To spend THIS much on a haircut?!

Do you think £79 is too much to spend on one haircut?

I've lost count of the disappointing, bad cuts I've paid for; my hair is really tricky and many stylists just don't do a good job. So for years I asked my non hairdresser DH to cut it and patted myself on the back for saving money.

Anyway, I won a runner up prize in a local raffle last spring; a haircut at the very posh salon in town, and I had the most amazing haircut by the salon owner. My hair looked amazing for a couple of months as it grew, it still looked great.

It's looking shit again now, and I looked up the cost of seeing the same hairdresser - it's just shy of £80. Another member of staff at the same salon would be £45-50.

What would you do? I can afford it, but I find it very, very hard to spend money on myself without good reason.

My god I thought you were going to say it was 300 quid or something! That’s the most I’ve ever spent on a haircut and honestly I think it was a bit much. Really lovely celebrity hairdresser though. Wouldn’t even think twice in your situation and I am on a v low income.

oohnicevase · 26/11/2019 22:09

Just do it .. it's with it if it gives you confidence .

L0bstersLass · 26/11/2019 22:14

Do it.

FFSFFSFFS · 26/11/2019 22:14

I just spent £300. (GULP)

Lovely and very subtle hidden pink highlights and the best cut ever.

Changed. My. Life.

It's amazing. And won't be as expensive for top ups but still won't be cheap. But I find that if I don't have a good haircut Im miserable. Maybe I shouldnt be - but there you go

Pugsleyaddams · 26/11/2019 22:22

Do it. Your hair is everywhere you are, it sounds like the cut took a good while to start looking ropey (as a good cut should) and you deserve it, assuming it's affordable. I'm guilty of similar, I don't look after myself, use products on the cheap, don't take care of myself and feel shitter and shitter, probably spend a similar amount on cheap stuff that doesn't work so gets discarded. Then I feel so shit I get my hair cut, do the other things (which are irrelevant here but relevant in terms of spending money on looking after myself) and feel great, happier, more confident, then...let it slide again. 🙄

Bluntness100 · 26/11/2019 22:23

Good god, do it, there is no price in feeling good about yourself. Mine costs that every four weeks. Totally worth it.

SevenStones · 26/11/2019 22:23

Just do it, OP!

My hair costs £170 to cut and colour, and up till quite recently I only had it done a couple of times a year and put up with it looking shit for a couple of months each time before the next appointment was booked.

Then I thought, fuck it! And I now have it done three times a year. I view it as something nice I have done for myself in an otherwise non spendthrifty life!

HollowTalk · 26/11/2019 22:27

My sister had her hair cut by John Frieda once - she won a competition - and it looked absolutely fantastic. I don't know how much he would've charged but it looked great for months.

SonjaMorgan · 26/11/2019 22:33

Surely this depends on how much money you have and where your priorities lie. I cut my own hair with the kitchen scissors and occasionally stick a Poundland dye on it. My sister spends £80 every 6 weeks on a cut and colour. I wouldn't say either of us are happier. It's your money, do what you want with it.

justforthisnow · 26/11/2019 22:41

OP
Do it, you deserve it.

Girlking · 26/11/2019 22:42

I am one of Toni&Guys top models and have been for over 20 years, I have very long very thick hair ( my mother used to say it was like a horse’s tail which I thought was a terrible insult but realise now it was a compliment) it costs me £15 for a cut . The trainee is monitored through the whole process and the manager oversees everything and cuts one side and corrects any problems the trainee hasn’t quite mastered. My hair looks amazing afterwards and I get stopped by strangers to ask me who my hairdresser is . If I have my roots done they match the colour of my natural colour exactly (I’m a redhead so difficult to get right) it costs £21. Their model days are normally Wednesday from 11.30am and they do cuts on Wednesday from 4pm so timing/days aren’t flexible but as I am self employed it suits me fine. I have to pay full price in December as they don’t have model appointments then and I actually prefer when I go as a model as there is no leeway for mistakes due to the constant monitoring of the trainer. Some people might find the 3/4 hour appointment tedious but for me it is the highlight of my month! Reading Grazia magazine, tea/coffee/biscuits/ massage chairs/ head massage/top products/lovely staff/top blow dry. Going on Thursday for a cut , can’t wait 😊

Ellie56 · 26/11/2019 22:42

I've never had much confidence or self esteem

Well think of the great haircut as being a means of changing that. Make the appointment and GO!

percheron67 · 26/11/2019 22:44

My hairdressers is considered one of the most expensive in the area. I have had so many people compliment on the cut and the "way that it moves" that I wouldn't change.

Drpeppered · 26/11/2019 22:45

*Well every hairdresser (except this one) I have been to in the past has ended up swearing and getting frustrated with my hair.

It is very, very thick but fine. It's wavy but not curly, and has a mind of its own - stubbornly. It's quite frizzy and looks either too dry or too greasy.

Straighteners will only work for a short while before it rebounds where-ever it fancies going. It looks shit now because it grows fast but at different rates in the layers so it looks messy, prone to split ends too.
*

This sounds exactly like my hair! Please tell me the magic hairdresser.

theEnglishInPatient · 26/11/2019 22:47

the only question is : can you afford it.

I've just spent £180 on a haircut and colour, and it was totally worth it. I've never been happy with a cheap hairdresser, probably just unlucky but there's only so much money I can be bothered to waste trying to find the right one.

I'd rather spend more on my hair and be happy with it and wear Primark - cheap hair shows on me (and I consider a £200 bill mid-range, not luxury)

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 26/11/2019 22:48

The best hairdresser I’ve ever had was mega expensive. Colour, treatment and cut cost around £200 but it always looked amazing. I can’t afford that any more, or anything near it. Then I found another amazing stylist, but he went off travelling, so that was the end of that.

Now I pay £45, but don’t have a colour any more and leave longer between cuts. In the last five years I’ve tried eight different hairdressers. Still searching for the perfect less expensive stylist.

SpotlessMind · 26/11/2019 23:00

I switched to a relatively expensive hairdresser after years and years of disappointing haircuts elsewhere. I have similar hair to OP and I felt similarly awkward/guilty for the first couple of times (how much??!!) but then realised that (a) I’d rather spend extra money and come out of the salon happy and confident than pay less and wonder why I’d bothered, and (b) a good cut and colour stays looking good for longer. It’s also just a nicer experience in a good salon, and who couldn’t do with a bit of pampering now and again? If you can afford it then it’s a good investment in my opinion.

Grobagsforever · 26/11/2019 23:14

I pay that for a cut and colour every 8 weeksBlush

Enko · 26/11/2019 23:17

I do regularly. I just learned that unless I have a hairdresser who can get my hair I get poor haircuts. This means I pay £80-100 a haircut. I recently had to change hairdressers as mine moved and new place (came recommended ) charges about £100 less for Colour and cut but cut is still excellent so I am happy and feel like I got a bargain.

Heartburn888 · 26/11/2019 23:20

Do it! You said you had it done and it looked lovely for months so if you divide the cost of the cut by the owner of the salon by how many months it looked lovely for, I bet it would amount to hardly anything!

Treat yourself

pigsDOfly · 26/11/2019 23:21

I'd go for it if you can afford it OP.

I've gone for years with mediocre hair cuts and not been happy with them.

I'd be more than happy to pay a similar price to get a decent haircut but have no idea how to go about finding a good hairdresser.

So how do you find a really good hairdresser? Is it really just about how much you pay or can you pay a fortune and still end up thinking it looks rubbish.

Pumpkintopf · 26/11/2019 23:26

In the winter I wear a lot of hats...maybe I'll let the hats see me through winter and think about booking a cut somewhere next Spring!

Please don't do this! Book the haircut op!!!!!

poorstudent1010 · 27/11/2019 00:18

Why do people keep posting about how they spend this much on colour...what’s your point? Spending £80-£200 on colour services is the standard price, particularly if bleach/highlights are involved. Bleaching hair is a much more advanced service, takes significantly longer and has much more scope to go wrong. It’s completely different from paying £80 on a cut/blowdry alone, which would be considered a premium price ie a luxury cut.

I pay £220 for a full head of highlights with cut/blowdry every 4 months. Premium salon/senior stylists. Every 8 weeks I spend £95 on a root tint/toner, trim and blowdry for maintenance. I wouldn’t spend £80 on a cut alone.

MsChatterbox · 27/11/2019 07:45

I would do it and get it cut less regularly. I get my hair cut twice a year due to wanting an expensive cut on a low budget. It looks great year round is in good condition. I'm not saying to go to twice a year, but maybe go a month longer than normal to balance it out.

theEnglishInPatient · 27/11/2019 07:55

for the same reason you tell us how much YOU spend poorstudent1010

Some people spend more than others, £79 is not a top price for a hair cut.... What you call standard is luxury for others, and vice-versa.
