Or is my friend regarding evening meal times?

We’re in conflict about what time of day most people eat their evening meals.

She thinks that your last meal of the day should be around 6:30pm, with anything after 7 being far too late.

I think around 8pm is normal, and anything before 7 is far too early.

For context, neither of us have kids, and both start work at 9am.

Who IBU?

Me - YABU, anything after 7pm is too late
Her - YANBU, anything before 7pm is too early

Dinner normally between 5 and 6:30 here. Sometimes as late as 7. I’d be fading away if I had to wait much later than that.

daisym00n · 20/11/2019 20:53

No kids and I'm usually out 2-3 times a week at various hobby/night classes which all start at 7/7.30 so we’ve usually eaten by 6.30.

Phoebesgift · 20/11/2019 20:54

Between 7.30 and 8pm. Have an 11 year old and a 13 year old. They snack straight after school so we eat as a family.

BennyTheBall · 20/11/2019 20:54

It's a personal choice.

We have just finished dinner, at 8.50. This is our normal. I won't eat again for 16-18 hours.

WhereverIMayRoam · 20/11/2019 20:54

Nobody is BU, there’s no should about it. Like a pp we like to eat dinner as a family during the week as far as possible and with primary aged dc @ 6.30 works for us. Much later and the dc would be ravenous having had lunch at school @ 12 and just a snack at CMs after school. Quite possibly when dc get older we’ll all eat later. Surely people just do what suits their own circumstances?

klaudiarr · 20/11/2019 20:55

We had an early tea tonight at 7pm so will probably have something to eat before heading to bed at 1/2am. But normally the kids will have their tea around 5/6pm and then we'll have our tea about 10/11pm.

Pre-children our normal was 9pm as we wouldn't be home before 8.30pm usually. Now it's 5.30-6pm. I think it's hugely variable. However 7pm seems middle of the range.

HarrietTheFly · 20/11/2019 21:01

I can't follow your vote thing...sorry I just can't work out which corresponds to which but my vote is to eat later.

I eat dinner fairly late, mostly because when I did work (sahm currently) I wasn't usually home until 8pm on average. I eat between 9 and 10pm most nights. If I ate dinner at 5 or 6pm I'd be absolutely starving by the time I went to bed.

It doesn't matter to me when other people eat. I did have a friend who ate her breakfast, lunch and dinner at set times each day. I think it was 7am, 12pm and 6pm. I found it weird how rigidly she stuck to those times. She also said things like, "I have to be at a meeting at breakfast time tomorrow". "I'm meeting Sue at dinner time on Wednesday." - now that did annoy me. It's not "breakfast time" for everyone in the world ffs, your meeting is at 7am not at "breakfast time". Sorry...petty but it drove me up the wall.

BoxtheRight · 20/11/2019 21:02

So today I had spag bol about 10:30 and prawns on avocado toast about 2:00pm. Spag Bol for breakfast? That's something to consider!

Your first post doesn't make sense with who I choose to be unreasonable......you did a 180 on who thinks what, so how can we choose? How so? If you vote YABU, then you're agreeing with my friend that yes, after 7pm is too late. And YANBU agreeing with me that yes, before 7pm is too early.

klaudiarr what time do you get up in the morning to have tea at 11pm and go to bed at 2am?

honeyloops · 20/11/2019 21:02

Sometimes we eat at 6, sometimes it's 8.30, it really depends on what we're doing that day, although we generally tend to eat earlier rather than later. I like to not feel full of food when I go to bed!

MarshallPNutt · 20/11/2019 21:03

Yabu

I go to bed at 9pm and need some time for my dinner to go down first 😂

AliasGrape · 20/11/2019 21:03

By the time we’re both home, walked the dog, emptied the dishwasher, got changed and then actually prepared and cooked a meal it’s usually 7ish. That’s about right for me actually, but DP is quite happy to wait longer and eat later, but between 7 and 8 is fairly standard. At the weekend it can be anything from 5-10 depending on what we have on.

I lived with a family in Spain for a while who thought nothing of sitting down to eat at 11.30pm. Kids too. I got used to it when there but couldn’t do it now, and not just because I like to be in bed for 10 Grin

Bonkerz · 20/11/2019 21:04

Tea:dinner here is between 4-5. I don't eat after 7pm.

Ruddle91 · 20/11/2019 21:04

6pm is the latest I eat - tablets and medical conditions dictate it

BloodyCats · 20/11/2019 21:04

Can’t eat past 7 at the very latest. I have my dinner between 5.30 -6.30 usually.

theemmadilemma · 20/11/2019 21:06

Oh interesting. Between 8.30-9.30pm, both full time work, no children.

BarbedBloom · 20/11/2019 21:07

We eat between 5 and 6, no children. We go to bed at 10pm so 8pm would be far too late for us

ffswhatnext · 20/11/2019 21:08

I eat when I'm hungry. My appetite is dire. I've had dinner for breakfast before.
Had dinner at 2am.
Haven't had any today yet.
Yesterday was around 7pm.

SinglePringle · 20/11/2019 21:09

Don’t usually get in from work till around 7-8pm. Dinner - such as it is at that time - is around 30 mins later. Soup and stir fries feature heavily!

BoxtheRight · 20/11/2019 21:13

For those who've taken this thread a bit badly, we both realise it's not life or death. We were talking at 8ish and I was putting my tea in and she was preparing to go to bed. I told her I was going to spice this Wednesday night right up by consulting Mumsnet.

Depends on your work/life schedule. No one is wrong. Pre kids I used to have late dinners around 7pm. Now we all eat together at 5.30pm.

GetKnitted · 20/11/2019 21:16

AFAIK posh people eat late. Happy to help Grin

formerbabe · 20/11/2019 21:17

We eat at about 8.30/9pm once kids are in bed. My oh gets in from work at 7.30 and doesn't want dinner straight away.
