To wonder why MN hates Dublin?

I am Irish. I'm watching the Irish version of newsnight and it's all about MN bad reviews of Dublin. We have lots of problems here but I don't get that people would dislike us that much?

I love Dublin. I didn’t get that thread at all. Dublin is one of my favourite cities in the world.

HollyCarrot · 26/11/2019 22:10

@scarydinosaurs the programme was based specifically Mumsnet complaints about Dublin. I get it is expensive etc but was surprised how negative the comments were tbh.

I grew up in County Dublin and I love it. Not keen on Dublin city at all though. My siblings like it although only one has chosen to actually live there.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 26/11/2019 22:13

Speaking as someone who has been gone a long time, culturally we are hyper sensitive to external criticism. As a British based site, despite most of the comments probably coming from Irish nationals, that inferiority complex is never far from the surface.

HollyCarrot · 26/11/2019 22:16

Treadsoftly (love your name!) I just found it quite shocking that prime time picked up on this. Maybe a slow news day but a bit unfair because London is hardly cheap like.

I live in Dublin, close to the city, and I love it but I can understand visitors' comments about how expensive everything is here. But the comments about there being nothing to do are frankly nonsense.
Can't believe Prime Time featured Mumsnet!

Scarydinosaurs · 26/11/2019 22:19

@HollyCarrot yes I read the thread that I imagine that they based the segment on. I thought it was ridiculous and didn’t recognise the city they were complaining about.

I’ve never had a bad time in Dublin.

BingoLittlesUncle · 26/11/2019 22:22

I have visited a number of major cities in Europe but Dublin is the only one where we ran out to cash as our budget for the three days was spent in two and I was reduced to cashing a cheque (OK this was a while ago) at our hotel's reception.

Northernsoullover · 26/11/2019 22:23

I remember the thread. I didn't post on it but I remember thinking about my visit to Dublin. I had a great time but I wouldn't go back. I certainly didn't hate it. It just didn't set my world on fire.

recrudescence · 26/11/2019 22:23

Been twice and loved it. Didn’t enjoy my Ryanair flights however.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 26/11/2019 22:26

I love Dublin! Been for a few city breaks there and had a great time.

BumbleBeee69 · 26/11/2019 22:27

I've never read a single comment on here slating Dublin Hmm

where are these 'alleged' comments then ?

HollyCarrot · 26/11/2019 22:29

I lived in Dublin for the last 15 years and left because it was too unstable (renting, childcare etc) but as a holiday destination it's alright. I'm just surprised MN would be so judgemental of it.

champagneandfromage50 · 26/11/2019 22:29

Dublin is a mini expensive version of Glasgow. My friend lives there, I did a hen there and a wedding. It just reminded me of where I grew up when out late, blokes drooling over you. Taking the piss if your not interested, an air of violence, as dislike of the English, ( I am Scottish btw) my OH was a best man and was ignored by a Dublin wedding party and mocked

ThatsMeInTheSpotlight · 26/11/2019 22:31

MN doesn't hate Dublin. If it's the thread I'm thinking about, there were as many posters saying there was lots to do as there were posters moaning.

Lots of MNers aren't in London, so Dublin is expensive compared to many cities in the UK.

BitOfFun · 26/11/2019 22:32

MN isn't a hive mind!

SlightlyBonkersQFA · 26/11/2019 22:35

I saw that in the irish times the other day. I hope this thread doesn't go the same way. One person has already given a second serving.

HollyCarrot · 26/11/2019 22:36

I suppose I'm gobsmacked that Prime Time (our News Night) did a whole segment based on Mumsnet. And it wasn't positive.

misspiggy19 · 26/11/2019 22:37

I found it expensive, dirty and boring to be frank. A city but not a city.

wigglybeezer · 26/11/2019 22:38

I'm Scottish too, I thought Dublin was too like a Scottish city to thrill me! Far too familiar but not a patch on Edinburgh, and when I went there years ago ( gosh probably 25+) it was pre tourist boom and it was a bit grotty!

Expensive yes, dirty quite possibly but only boring if you haven't done your research imo.

OP posts:
MaxNormal · 26/11/2019 22:40

I might have been one of those posters. The reason I'm not keen on Dublin is that it's just not a particularly beautiful city. It felt ordinary. It was also quite grubby feeling and yes very expensive.
And quite a hostile air at points.

wigglybeezer · 26/11/2019 22:41

I enjoyed a trip out into the countryside outside Dublin though!

SlightlyBonkersQFA · 26/11/2019 22:41

oh here we go again! ffs.
