How is beans on toast a treat?

kit05 · 22/11/2019 14:09

Saw someone on here the other day said they were having beans on toast as a "treat".

Why is this a treat? Is it due to salt and sugar in them ?

This was staple of my student diet, not sure I see it as a treat , more so that times are hard.

Any other treats ?

As I try to eat healthy on the whole Heinz beans on lurpak buttered toast with a sprinkling of malt vinegar is a big treat to me. Made more so as I rarely have it.

angelfacecuti75 · 23/11/2019 18:28

Beans are actually really good for you...1 of your 5 a day , full of iron /protein...but they give me trapped wind so I tend to avoid them. Perhaps they have a diet full of fruit & veg so this is like more of a snack dinner.

You’re all complete bastards!
For the last 4 weeks I’ve been having my teeth taken out. I can only dream of delicious toast as my gums are so tender and it’s going to be another 2 weeks before I’m likely to get my falsies.
I’m living on scrambled eggs and mashed potato and I don’t want to face another bowl of soup for the foreseeable future.

How is beans on toast a treat?

Probably by the same measure that a poster last weekend was deemed greedy for having a roast dinner on the same day that she'd had a jacket potato at lunch.

I like baked beans, but not that keen on Heinz. I think Branston the best.

Northerner here, grew up in the poverty struck 70s and 80s with coal fires and miners strikes.... so beans on toast was a staple and also something my sister and I could cook when my mum was out or too knackered to cook... a treat to us was beans and sausages in a tin.... always Heinz though we never went to value as in those days value meant value in terms of taste.... nowadays I prefer Waitrose essential beans at 1.10 for a pack of 4 to Heinz.
I love it when my son wants scrambled egg and beans for tea as it's done in less than 5 mins.

We don’t tend to eat such things as standard anymore though do we.... tbf I last had it over a year ago and because it had been so long it did feel like a treat.... no real cooking to do ... little clean up, but a full belly(and probably wind the next day... but you can’t win them all😂😂)

Getitwright · 23/11/2019 18:44

We like beans on toast, one of our favourite lunches out in our motorhome. Known as gourmet beans........ poach sliced mushrooms, drain, throw in low sugar/Salt baked beans, add some tinned tomatoes, grate in some Parmesan if wanting extra taste, ladle over toast scraped with Marmite! Easy three of your five a day, super full of flavour. Then of course you walk it off!

Jezebel101 · 23/11/2019 18:45

Beans on toast are a treat insofar as they're quick and tasty and it's a break from cooking something 'proper' for dinner. Also, I love them and any excuse is good. Real comfort food for anyone who's meals growing up consisted of chops or chicken, spuds and one veg - every single day of the week.

They're not a treat in the same way a box of Ferrero Rocher and an Indian takeout is.

nethunsinthatway · 23/11/2019 18:58

For me they are a treat. Not for any ridiculous diet reason, but because dh doesn’t consider it a “dinner”. So it’s something I do when I’m on my own - double win - lovely tasty beans on toast and minimal effort.

Celestine70 · 23/11/2019 19:18

Its it just normal food? I can't eat it due to health reasons but my son loves it.

Endofthedays · 23/11/2019 19:19

How is having a baked potato not cooking?

You are literally buying a raw potato, cooking it in the oven and then eating it.

Does it not count because it wasn’t cooked in the embers of Mount Doom or something?

Emmak789 · 23/11/2019 19:39

It's the carbs, there is a tonne of them in beans and toast and both together is carb overload....I'd prefer a chocolate bar.

Wasabiprawns · 23/11/2019 20:21

I live in the US where a tin costs $3. The past few weeks, I have been trying to make them from scratch . Kids won't eat the ones I make but I will. Still trying to perfect the recipe...guessing that I'm not putting enough sugar in compared to the tins.

tiedy · 23/11/2019 20:55

Baked beans are revolting. I really can’t think of anything less treat-like.

busybarbara · 23/11/2019 21:19

The trendier term for something like this is “soul food” which might explain it better

ReggieLedoux · 23/11/2019 21:27

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

Your post is hilarious - thanks for making me laugh 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂☺️😂🤣😂🤣😂

Diva66 · 23/11/2019 21:30

Yes, it’s a treat, because I seldom get the opportunity to eat it! It’s comfort food to me.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 23/11/2019 21:34

Thanks, @ReggieLedoux!

4DrivetPrive · 23/11/2019 21:37

Tinned spaghetti on toast is where its at for me. Pure carb overload and nostalgia I save for when I've been poorly or really need comfort food. I can almost feel the lentil weavers imploding at the thought Grin but it is a rare treat for me.

FelicisNox · 23/11/2019 22:14

I love beans on toast with brown sauce. I don't have it often as I'm the only one who likes it so yeah, I suppose it is a bit of a treat. Not exactly Miller & Carter but still nice once in a while.

Catsinthecupboard · 24/11/2019 02:37

Not comforting at all and not the point, but green string beans are both bean and vegetable. (Outside is green veg, inside is a bean).

Missed the point.
Sorry. Carry on. Wine

You didn't specify the pasta, but this is priceless:

*a jacket potato isn’t cooking.” LOL.

I laugh (inside) at all you “cooking from scratch” fakers. You are not cooking from scratch unless you are using a pan you bashed into shape from molten steel with your own bare hands EVERY time you cook. Like what I do.

labazsisgoingmad · 24/11/2019 08:27

doing rescue animals they come first so we often have beans on toast or baked potatoes cheap and cheerful

Hemelbelle · 24/11/2019 10:09

Yummy; what a great idea for lunch with lashings of butter! It will bring back happy childhood memories. Also, when I was doing human biology I learnt that the combination (beans and wheat) contains all the essential amino acids; so healthy as well as a treat :)
