To wonder why MN hates Dublin?

I am Irish. I'm watching the Irish version of newsnight and it's all about MN bad reviews of Dublin. We have lots of problems here but I don't get that people would dislike us that much?

I’m off to Ireland next weekend for a city break with some friends. Been a few times before, want to avoid temple bar etc, can anyone recommend any nice cocktail or wine bars with a nice atmosphere etc? (Sorry, bit off topic Blush )

Mayflower01 · 28/11/2019 10:06

Sorry, should’ve said Dublin rather than Ireland!

Emeraldshamrock · 28/11/2019 12:46

Are you staying in the city centre. Dawson street has lots of great restaurants.
Harcourt street has dicey it also has copper face Jack's though the nick name is slapped face Jack's so I'd avoid it.
There are lots on the outside of the city it depends where you are staying.
Swords has a good night life of you're staying near the Airport.

Emeraldshamrock · 28/11/2019 12:48

Dicey's is good on Harcourt street.
The church restaurant bar is also good but expensive.

Emeraldshamrock · 28/11/2019 12:48

@Mayflower01 ☝️ I forgot to tag you.

Emeraldshamrock · 28/11/2019 12:50

For bands gigs Whelan's on Wexford street.
I'll shut up now. Grin

caketree93 · 28/11/2019 12:53

I'm from Dublin and I wholeheartedly agreed with everything MN had to say. Dublin is crap and just cant admit it to itself

Emeraldshamrock · 28/11/2019 13:00

@caketree93 Okay caketree.
It is over crowded grey but many enjoy themselves it is not completely without charm. Hmm

SillyUnMurphy · 28/11/2019 13:03

I loved Dublin when I went but I have to say that I love Galway much much more. DH's parents are from there and it is one of my favourite places in the world.

Emeraldshamrock · 28/11/2019 13:04

I love Galway. Donegal is beautiful picturesque in the summer.

PopcornAndWine · 28/11/2019 13:41

Hi @Mayflower01 try La Cave wine bar on South Anne Street, Olesya's and basement of Fallon & Byrne, both on Exchequer Street. For cocktails, try Peruke & Periwig on Dawson Street.

Mayflower01 · 28/11/2019 13:46

Thanks Guys! Yes, staying in Dublin City centre x

Stickybeaksid · 28/11/2019 16:34

@Mayflower01 The exchequer bar on exchequer street for cocktails or a nice pint. For atmosphere try Davy byrnes or the duke off Grafton street. Lemon and Duke nice for fancier drinks. To eat best places are around lower George’s street and Camden street. Please don’t go to copper face jacks or diceys, they are student haunts or for when you are too drunk to go other places. The iveagh hotel on Harcourt street is lovely for drinks and food. Sophie’s at the dean also on harcourt street is a cool rooftop restaurant which does brunch and dinner. You need to book though. Open table is a great website for city centre dinner bookings.

Oh and if you like pizza try PI at the bottom of George’s street. Best pizza you will ever eat

I like people from Dublin and the city itself, but I hate the feeling in Dublin city. Mean streets.

I am from Limerick so not easily frightened but I wouldn't go near the place. It's such a pity because it's a beautiful city, if they could only sort it out.

havingtochangeusernameagain · 28/11/2019 16:44

I have never actually visited anywhere that I hated

Me neither (for a holiday), though I'm probably quite closed minded about where I'd go in the first place. For example, not Dubai.

Maybe the odd attraction, there was a rather awful place on Guernsey and another one on the Gower - both run down and needing quite a lot of investment. But cities in themselves, I can't actually think of any offhand that I have disliked (other than a couple I've been to for work or to get to somewhere else and which are not marketed as tourist attractions). Not keen on the lifestyle in Spain, ie the late eating, but that's a different thing.

3luckystars · 28/11/2019 17:02

Yes to the person that asked has it gotten worse over the last 7 years, yes it has.

I used to be up there quite a lot and always enjoyed it, and didn't go there for a few years and was shocked at how menacing it felt when I returned there 3 years ago. There is a terrible atmosphere, drug addicts shooting up on the main street. People in very bad shape everywhere, its appalling.

Mean Streets is right.

My husband is from Cork but has lived here for about 30 years.

He loathes Dublin with a passion. I just don't get it. I love the place.

In fairness, @Ibiza2015, it's practically a rule to qualify as a Corkonian.

'Were you born within the sound of Shandon's bells?'
'Yes.'
'Do you know all verses of 'The Banks'?
'Yup.'
'Is Dublin a shithole full of ugly jackeens who'd steal the eye out of your head?'
'Definitely!'
'Grand, so. You're in.' Grin

Emeraldshamrock · 28/11/2019 19:20

@Ibiza2015 🤣
It is very normal.
Corkonian's hates the Dubs for being Jackeen's going back to the pale the Dub's think Corkonian's are jealous they are bigger but not better to be the Capital. 🤣
It is usually in jest and banter, I've never known it to be anything other than banter.
I've met many Corkonian's lots of jeering and belly laughs.
I worked with a Cork chap his mam was in a wheelchair he use to call her his meals on wheels, she loved it. 🤣

It!s time for the politicians to sort out the crime - in collaboration with the Gardai and judges to stop handing out soft sentences.

PlumsGalore · 28/11/2019 20:35

British here and I love Dublin. I love the people, the fact that it is another country but so like home and it’s only a 40 minute flight from Leeds. DD lives near Leeds and Bradford airport, she flies to see her friend in Dublin for the day, first flight out, 4pm flight back. Lunch, wine and a catch up and cheaper than getting the train to see a different friend in Liverpool.

What’s not to love?

AryaStarkWolf · 29/11/2019 14:40

@Emeraldshamrock We are the Real capital though Grin
