Sister-in-law is getting a french bulldog puppy and am feeling very judgemental about it!

From all I’ve read, this breed is riddled with health problems. And the mothers can’t give birth, they have to have c-sections.

I think my sister-in-law is being superficial to get such a breed. I think she likes them because celebrities have them.

I’m being a judgey cow, aren’t I? But who would get such a breed? It must be a vanity thing, right?

How much do you know about profits of dog breeders @PBo83?

If they weren’t breeding them, extinction is fine with you? Nice to know, that’s an unusual position

treepolitics · 26/11/2019 09:42

@grimbles speaking from personal experience is anecdotal as are all mumsnet threads, not a strawman. That’s what the other posters are doing assuming the op’s SIL has managed to find an unscrupulous breeder.

Grimbles · 26/11/2019 09:45

No, your strawmen were all the guff about women who've had caesareans and pandas Hmm

ButIGetUpAgain · 26/11/2019 09:46

I have one. She was a rescue though and was being used as a puppy machine. She had already had a c section and had her first litter very young. She had no love in her old home and you could tell she had been abused. She would cower and be overly submissive when we first had her. She's now a confident, cuddly, happy little goblin and I absolutely love her to bits. I'm so glad we rescued her.

However, I would not have chosen the breed, because of the health problems. Luckily, our frenchie doesn't have any, but she does snuffle a lot and it's upsetting. The vet said her nostrils are bigger than most frenchies are her breathing is good, but I still feel bad for her.

I don't know what the answer is though. What do you do with the existing puppies?

treepolitics · 26/11/2019 09:52

Those are legitimate examples - we’ll have to agree to disagree. The op has made a huge leap assuming SIL has gone to an unscrupulous breeder, she has only her general prejudice against french bull dog breeders as a group and inherited breed problems.

We wouldn’t be talking another letting people go extinct for c sections, infertility problems, inherited problems and I fail to see why we should accept that it’s immoral to buy a french bulldog from a reputable breeder for the same reasons.

Of course you are free not to buy a french bulldog for any reasons you see fit but thankfully I’m still free to see it differently.

mencken · 26/11/2019 09:52

just to check that she will:

  • never leave it alone for too long
  • walk it daily or even twice daily
  • if there are ANY reports of barking, engage a dog sitter or take it to daycare regardless of cost.
  • give it all its jabs. Take it to the vet when needed regardless of cost
  • pick up and bin all its crap

and is prepared to do all this for a decade or so.

shearwater · 26/11/2019 09:53

I'm surprised so many posters have rescue dogs. Any advice I've read has said you shouldn't have a rescue dog if you have a child. Unless all the posters commenting are child-free but it's not a working solution for a family with a child

Any child, of any age, with any rescue dog? Do you know that for definite, or are you just talking out of your arse?

treepolitics · 26/11/2019 09:55

You pretty much have to be careful of any dog whatsoever with small children.

BubblesBuddy · 26/11/2019 09:56

The Chinese have panda breeding centres and sell the pandas to zoos. Every animal has a price if a human being wants it.

Very many dog breeds are perfectly ok. People should just judge which breed is for them and always but from a breeder registered with the breed association. The one for our breed of dog also put potential owners in touch with dogs needing rehoming. We did a lot of research before we bought a dog. We chose a breeder who had bred for years and he wasn’t a fashionable breed. That’s the key really. Get a dog that’s straightforward and not the icon of the moment.

I do know people who have had pugs all their lives. They won’t have any other breed. It used to be a dog you saw occasionally. It’s such a shame when a dog is overbred to make profits. People should be a lot more discerning about the dogs they buy.

RightYesButNo · 26/11/2019 09:56

I remembered reading a certain thread and went to find it when I saw this AIBU. It’s a post from a vet about how flat-faced breeds seem hesitant to give up their breathing tubes after surgery. Absolutely heartbreaking and should be shared with anyone who wants a “Frenchie,” pug, English bulldog, Shih Tzu, or any other brachycephalic dog. Any breeder or owner who says their dogs are healthy should face what the reality of a “healthy” brachycephalic dog means.

Yes. I agree. Small children and dogs shouldn’t be mixed. At least wait until children can take the dog for a walk.

Grimbles · 26/11/2019 09:58

Yes. And you would think that all these genuine, careful, not for profit breeders who truly love their dogs would be just as aghast at their breed becoming a fashion statement too. Yet it gets defended 🤷‍♀️

MarthasGinYard · 26/11/2019 10:02

Seems there's much 'breeding' of these poor things on this thread alone.

EleanorShellstrop100 · 26/11/2019 10:02

My friend has two and my next door neighbor has one. Lovely dogs, no health problems so far, great pets for families. Yes rescues are best but I think you’re still being pretty unnecessarily judgemental.

Madhouse2010 · 26/11/2019 10:08

It does make me very angry I did not get my Frenchies for breeding it was a accident she caught lesson learned my boy Frenchie is booked in to be sorted out so no more I wouldn't put her through it again and as I selling the pups I have been advised by vets to make sure new owners are aware of the problems that Frenchies can have it does make me so angry to think people buy the dogs just for a fashion icon I got mine as my children choose them they was bought for my kids and they have not stopped loving them in the 3 years we have had them they can walk them which they wouldn't a big dog and they love cuddles on sofa with them as soon as they come home home from school my kids don't leave the dogs and the pups alone which to be fair my mother yo pups has not once snapped or ever gone for my kids which people said she could turn nasty when pups was born but they was all there next to her while having pups and she hant got nasty bone in her body

bethandpooch · 26/11/2019 10:11

They're creating more dogs when there are too many already, that's why I have a problem with breeders. I can understand breeding for police dogs,. Guide dogs and service dogs in general. But there are far too many dogs in shelters and not to mention the ones being put down because rescue centers don't have the room to house them. When you think about it logically its ridiculous.

DogAndCatPerson · 26/11/2019 10:16

You have male and female unneutered dogs living in the same house and them breeding was an ‘accident’? Hmm. Why didn’t you get the injection when you realised the unwanted mating had taken place, to prevent the litter?

Grimbles · 26/11/2019 10:19

DogandCatperson got there before me...

You didnt get them to breed but neither had been neutered after 3 yrs and then an accidental mating. Sure...

PBo83 · 26/11/2019 10:23

DogandCatperson got there before me...

...and you're now selling the pups...seems like an honest (profitable) mistake!

Grimbles · 26/11/2019 10:26

Why arent you keeping your kids away from the mum and pups? Just because shes not snapping at them doesn't mean she wont, or that shes not feeling stressed about it.

DogAndCatPerson · 26/11/2019 10:26

Honestly, it sounds like a total clusterfuck

SpamChaudFroid · 26/11/2019 10:27

The frenchies I see when walking my dog never look happy. One in particular sticks in my mind, he (intact male) was being dragged along by his owner who had her children with her. He kept trying to sit down in the road and I could hear his laboured breathing from across the road. The entire family was paying him no attention and seemed not to notice/care that he was struggling. Should have I had said something? Probably. Sad

I struggle to understand why people want animals that have been bred for their anomalies if said anomalies make life harder for them.

The cats that look like owls (scottish fold/american curl suffer from pain their entire life because the same gene responsible for the ear deformity means there are abnormalities in the cartilage that will give it a lifetime of pain. People still buy them, knowing this.

I have 2 rescues (1 cat, 1 dog) and a pedigree cat. After seeing the conditions he was bred in I wouldn't buy another animal from a breeder.

Grimbles · 26/11/2019 10:28

All the true and honest breeders seem strangely quiet all of a sudden...

kellie90711 · 26/11/2019 10:37

I have a French bulldog she's not for breeding she's amazing with all my kids Inc 1 year old and never been poorly she is amazing I wouldnt be without her now. I think dogs are good for families they encourage walks and stuff spending time out instead of in the house

FoamingAtTheUterus · 26/11/2019 10:49

Kellie she's amazing but her very existence means she suffers.

From the gastric problems due to their stumpy gut (( the reason Frenchie s fart so much )) to her breathing problems meaning she struggles even more in hot weather than other dogs. Oh and her poor eyes which will be more sensitive to cold and heat , this is just her day to day normality...........what sane human would think that's ok when the only trade off for the dog is 'looking cute' ? . Hmm

God, get a Jack Russell or Scottie dog if you want a small dog that will get your kids out of the house. Or even better a mongrel. Which will be far healthier.
