How is beans on toast a treat?

kit05 · 22/11/2019 14:09

Saw someone on here the other day said they were having beans on toast as a "treat".

Why is this a treat? Is it due to salt and sugar in them ?

This was staple of my student diet, not sure I see it as a treat , more so that times are hard.

Any other treats ?

I bloody love beans on toast. It's the ultimate comfort food. It does, however, have to be slathered in cheese!

We have it every so often. With fruit and yoghurt afterwards, it's a balanced meal. My toddler loves it. Oh and because this is MN, we have a bread maker so that's fresh, good quality cheese, and organic natural yoghurt Grin

Also can't forget Heinz tomato soup with cheese toastie when it's winter and I'm full of cold. Love it

kateandme · 22/11/2019 20:59

so if we have arrived at beans on toast being a treat because that means simple comfort food.what do the mn from around the world see as the perfect comfort food.anyone got anything different.what is your beans on toast equivalent?

Toddlerteaplease · 22/11/2019 21:06

My mum always has beans on toast in their favourite tea room. I love beans on toast but not when I eat out! I want something I wouldn't cook at home.

Ragwort · 22/11/2019 21:07

A ‘lazy meal’ ........

only on Mumsnet Hmm

More than half the world don’t have enough to eat and we are describing a perfectly good meal of beans on toast as a ‘lazy meal’.

kateandme · 22/11/2019 21:13

if someone came to me right now and put a plate of beans on toas ttheyd made for me.i think i might cry with thanks.

theEnglishInPatient · 22/11/2019 21:20

More than half the world don’t have enough to eat and we are describing a perfectly good meal of beans on toast as a ‘lazy meal’.

so what? It's exactly what it means. No preparation, no effort. What else would you call that?

Only on MN do we always need one to pop up and remind us of "children starving in the world"

Bluntness100 · 22/11/2019 21:37

I know, it's beyond ludicrous. A lazy meal is exactly what it says, one which doesn't take much effort. To try to say it's not and we can't say that because kids are starving in thr world is just unbelievable.

billy1966 · 22/11/2019 21:40

Absolutely love beans on hot, heavily buttered toast topped with cheese and black pepper.

A feast at any time for me👍

Bluerussian · 23/11/2019 03:49

That sounds lovely, billy.

Sweetpea55 · 23/11/2019 03:58

I like beans on toast anyway but it becomes more delicious when I have been on a cruise and had delicious meals made available to me. Beans on toast is available in the morning but to me it's a tea time dish
I crave this food normality upon my return and gave it with an egg ontop

Faithsangel · 23/11/2019 04:18

some people cant cook
some dont have money
i usually eat out 4-5 times a week some think this is a treat

maddiemookins16mum · 23/11/2019 04:30

Only on MN does someone buy processed food and eat it out of curiosity 😏

Rubyupbeat · 23/11/2019 04:37

Tinned Tom's and beans are the only canned goods I buy.
I love beans on toast, for me it's a comfort food.

BillHadersNewWife · 23/11/2019 05:31

Maddie that was me. I realise it sounds like I'm an arsehole....I'm honestly not....I grew up on processed and fresh food mixed. But I'm almost 50 now and for the past 20 years I've eaten very organically and only fresh food.

Sometimes I want to remember what things tasted like...so I'll buy something I used to eat and have a trip down memory lane.

Things like hot dogs, beans, once I bought canned meatballs.

Otherwise, due to where I live, I have access to some very high quality produce so naturally I eat that.

I live in South Australia...there's literally food everywhere. Lemons and figs, loquats, apples and cherries all grow in abundance and are mostly free.

People leave them outside in boxes for anyone to share....grapes...tonnes of them on the vine...local growers sell veg and soft fruits from their gardens and our butcher is affordable and organic. I have chickens for eggs. DH fishes regularly.

I'm not showing off...like "ooh look at me with my free figs!"

.it was an accident I ended up living here...but I'm just illustrating why I don't really buy processed food much. When I do it IS out of curiosity...I want to remember what it tasted like.

maddiemookins16mum · 23/11/2019 05:44

@BillHadersNewWife

It sound amazing. Always wanted to visit South Africa 😊

shearwater · 23/11/2019 05:46

It's definitely not a treat. Only on MN would you hear that someone waa having a real treat tonight - beans on toast. Anyone irl would only say that sarcastically.

BillHadersNewWife · 23/11/2019 06:07

Maddie South Australia...:D not Africa.

Thismummyruns · 23/11/2019 06:12

My LO would probably consider that as a treat, she also thinks I'm the best mum ever because I made her a fish finger sandwich 2 nights ago for the first time at home 😆

The only reason I could think of beans on being a treat personally is that I limit my bread intake and avoid it most days.

NationMcKinley · 23/11/2019 06:21

Beans on (proper) buttered toast with cheese and a load of chilli flakes is brilliant. I’m really hungry now!!

redandwhite1 · 23/11/2019 06:40

Maybe they're having Heinz instead of Aldi's own?! Grin

Tminus3days · 23/11/2019 06:49

Ooh I love beans and toast. Or bean toastie. We don't tend to buy bread much so it would be a treat for me.

Loopytiles · 23/11/2019 06:53

High sugar/glucose, esp if made with white bread.

Loopytiles · 23/11/2019 06:54

I know lots of women with strict diet regimes who would consider it contraband!

Countryescape · 23/11/2019 07:57

So every odd responses on here.
Beans on toast with some Veges is a nutritious meal. And for the person who said you can justify using real butter in it??? Why don’t you use real butter all the time? It’s far better for you than that processed margarine crap. Some very odd ideas about diet and nutrition in here

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/11/2019 08:06

Dead right about the butter Countryescape.

Foe flavour and health it is so much better than any spread. I'd rather have a scraping of butter than unlimited "spread".
