Sister-in-law is getting a french bulldog puppy and am feeling very judgemental about it!

From all I’ve read, this breed is riddled with health problems. And the mothers can’t give birth, they have to have c-sections.

I think my sister-in-law is being superficial to get such a breed. I think she likes them because celebrities have them.

I’m being a judgey cow, aren’t I? But who would get such a breed? It must be a vanity thing, right?

Yanbu.

I looked after a Frenchie over the summer and it was heart wrenching seeing how it struggled........and this was a well bred dog (( as in its nostrils aren't on the verge of collapse )) so God knows how the less fortunate dogs cope. It is however riddled with allergy and gut problems..........I massively judge the selfish arseholes who encourage the breeding of flat faced dogs. There's absolutely no need for it........mthe breed should be allowed to die out or introduce other breeds to give healthier dogs.

Rescues all the way here.
I admit when friends get dogs from breeders I bite my tongue. With so many dogs in need, including puppies available at rescues/shelters there is no reason imho to go to a breeder unless you need a service animal.

stopgap · 26/11/2019 02:15

I have a French bulldog. I got her three weeks ago from a rescue. She was bred three times in a small scale puppy mill operation and basically dumped. She is a total love, however, and is surprisingly fit and healthy.

I also have a pug who’s nearly 16, and has never been to the vet for anything but vaccines. I got him when he was five, also from a rescue group.

So there are exceptions to the rule, but I agree with you, most of them are riddled with health concerns.

I also have a terrier mix mutt. Mutts are the best!

FreeBedForFlys · 26/11/2019 02:19

I’d totally support several breeds being allowed to die out. Frenchies... pugs... let’s face it if you want a dog that can’t breathe just because it’s cute you’re a bit of a twat.

sobeyondthehills · 26/11/2019 02:26

Adopt dont shop

I fucking hate that, when we wanted a dog, I went through so many rescues it was stupid (including local)

Someone was at home all day, we had a garden big fences and a park across the way but we also had a young child so they couldn't. My dog has done more for my mental health than anything in this world

stopgap · 26/11/2019 02:44

I must admit, it seems like an insurmountable task to adopt a dog in the UK.

I’m in the US, and I don’t understand why anyone would buy a dog. A quick look on Petfinder or at the local pound and you’ll discover masses of purebred dogs, those newfangled hybrids, as well as many mutts and Pits. There’s really something for everyone, and I adopted both my French bulldog and my terrier mix when my kids were small.

Youtoldme · 26/11/2019 02:57

Another Frenchie owner here, brilliant little dog, before we had her we had a boxer boy who was amazing and was 13 when we had to say goodbye to him.

ashtrayheart · 26/11/2019 03:05

My sister has a frenchie and I did roll my eyes, but she treats him like a prince; he has also had an op to make it easier to breathe which is good for him but ridiculous that it needed to be done.

SusanneLinder · 26/11/2019 03:06

I have a rescue pug x ( beagle). Wasn't such a fan of pugs due to flat faces, but looking back at photos of original pugs, they look more like mine. He has a short snout but his face is not flat so he doesn't have the breathing problems . He's a great friendly little dog. It is possible to stop this stupid breeding. They are doing it with GSD's after that kick up at Crufts.

HarrietTheFly · 26/11/2019 03:17

Sil and bil used to have a french bulldog, he was put to sleep last year. He was a really lovely natured dog but always seemed to be struggling to breathe. I always felt sad whenever I saw him. He had so many other health issues on top of that. I didn't realise they were considered a fashionable breed to own but sil and bil are very superficial. I didn't know that about the c-sections either.

JoannaObrien · 26/11/2019 04:37

My next door neighbour has just had one, it is a puppy and keeps yapping all the time and I think it must be destroying her house because she keep calling it naughty all the time.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 26/11/2019 04:43

I know someone who has just bought a French bulldog cross pomerainian . Bloody idiot

Durgasarrow · 26/11/2019 05:17

They are a sad breed.

braw · 26/11/2019 05:24

I saw one yesterday which couldn't walk properly, the muscles around its legs meant it couldn't bend them. Poor thing.

megletthesecond · 26/11/2019 05:27

Yanbu.
It drives me nuts watching, and listening to, the poor brachycephalic things being walked. What's wrong with choosing a dog that can at least breathe?

prawnsword · 26/11/2019 05:56

Dogs are not accessories. Too many people treat them like they are. Honestly didn’t want to even click on this thread because reading people say how it’s your choice to get a puppy, you don’t know what you’re getting at the pound etc will just make me rage inside then cry on the outside. Anyone who really, truly loves dogs would surely be aware that so many need homes & just dying for someone to love them furever.

I won’t even acknowledge anyone’s designer breed dog now. It’s really hard as it’s not the dog’s fault! But I don’t want to contribute to the attention overload they receive with their Frenchy, et al

I do think less of people that buy dogs as accessories & knowing they have massive health problems. My two terrier mutts have not had a single health issue raided needing a tooth out. People say they are cute all the time but didn’t get them to have the right looking animal. They are cute because they look unique.

If people discussed children like having breeds of dogs...no we don’t want a mixed race child, because you never know what you’ll get & I don’t want to deal with my mixed race child’s potential problems.

Then they go & have actual children, which you have zero idea what they will be like, or if they might be non-neurotypical or have a genetic issue.

I don’t understand the reasoning of buying a specific breed & never will. Dogs are like people. You wouldn’t pick your friends based on their race.

prawnsword · 26/11/2019 06:02

I am not trying to compare children to dogs - just that why insist on being so picky about the particular breed/temperament/look & then have biological children when you can’t pick any of those aspects of your kids ?

If people kept having children knowing full well they were inheriting serious life limiting genetic problems there would be more people who would be against the concept of doing that.

I’m making a correlation with the thought process behind it - so don’t come at me saying I called little Johnny a dog & that having kids is nothing like dogs etc

stucknoue · 26/11/2019 06:07

My neighbour has 2, the female is a crazy, grumpy creature - barks at my dog for ages until he leaps over and barks back (6ft fence) she then runs inside ... repeat every time I let out, drives me mad, even in winter they let the dogs go in and out through a large cat flap

DonkeyHotty · 26/11/2019 06:10

YANBU op. Judge away; I would too.

MarthasGinYard · 26/11/2019 06:14

Agree Op

YANBU

People like that make me shudder

crispysausagerolls · 26/11/2019 06:21

Let’s not forget about King Charles Spaniels who are bred for their eyes to bulge out/brain too small for skull.

SteeperThanHell · 26/11/2019 06:28

We have a friend who is a vet and was asked by a client what advice they would give to someone buying a French Bulldog - he said “don’t buy one”, they persisted with “no really we are getting one, what advice do you give” he said “get the most comprehensive, most expensive insurance you can afford!”.

PlumsGalore · 26/11/2019 06:39

I don’t believe keeping “any” pet is selfish. A poor goldfish in a bowl or bird or rabbit in a cage is hideous.

But I fail to see how my cats, fed twice a day, with a mum who works from home, who sleep on warm cosy beds with lots of attention and a safe garden, surrounded by other gardens and fields to play and hunt in, access to healthcare and medication is selfish. If they had such shit lives my cats wouldn’t live to their late teens and early twenties.

They would be like those flea ridden strays abroad having endless litters, scavenging and with weepy eyes who die when they are about two.

Enlighten me.

Gardai · 26/11/2019 06:41

YANBU I’d judge like fuck too. I had reason to research the pug ‘business’ a couple of years ago and whilst some breeders do not inbreed the whole system is fucked with human vanity and money. The animals suffer and it’s just not worth it, a real animal lover wouldn’t get involved.
I really am adamant that charging for dogs should be banned whilst we have so many unloved pets in cages in rescues and being put down in pounds.

frumpety · 26/11/2019 06:43

I have met two , one an ex breeding bitch rescue and the other a young dog bought as a puppy , they are both lovely little dogs and both can now breath easier due to corrective surgery . Is your SIL aware of how much this surgery costs ? From memory I think it is around the £1000 mark. Unfortunately I imagine there will be a lot of people who will not pay for this surgery, who happily kid themselves that their dogs restricted breathing is fine.
