Or is my friend regarding evening meal times?

We’re in conflict about what time of day most people eat their evening meals.

She thinks that your last meal of the day should be around 6:30pm, with anything after 7 being far too late.

I think around 8pm is normal, and anything before 7 is far too early.

For context, neither of us have kids, and both start work at 9am.

Who IBU?

Me - YABU, anything after 7pm is too late
Her - YANBU, anything before 7pm is too early

We're in the middle of you both really, anywhere from 6.30-7.30

suchsweetsorrow82 · 21/11/2019 07:47

Again due to our circumstances we eat at 5.30pm during the week as we like to eat together. We have a 3 year old who goes to bed at 7pm. We also have a 10 year old who goes to bed at 9pm so she may have a small snack around 7.30pm. Neither of us feel hungry again before bed time. I may have a biscuit with tea at around 8pm.

Saturday evening if we’re not out we push everything back my an hour or so so normally eat around 7pm

Sunday’s we eat at around 4.30pm!

BrieAndChilli · 21/11/2019 07:55

We eat around 6pm. Used to eat later before kids but since having kids we all eat together around 6. It’s important that we all eat as a family.

francienolan · 21/11/2019 08:04

We usually eat between 7.30 and 8.30. We don't go to bed until 11.30 so theres a long time between the two. Although sometimes I have to work late (like last night I got home at 9.30) and I always eat at home after. Otherwise I get hungry before bedtime! No children here.

GOODCAT · 21/11/2019 08:05

We eat at 8.45pm as I don't get in from work until 8.10pm. We eat earlier on weekends.

Ohyesiam · 21/11/2019 08:06

Pre kids, 8,9,10 pm.
Little kids 5.30pm
Now with teens 6.30, 7pm
I think my digestion benefited from eating early though.

Nuttyaboutnutella · 21/11/2019 08:31

I eat with DC at 5.30pm. DP reheats his meal once kids are asleep around 7ish. I usually have some cheese and crackers or dark chocolate around 9ish.

Nuttyaboutnutella · 21/11/2019 08:32

Should add I'm currently on maternity leave so I'm able to eat with kids. We all want together at 5.30 on weekends

Scarlettpixie · 21/11/2019 08:44

You are both being unreasonable if you think your way is the only way. It’s personal choice. Do what you want.

JorisBonson · 21/11/2019 08:59

5.30 / 6 for us. We're both up at 5 and in bed by 9.

ps1991 · 21/11/2019 09:08

DH and I both work from 7:30 and i pick our 10month old up at 4:30. Usually we try and eat before the baby goes to bed at 6pm. If its a day when i'm not working I can get a meal ready so we can all eat together about 4:30pm, we will then usually have a slice of toast or something similar for supper about 7ish. I am usually in bed by 8:30pm

doritosdip · 21/11/2019 12:12

How old are your respective kids? What are their bedtimes?

We eat around 6-7pm. My kids are secondary school aged so start getting ready for bed and winding down at 9 ish.

If I delayed until 8pm then they'd eat me.

What time do you go to sleep? I'd hazard a guess that it's later than your friend?

DH is never home before 7.30, usually closer to 8, so we typically eat at 8.15. DD (2 yo) eats at 5 and is in bed by 7. But I'm never home before 6.30 either.

I wish we could eat earlier - would probably be more healthy, but our hours at work are too long to accommodate that.

Feelingpoorlysick · 21/11/2019 12:29

Before children we ate around 7. 30/8. We now all eat together at 5.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 21/11/2019 12:56

Depends what time I finish work. If I finish at 5 we generally eat 6/6.30, if I finish at 7 generally 8/8.30.

My partner works nights do my tea is his breakfast/dinner just to complicate matters.

When the kids were small he ate with them around 6ish and I ate on my own if I was finishing late.

Defenestratethecat · 21/11/2019 13:01

DH gets in from work around 7ish and doesn't like eating as soon as he's across the threshold (neither would I, but I work from home so not an issue), so we have a glass of wine, listen to the Archers Grin, chat about our days and usually eat around 8pm.

DH cooks at the weekend and we usually eat around 7-8pm.

We have dinner with DMum once a week and we have split the difference between her 5 pm meal time and our 8pm, and eat around 6.30pm.

misskatamari · 21/11/2019 13:56

When I was working, pre-kids, we would eat between 6-7. I'm currently a SAHM, so eat with the kids around 5-5.30, and DH eats with us if he's home and later if not. It works for us. I'm hungry for dinner by then, and like to get all the kitchen mess sorted and tidied, so I can get the kids to bed and then chill out without having to cook and clean up. I don't like eating later on as I find I don't sleep as well.

I think it all depends what works for you. I go to bed about 10-10.30 most nights, whereas I'm sure many people stay up a lot later, so find eating later works best for them

AryaStarkWolf · 21/11/2019 14:22

Definitely try to have it before 7pm but it doesn't always work out that way with us both working FT

Celebelly · 21/11/2019 14:27

I work from home, DP works 8-4 usually and half the time is working from home too. Otherwise his office is like ten minutes away.

zingally · 21/11/2019 14:35

"Too early" or "too late" is nonsense, and purely down to the individual.

In a perfect world, I'd like to be eating by 6pm. But I'm often not home until well after that, and it can be 7 or beyond before I'm eating.

AcrobaticCardigan · 21/11/2019 17:32

We live in a major city - I’d say everyone we know eats after 7 - most likely due to working hours / commutes.

Pipandmum · 21/11/2019 17:38

When my husband was alive I'd wait to eat dinner with him about 8pm when he got back from work. Kids ate about 5.30. Now I eat with one of my kids at about 6.30 as I'm not going to cook twice (the other one cooks for himself and eats whenever).

U2HasTheEdge · 21/11/2019 17:40

About 5.00-5.30 here.

I tend to skip breakfast and lunch so I am ready to eat by 5.

littlepeas · 21/11/2019 17:43

We eat at 7 with the kids (11, 10 and 8) - it’s gradually been pushed back later and later - it was 6 when they were younger.

Pre-kids we ate at 9 - which was the earliest we could ever seem to manage. I’m in bed by 9 these days! Grin
