AIBU?

To ask what you think is worth spending a bit extra on?

And what you think isn’t?
Can be anything - food, clothes, holidays etc etc?

For example, I’ve just bought some socks that are a cashmere blend and wonder how I could now ever go back to boring old cotton.
Likewise, I usually spend a bit more on coffee for good quality. But some food items such as tinned pulses - I don’t think it matters buying cheap.

What items do you spend a little more on because you think they’re worth it? And which do you buy the cheapest of because you can’t notice any difference?

Thanks for taking part in a mundane thread Smile

Oh and the wine I buy is always less that £5 a bottle and 95% of my clothes are from charity shops.

I'm guessing good rice would be stick to Jasmin or basmati. Boil in bag, ready made or good god microwaveable rice 🤮

ragwort thanks for clarifying. I honestly can't say I've ever seen a difference with rice. I buy the biggest/cheapest bags I can, often from the Asian section in supermarkets or if I'm buying the microwave packs for convenience, I get those from Aldi. Same with cheap lentils and tinned pulses.

Yes - not an 'everyday' thing, but this too!
Just fairly recently, in fact. 👍

I have very small list of won't compromise on cheaper items.
Coffee, (instant and beans) only Gold blend and Lavazza.
Toilet Roll, never buy cheapest but happy to get own brand.
Electronics (phones, tablets, TV) always Samsung.
Gravy granules- bistro best. I also get bistro curry sauce that is lovely.
That's it, I will happily downgrade everything else. I will buy branded stuff if it's cheap or on offer.

Boots, I've got some £13 from Aldi that are so comfy and I've some lovely coats and jackets from Primark. Food, well it alls ends up down the toilet so it seems ridiculous to overspend on it. I try to buy the best quality for the cheapest ££. It's easier to do this in Aldi and Lidl.

Jasmine and basmati are just different types of rice to go with certain food though. You can buy cheaper own brand basmati or Jasmine rather than say Tilda

I also buy chopped frozen garlic and ginger. Much cheaper than buying it fresh.

There is good Basmati and bad basmati. Some cooks faster and is soft and soggy, doesn’t go ‘bouncy ‘ like Tilda.

Tilda isn’t the only good basmati, but we use it all the time because it is consistently good and we know exactly how long to cook it for.

Can anyone suggest where to buy good candles and bed linen ?

Back to the question:
Toilet rolls
Paint for walls
Olive oil if you are going to taste it.
Shoes
Prefer sea salt to table so will pay more for it as it tastes so much nicer.

Make up and skin care products. I started buying better quality before I got married and haven't gone back to cheaper ones. I just wear makeup less and don't buy as much now. I have really bad skin and find it easier to control with better quality products.

Fruit, veg and animal products (food). Would prefer to buy good quality and make savings on other food products.

Toilet paper. I find with the cheap stuff you use twice as much.
Dry roast peanuts have to be KP.
Bleach has to be Domestos, cheaper bleach is rubbish and doesn't shift stains.
Clothes. I expect them to last years.
Shoes. Once again decent ones last years.

Erm clothes etc can be from anywhere like matalan George etc but I will save an get an expensive coat for the kids an expensive shoes as they tend to last a lot longer. But food I do love a lot of the own cheap brands .... since being a kid iv always preferred the cheap to the regular brands. Don't know why and DP calls me for it as the food shop he gets the regular noodles for example. Il get my 20p ones lol can't beat them!!!!!!

Fairy liquid - platinum is my favourite.

Coffee - only DH drinks it so it lasts ages

Teabags - also last ages as it's only me and guests who drink it

Cornflakes - cheap ones just don't taste the same

Waffles - has to be birds eye

Holidays. Wasted my time and money on far too many awful "cheap and cheerful" holidays, now always go for better quality accommodation supported by excellent trip advisor reviews on the accommodation itself and the area/attractions, etc. Life's too short to waste a holiday on some flea pit hotel in the arse end of nowhere. We spend dozens of hours on research to get the we can at a price we're willing to run to.
