To spend THIS much on a haircut?!

Do you think £79 is too much to spend on one haircut?

I've lost count of the disappointing, bad cuts I've paid for; my hair is really tricky and many stylists just don't do a good job. So for years I asked my non hairdresser DH to cut it and patted myself on the back for saving money.

Anyway, I won a runner up prize in a local raffle last spring; a haircut at the very posh salon in town, and I had the most amazing haircut by the salon owner. My hair looked amazing for a couple of months as it grew, it still looked great.

It's looking shit again now, and I looked up the cost of seeing the same hairdresser - it's just shy of £80. Another member of staff at the same salon would be £45-50.

What would you do? I can afford it, but I find it very, very hard to spend money on myself without good reason.

I pay £140 for highlights and cut with a hairdresser who I’ve had for about twelve years. It’s such a good cut that I only have it done two, or maximum three, times a year so it balances out.

PavlovaTescobar · 26/11/2019 20:28

I pay exactly the same amount for my haircuts (wonder if we go to the same hairdresser). Used to be cheaper but my hairdresser was rightly promoted to a senior stylist as she does great cuts. £79 is a lot of money for me so I have started alternating hairdressers, every second cut is a cheapie dry cut at a small local which works out fine if the following haircut is a good one. I always go for a good cut if a special event is on the horizon.

Fuckenstein · 26/11/2019 20:28

Book it. You can afford it and you deserve to feel happy in your own skin, or hair as the case may be.

Fatted · 26/11/2019 20:30

Do it OP! A decent hair stylist is worth their weight in gold!

We were just talking about this today in work. I got mine done recently at an expensive salon but the girl did such an amazing job. Sometimes it's not just about the actual cut. It's being able to look at your hair type, your face shape and listening to what you want and working with you to get the best hair cut for you.

I also don't agree that every hairdresser has the same skills. The same basic training perhaps. Some of larger salon chains make sure their staff are up to date and continually training in new trends and techniques. Some stylists aren't quite so up to date with their training and techniques.

If you can afford to spend £79 on a haircut, go ahead. Better to support a local business which employs local people and pays taxes to find public services than spend it on imported stuff made in a sweatshop in China or Bangladesh which will end up in landfill.

Waveysnail · 26/11/2019 20:30

Why not try one of the cheaper stylists at the salon. I'd happily pay £45 for a really good cut (and.im up north)

Constantlurker · 26/11/2019 20:33

Book it. You'd spend £80 on a pair of jeans and a jumper or 2 but you wouldn't wear those every day, you wear your hair every day and if it gives you a boost to know that it looks nice then go for it. As fleabag says...hair is EVERYTHING!

AlexaAmbidextra · 26/11/2019 20:34

In the winter I wear a lot of hats...maybe I'll let the hats see me through winter and think about booking a cut somewhere next Spring!

Why? You still have to see yourself without a hat. Why would you not value yourself like this? If you pay £80 for a great cut every eight weeks it works out at £1.43 a day. For a great cut and feeling good about yourself that sounds like a bargain to me. Do it!

poorstudent1010 · 26/11/2019 20:35

Well the salon owner certainly sounds more professional than your previous stylists! I can see why you’re considering the £80 cut.

I know I’m adding on to your services here (sorry!) but your hair sounds really suitable for a keratin smoothing treatment. It won’t completely straighten out your hair but will leave it sleeker, smoother and shinier. It will take less time to dry (both air dry & with hairdryer) and it will stay straight/styled for longer. It will generally look healthier and won’t weigh your thick hair down.

JoyceDivision · 26/11/2019 20:37

If it is within your budget, go for it. You have your hair on everyday so a good cut sets up up for every day. You can change a rubbish top and wipe off crap makeup bit your hair is your hair.

I pay £45 oop north and whenever I have tried to go cheaper I have regretted it.

Embrace your inner pineapple and always wear your crown, as my DC would say Grin

Thank you all for the encouraging comments! I really struggle to see value in spending money on myself so it's very much a mental struggle. I've never had much confidence or self esteem.

I know I’m adding on to your services here (sorry!) but your hair sounds really suitable for a keratin smoothing treatment. Oooh I just Googled some before and afters, that treatment looks amazing, thank you for the advice that's really appreciated.

Life's for living. Go and treat yourself and feel fab.

Woman I am IMPLORING you to book back in! Before next spring!!

Seriously if you can afford it and it makes you feel good then what is the problem? You deserve to feel good about yourself.

Chunkers · 26/11/2019 20:56

I think you are worth it. I am struggling to consider a cut for £40 at the moment, but that’s because i haven't been to this stylist before. At my previous location it was £45 for colour plus selected highlights and a cut.

Could you see if there is a training day at this salon? Oftentimes, this can be a great saving, supervised by a top stylist.

JJSS123 · 26/11/2019 20:59

Please treat yourself. ❤️

MaeveDidIt · 26/11/2019 21:02

Yes have it done.
Your hair sounds like it would really benefit for a NanoKeratain treatment as well - they are Excellent, but that would add another £100+
I would HIGHLY recommend it if you can afford it.

Frenchw1fe · 26/11/2019 21:03

I went years with weak nails that split, broke and bent. In May I found a really good nail tech who understands how to care for my nails. It costs me £33 every 4 weeks but my nails always look beautiful now.
If you can afford to have your hair done then go for it.

Velveteenfruitbowl · 26/11/2019 21:04

I’ve never found a hair dresser where I live who does a good job so I just pay £15 for an ok cut. Before I moved I used to pay more for the perfect cut. 100% worth it. The way I saw it was I could have an amazing hair cut that made me look great or one more dress.

SerenDippitty · 26/11/2019 21:05

Mine costs £120 for a cut and colour. He's absolutely worth it and best cutter I've ever had. Day to day maintenance is virtually zero. I wash it once a week!

amusedbush · 26/11/2019 21:06

I’ve finally found a wonderful hairdresser and he charges £70 for a cut and style. It’s worth every penny to me after years of disappointing haircuts.

I paid £140 for my first balayage and cut, £70 for cuts in between and twice a year he does a ‘mini balayage’ which is a handful of foils to brighten it up. He is also not a chatter, which I appreciate Grin

amusedbush · 26/11/2019 21:08

I should say, I’m in Glasgow so £70 for a cut is quite steep!

AdoptedBumpkin · 26/11/2019 21:10

In the winter I wear a lot of hats...maybe I'll let the hats see me through winter and think about booking a cut somewhere next Spring!

I had a friend years ago who frequently had frizzy hair and she ended up wearing a lot of hats and made it her style.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 26/11/2019 21:10

Your stylist will probably be booked up for December if they're that good, so why not see if they do vouchers and get some for your Christmas?

Note - I am only suggesting this to break you in gently to spending money on your hair. It is the BEST investment you can make. I don't spend much on clothes but I always have a great haircut.

MadisonAvenue · 26/11/2019 21:13

Don't wait until Spring, book now if you can afford it!

MaeveDidIt · 26/11/2019 21:15

OP no disrespect to you and you might be the exception to the rule, but hair (inmo) always looks awful when people cut it themselves or as in your case get their DH to cut it.
Personally I think it's a great shame and false eonomy.
A decent hair cut really does make all the difference.
