Sister-in-law is getting a french bulldog puppy and am feeling very judgemental about it!

From all I’ve read, this breed is riddled with health problems. And the mothers can’t give birth, they have to have c-sections.

I think my sister-in-law is being superficial to get such a breed. I think she likes them because celebrities have them.

I’m being a judgey cow, aren’t I? But who would get such a breed? It must be a vanity thing, right?

Have never known such vitriol against dogs as on this thread

The only vitriol has been towards owners and breeders of dogs like this. The poor dogs can't help how they've been bred - so why would aiming vitriol at them help?

Bulldogs have some of the best temperaments I've ever seen in smaller dogs but I still wouldn't get one because of their health issues. Same as I wouldn't get a cockerpoo/labradoodle because of the likelihood of them coming from a puppy farm, or a Doberman because of the heart issues.

Health and temperament were the most important things to me when I looked for a dog, but I would never get an unhealthy breed just because they had a good temperament.

As long as dogs are being put to sleep (and they are), breeding is adding to the problem.
Why do these breeds cost so much in the first place? Just to get the tag 'designer breed'? People save up a fortune for them and then can't pay their vet bills. Why breed from these dogs in the first place when it is known there is a high risk of suffering ? Some people even think there's nothing wrong with their dog when there clearly is. It's heartbreaking when they come into the vets - people who struggle with a common cold bring them in and can't understand that their dog is suffering by having difficulty breathing! People are as seriously shallow as the breed's breathing!
As for rescue dogs, most shelters will have some dogs which have been surrendered by families with children - in these cases, they may consider rehoming to new homes which have children.
