my toddler to work...?

DS developed a temperature at nursery. My DH left work to pick him up. Nursery policy means he has to be kept off for 48 hours. Fair enough. I thought it would be considerate to let work know asap that I would need to look after my DS on the second day as DH took the first day to look after him. However work claim this isn't an unforeseen illness and are insisting that I apply for dependency leave (which would be granted but possibly without pay). AIBU to take my toddler in to work...? He's not 100% but also not horribly ill.

Are you for real? It’s people like you who happily spread infectious diseases and cause school closures because you “can’t take the financial hit right now.”

Neither can the parents of other kids you infect.

Apologies if someone’s already suggested this but in this situation if you are entitled to paid sick leave and generally do not take many/any sick days I would call in sick (having suddenly come down with the bug the child had). I confess I have done this once having been up all night with a puking toddler. However that’s the only sick day I’ve had in 2.5 years.

48 hours after a temp is such overkill! my dd1 would get a temp with teething. the childminder would give Calpol and cuddles with no time off. even a virus she'd take and adjust her day if I had a big meeting or something. only off if d&v or hfm and ill with it. even offered to have her for chickenpox as others all had it and would stay home but didn't need her to.

My head used to let me take mine into school with me whenever the holidays were different - which they always were- they loved it.

What world are you living in, not the real one obviously. What would it be like if other staff also took their toddlers into work the same day as you?. How exactly will you do your work? Children get sick, surely you know this. Any childminders who would take your DC for the day? Sorry but it is something as a parent you have to manage, childrens being ill.

I'm going against the grain here, schools are so obsessed with staff attendance, I'd ask your boss what they think. The assistant header our school used to bring her kids in when sick and make a bed for them in the nurture unit/thrive room or similar. But think it would have been frowned on if I had as an hlta. Not least cos mine went to that school!

I agree with what others have said about if he’s too unwell to be at nursery, where he will infect other children he definitely shouldn’t be at a school where he will come into contact with children as well.

Also, that aside, I’m guessing having him at your work with you will age t the adult to child ratios which the school has to abide by!!!

So your whole school can come down ill in time for Christmas but at least you'll be OK!

A teacher friend of ours was told in no uncertain terms that because of his job he had to take more days off work, 'I don't want a queue of snotty kids outside the door!'
