To spend THIS much on a haircut?!

Do you think £79 is too much to spend on one haircut?

I've lost count of the disappointing, bad cuts I've paid for; my hair is really tricky and many stylists just don't do a good job. So for years I asked my non hairdresser DH to cut it and patted myself on the back for saving money.

Anyway, I won a runner up prize in a local raffle last spring; a haircut at the very posh salon in town, and I had the most amazing haircut by the salon owner. My hair looked amazing for a couple of months as it grew, it still looked great.

It's looking shit again now, and I looked up the cost of seeing the same hairdresser - it's just shy of £80. Another member of staff at the same salon would be £45-50.

What would you do? I can afford it, but I find it very, very hard to spend money on myself without good reason.

Mine was regularly that and up to €175 with a colour.

dementedma · 26/11/2019 20:08

If you can afford it and it makes you feel good, then do it. I wouldn’t personally, but I can’t afford to so it’s a non-issue.

MarshaBradyo · 26/11/2019 20:08

Go for it

Snowfalling · 26/11/2019 20:09

Go for it op. You wear your hair every single day, you will feel great every single day for months. Price per wear, it's the best value purchase. X

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 26/11/2019 20:10

I personally think its a lot but that's because proportionate to my income it certainly is. However if I had the money available and the cut was worth spending more on then why not?

30to50FeralHogs · 26/11/2019 20:11

Plenty of people spend more than that regularly on cuts and colour, so go for it.

Just make sure you take pics of it when you had it done before and double check its the same person doing it!

My mum had the most amazing colour done once, but when she went back to the same guy he couldn't remember how he'd done it and she was never able to get it done the same way again Grin Lets hope your stylist is a bit more consistent!

Thehop · 26/11/2019 20:12

Go!!! And pay for the owner to do it

Tink88 · 26/11/2019 20:13

If you can afford it then yes. I spend 80 every 8 weeks on mine that's about standard here.
If you have had trouble finding a good stylist then I would pay it for someone your happy with.

rookiemere · 26/11/2019 20:13

It is an expensive hair cut but it sounds as if it was worth it for you. Work out the max you can eke out the cut for and go for it. Also worth checking if they do cuts without the blow dry as that can sometimes be taken out and may save £20+.

I wouldn't bother going for a cheaper stylist at the same salon, generally someone either gets your hair or they don't and usually it takes someone with more experience.

Brimful · 26/11/2019 20:15

Price per wear

I'd not thought about it like that, thank you. It really helped my confidence when it was cut so beautifully. I just keep thinking ''that's two weeks' food shopping''.

There was a time in my life where I had to budget every penny and had no spare cash so haircuts still feel like a luxury. I still can't believe I'm considering it!

Mine costs about £100 every 10 weeks. I should have it done more often but I can’t really be bothered!

poorstudent1010 · 26/11/2019 20:17

I wouldn’t for a cut - I don’t have a budget for colour though!

What exactly looks so shit about your hair? Is there anything about your hair that makes a cut complicated? (Eg damaged/curly/fine) how do you get it cut?

If your hair is unremarkable I’m sure the cheaper stylist can get it looking decent. They probably use extremely similar techniques as they work in the same salon.

Scarydinosaurs · 26/11/2019 20:19

Pay it. It makes all the difference.

poorstudent1010 · 26/11/2019 20:20

Having said that, I pay £60 for a cut every 8 weeks. which is literally just a 1cm trim as I’m growing it out, so I’m probably bitter about wasting my own money!

KnightandDay · 26/11/2019 20:21

Do it! You sound like you really liked the cut, and a good hairdresser is worth their weight in gold!
Go, enjoy, love your hair again!

Spied · 26/11/2019 20:21

Go.
Your hair has the power to really make you feel good (or bad).
See it as self-care.
If you keep up the maintenance and go for a trim ever 8 weeks then that's only £10 a week on feeling fabulous.
If you do keep up with the trims and it maintains it's overall shape then its likely you'd also be happy with the other stylists at the salon for a trim

HeckyPeck · 26/11/2019 20:21

I get the impression that you don’t spend any money on yourself.

You can afford it and £79 on yourself every couple of months is not being over indulgent at all.

Go for it OP!

Waterandlemonjuice · 26/11/2019 20:21

Do it!

Pippapotomus · 26/11/2019 20:22

Try a cheaper stylist then go to the original one if it doesn't compare?

It might be the difference of a professional vs your husbands diy job.

Pipandmum · 26/11/2019 20:22

Isn't feeling good about yourself a good enough reason? You said you've spent loads on bad haircuts, now you've found a stylist who can do a great job and you're hesitating? Book it now!

Aquamarine1029 · 26/11/2019 20:23

I think the additional cost is 100% worth it. You're definitely worth it! Grin

Also, the added confidence in knowing your hair looks fantastic is really good for your well-being. If you're financially stable I would go back to them and not think another thing about it.

cheeseislife8 · 26/11/2019 20:23

Do it, you wear your hair every day and for me that's worth the money if you can afford it!

RingTheBellAlready · 26/11/2019 20:23

Two weeks food shopping? Do you have kids? Lol. That's just one week for us now, if we're lucky. Lol.
But yes go for it if you can afford it! Smile

Brimful · 26/11/2019 20:25

Is there anything about your hair that makes a cut complicated?

Well every hairdresser (except this one) I have been to in the past has ended up swearing and getting frustrated with my hair.

It is very, very thick but fine. It's wavy but not curly, and has a mind of its own - stubbornly. It's quite frizzy and looks either too dry or too greasy.

Straighteners will only work for a short while before it rebounds where-ever it fancies going. It looks shit now because it grows fast but at different rates in the layers so it looks messy, prone to split ends too.

In the winter I wear a lot of hats...maybe I'll let the hats see me through winter and think about booking a cut somewhere next Spring!

I spent years with shitty cheap haircuts too, and now I've vowed I'll never do that again. As you get older you should feel able to invest in yourself and your confidence. Why the hell not? You're not getting any sort of badge for getting your DH to cut your hair (and oh good god I can't believe you did that!)
