To wonder why MN hates Dublin?

I am Irish. I'm watching the Irish version of newsnight and it's all about MN bad reviews of Dublin. We have lots of problems here but I don't get that people would dislike us that much?

OP posts:

I’ve got a grin up kid living in Dublin and one living in London, so I do regular weekend visits to both.

In my experience London is cheaper, more vibrant and surprisingly, more friendly, in terms of locals chatting in to you.

It makes me a bit sad because I first went to Dublin 30 years ago and loved it so much. But it’s changed a lot and not all for the better.

Mitsouko67 · 26/11/2019 23:52

All agog. News to me. I missed that thread.

Didn't know Mumsnet was even that well known in Ireland.

BitOfFun · 26/11/2019 23:53

I agree that it certainly isn't boring: I'm fascinated by the history. I'm also enjoying binge-reading Tana French novels at the moment Grin. I've visited it and enjoyed it, but it does seem terribly expensive to live in.

OhHellllooooo · 27/11/2019 00:01

According to this article, London (among other European cities) is considered more expensive than Dublin: moneyinc.com/20-expensive-cities-europe/
Also states that the cost of living might go down due to Brexit Grin

itwaseverthus · 27/11/2019 00:02

I love Dublin and it's people. First went around 25 years ago and been back many a time. Definitely seen some changes that don't feel like improvements but the craic is as good as ever. Definitely avoid the Temple bar trap mind you.

Why is it so expensive now though?

cam326 · 27/11/2019 00:07

Why is it so expensive now though?
Because Ireland is a fantastic country to live, and Dublin is where most the decent jobs are. Hence renting in Co.Dublin is roughly equivalent to London zone 2/3. Buying is somewhat cheaper but still pricey. Everydya stuff costs more than in the UK but salaries are roughly 20% higher.

BBInGinDrinking · 27/11/2019 00:08

I wasn't aware of the other thread. Like many cities nationally and internationally Dublin has suffered from the influx of Hen and Stag parties. Other than that, I love it. I wouldn't live there, but then I wouldn't live in any city now. But to live nearby and visit, or to holiday there? Definitely.

managedmis · 27/11/2019 00:25

Can't believe Prime Time featured Mumsnet!

^

Me too. Christ.

I visited last Christmas and tbh wasn't impressed.

Here's why :

Nothing majorly unique, it's just like a lot of UK cities. I could have been in Preston tbh.
Scruffy, dare I say rough, on the outskirts. Seemed unkempt.

The Guinness museum has been Disney-fied. I went in 2000 and it was glorious, nowadays it's expensive, touristy and they had some sort of karaoke on the 'free' bar on the 8th floor or whatever. You're in Ireland ffs. I want real Irish fiddlers, live ones, please! 25 euros each or whatever and you're booming out the YMCA for folks? Non.

Will not name and shame but the four star hotel we stayed in reminded me of the hotel out of a notoriously funny 70's comedy with John Cleese.

BUT in I s defence the Irish were lovely and we do want to go back and do the country itself.

managedmis · 27/11/2019 00:28

However this place: www.thegreenhen.ie/
made our weekend. Superb food.

Emeraldshamrock · 27/11/2019 00:31

Yes I read it. I thought their comments were very apt. It is over priced for food, drink, entertaining especially around Temple bar, it is dreary wet and has little entertainment to offer in the centre.
Now if I was planning a visit to Ireland from the UK I'd visit Kerry Donegal Galway and the countryside part of Cork.
Ireland would be lovely to visit a few counties over the week.

PaneerOfEvil · 27/11/2019 00:38

Why is it so expensive now though?
Because Ireland is a fantastic country to live, and Dublin is where most the decent jobs are.

Sorry but to me this doesn’t explain why it’s so expensive?

Discustard · 27/11/2019 00:39

I like Dublin, but my dad's from there so my visits usually revolve around seeing family, local pubs, none of the touristy crap. Nothing seems more costly than southeast UK, maybe cigs and tobacco!

Emeraldshamrock · 27/11/2019 00:42

What about the farmers?!
The city was like a movie today, all the tractors blocking the city streets at the Dail. I had to walk for miles.
Anyone travelling the M50 in the morning the rumour around TFI is the tractors are blocking the motorway on the morning. ☘
Happy travelling.

Emeraldshamrock · 27/11/2019 00:46

Why is it so expensive now though?
Investment. Increased Population. Supply and demand the more people the higher charges for rent, medical care, the wages are good even basic jobs pay €10 to €11 per hour. The wages do reflect the cost of living though.

PandaPantaloon · 27/11/2019 00:53

I'm irish living in Ireland and I avoid Dublin. It is dirty, I dont think it is particularly nice to look at, it's expensive, there is also a very prominent, in your face drug problem. If you are looking for vibrancy and 'that feeling' that someone mentioned earlier then imo Galway is far superior. I get 'that feeling' everytime I walk down Shop Street on a sunny day, which to be fair isnt that often given how much it rains here.

SlightlyStaleCocoPops · 27/11/2019 01:05

"'ve never read a single comment on here slating Dublin"

You must be new here.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 27/11/2019 01:14

I'm Irish and not a fan of Dublin, although I've got many friends there. I much prefer Cork or Belfast (lived in both). I'm also not a huge fan of my own home city Derry, but hardly anyone weekends there anyway.

BitOfFun · 27/11/2019 01:27

Ah, I enjoyed Derry, Always.

Squigean · 27/11/2019 07:24

I live in Dublin, don't particularly like it (city centre wise). I can totally get why people don't like it.

@Emeraldshamrock city centre was surreal yesterday!! I left the office and couldn't figure out what the heck was going on - flashing blue lights and gardi on the end of every road. 102% congestion was the last stat I read!!

StrayWoman · 27/11/2019 07:32

I think most of the other thread was about it being very expensive, bad traffic and dirty. Which tbf is pretty factual.

I live in Cambridge which is jammed with tour buses, stupidly expensive and pretty boring - I wouldn't come here on a trip as a tourist. But I still get a bit defensive when people slag it off.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/11/2019 07:45

^Because Ireland is a fantastic country to live, and Dublin is where most the decent jobs are.*

Sorry but to me this doesn’t explain why it’s so expensive^

But that's exactly what people say about London - fantastic city and where all the jobs are.

To answer your question OP, I think the simple answer is that Mumsnet is disproportionately well off London/SE dominated and a lot of those people don't really like anywhere that's not London and will always make comparisons and say that London is better due to a vague subjective claim about buzz and energy, ignoring the similarities with Dublin that they cite as reasons to hate Dublin (expense, congestion, pollution etc).

Emeraldshamrock · 27/11/2019 07:48

The south side of the city is very nice.
Grafton street, St Stephens green, Merrion road Ballsbridge, very expensive.
The rich side if you like.
I love all the Georgian houses at the embassies.
