How is beans on toast a treat?

kit05 · 22/11/2019 14:09

Saw someone on here the other day said they were having beans on toast as a "treat".

Why is this a treat? Is it due to salt and sugar in them ?

This was staple of my student diet, not sure I see it as a treat , more so that times are hard.

Any other treats ?

Beans on Toast is a treat in my house ....I hate beans....so if hubby has it then he says it's treat ....usually if he's home late from work or I'm not home !!!

Elbeagle · 23/11/2019 08:34

I have eaten real butter for years and years. My DC (6 and 4) hate margerine/spread and can tell when it has been used in a sandwich.
I would much rather have butter in the house than spread.

Thurmanmurman · 23/11/2019 08:38

I love beans on toast but rarely eat it. I had it the other day and the farting was spectacular! I spent all day apologising to my family. Never again.

CherryPavlova · 23/11/2019 08:43

An absolute treat. I’ve been the only baked bean eater all the while the family were growing up. Vegetarian daughter eats them now but my husband’s prejudice put them off when they were growing up.

Nobody else home, a cold evening, a long day at work then Heinz beans on thick, well-buttered toast in front of the television is heaven sent. Easy, quick, filling, delicious gloopy, comfort food at its very best.

billy1966 · 23/11/2019 08:49

I love the simplicity of it. Only have it occasionally. It is the type of thing I might go for if I had been eating out continuously and wanted something plain.

Only butter here. Have never bought a substitute.

Oh and I would not so humbly say I am a fairly exceptional cook and baker.

I just love beans on toast as a comfort snack.
I certainly wouldn't think of it as a junk food.

Crystal87 · 23/11/2019 09:00

Maybe it's something to do with the " cheap white bread" which everyone seems to eat on here to be competitively working class.

CherryPavlova · 23/11/2019 09:41

No, not on white sliced. A couple of doorsteps from a fresh sandwich tin loaf preferably.

redandwhite1 · 23/11/2019 09:54

So everyone knows after reading this I had it for my breakfast Smile

@kateandme, my Nigerian friends cook in big batches and freeze, then microwave. They link food with good health so haven't embraced processed food. A lot of their parents were lucky survivors of the Biafra Crisis.

One recently had tonsillitis and she had a chicken stew and a multi bean stew, while she recovered.

My Father from SA would just boil up pigs trotters and eat them with bread. Or do a massive pan of peawack (pea soup).

Ohyesiam · 23/11/2019 10:33

I assume the poster who put it was a treat in the original what’s for dinner thread meant it’s a treat not to cook, but end up with something hot that she enjoys.

billy1966 · 23/11/2019 13:58

I think a treat is anything you really enjoy.
I would have no problem calling beans on toast a treat, 'cos I really enjoy it.😛

billy1966 · 23/11/2019 13:59

Similarly, a large baked fluffy potato, filled with homemade garlic butter, topped with beans and grated cheese.

Absolute heaven.
Another treat!

kateandme · 23/11/2019 14:06

Ponoka7 wow.we are all so different.yet warm chicken soup or stew is a comfort thing all over it seems.
Pig trotters...not made it here yet.apart from in five star restaurants weirdly.

"I sometimes buy processed foods and eat them out of curiosity..."

Absolutely roaring with laughter at this ponce-tastic pathetic attempt at a stealth boast. Of course you do, dear, of course you do GrinGrinGrin

Toomuchtrouble4me · 23/11/2019 17:36

Funnily enough I had it last night - it was such a treat - yes it is a dummy but the treat was not having to cook.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 23/11/2019 17:37

"I sometimes buy processed foods and eat them out of curiosity

Whaddapratt!!!

busyhonestchildcarer · 23/11/2019 17:38

To me I dont consider it a treat rather a cheat days food as I am a low carnet. However lets not diss anyones ideas of treats or whatever. Our incomes are probably all varied so our treats will be too.Not forgetting that to many this is part of their staple diet due to being on low incomes and in that instance it isnt a bad diet to be on.By the way talking of low incomes please consider really carefully who you vote for.

chubbylover78 · 23/11/2019 17:53

I have health issues which means baked beans are a big no no for me and I haven't eaten them in years, whenever I had them in the past I always looked at it as a treat.

nuxe1984 · 23/11/2019 17:54

It is a treat … I like 2 x cheese on toast, one with poached egg and one with beans.

Normally I eat a sensible meal with chicken/fish and salad/vegetables. But if I've had a busy week and want to indulge … then it's treat food … with a glass of wine of course :)

Hairsprayqueeen · 23/11/2019 17:55

it would be a treat for me as it's rare I allow myself refined carbs or straight up old fashioned comfort food like that.

Frokni · 23/11/2019 18:09

Lol @ treat. In our house that's the usual Saturday night dinner for the kids! Ages 2 and 4. Saturday night is our big fancy meal or takeaway for me and H.

Baxterbear · 23/11/2019 18:17

No way is beans on toast a treat but if you were having poached eggs on toast, now THAT is a treat!!

Confuddledtown · 23/11/2019 18:20

Maybe not so much a treat as a comfort food?

CravingCheese · 23/11/2019 18:23

Comfort food is a treat imo...

manicmij · 23/11/2019 18:25

A lot of children consider it a treat as no green stuff, can be eaten with a spoon and is sweet.. For adults no cooking and remnants of childhood..
