Or is my friend regarding evening meal times?

We’re in conflict about what time of day most people eat their evening meals.

She thinks that your last meal of the day should be around 6:30pm, with anything after 7 being far too late.

I think around 8pm is normal, and anything before 7 is far too early.

For context, neither of us have kids, and both start work at 9am.

Who IBU?

Me - YABU, anything after 7pm is too late
Her - YANBU, anything before 7pm is too early

We have ours at 8 (2 preschool DC, DH, who works office hours and me, a SAHM). I cook at 7 while DH had done time with the children on his own.

Other meals are breakfast at 8:30 (earlier for DH) and lunch at 2. On days when we go to preschool they have 2 snacks, before and after school roughly equalling the other days' lunch.

custardbear · 21/11/2019 01:22

7:30 onwards is my preference, DH is 30 seconds after he arrives home from work is Mr Hangry arrives (5:30 ish)

riotlady · 21/11/2019 01:29

We have ours at 8/8.30ish after DD goes to bed.

Creepster · 21/11/2019 01:53

My doctor told me years ago to eat 4 hours before bed to prevent acid reflux. I take food to be with me.

cheesemongery · 21/11/2019 01:58

I think it depends on what time you go to bed. Our evening meal is our main meal and we eat between 5 and 6. Kids in bed by 8 and I go to bed at 10-11...

I couldn't eat at 8 or 9 and go to bed at 10.

(maybe that's why I eat early... I do love my bed! She says at 2am hmmm - long story)

Hannahmates · 21/11/2019 02:27

I don't eat after 7pm. Dinner is 6 or 630 for me.

blubelle7 · 21/11/2019 02:49

Between 6-7. Only ate late in uni and in my early 20s when I was always out for dinner. Now will push it 8pm if we are going out otherwise no later than 7pm.

MissLadyM · 21/11/2019 02:51

I'm astonished that anyone gives a shit. People eat when it suits them ffs

dontgobaconmyheart · 21/11/2019 02:53

I habitually eat quite 'early'- about 5pm. Other people always find it 'too early' but I can't bring myself to care, or care when they eat- it's personal choice, no normal vs weird or right vs wrong applies.

SecondCity2 · 21/11/2019 03:23

Even when my children were younger we would not have eaten before 7. Now they are older, we eat anytime between 8.30 and 10. I hate eating when I have just got in from work. (Around 6)

billandbenflowerpotmen1 · 21/11/2019 06:03

I function at strange hours and only want to eat twice a day. Hence I try to have my last meal at around 4pm

hopefulhalf · 21/11/2019 06:12

The posh people eat late thing, I believe comes from the ability to cook after dark (and pay for the candles) in the 18th and 19th centuries.

We eat at 7:30 I would rather earlier probrably 6-6:30 DH would rather eat at 8.
DS is in his GCSE year and I have agreed to feed him at 5:30-6 so he can be free to revise.

adaline · 21/11/2019 06:49

I don't get in from work until 7pm so normally don't eat dinner until 8pm.

However on days off/holiday I tend to eat much earlier.

bellinisurge · 21/11/2019 06:52

When I was on my own I'd eat about 6 to 7. My dh prefers later.
If we all eat together (with dd, I mean) it's about 6. If it's just me and Dh, we eat at 8.

TheGlitterFairy · 21/11/2019 07:03

We tend to eat about 8pm as I don’t get home til about 6.30/6.45 and DH between 7 and 7.30. We might aim for 7ish on a Sunday evening if at home.
Each to their own though!

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 21/11/2019 07:06

If we've been to the gym dh and I eat anywhere between 7.30pm and 10pm
If we've not been so 3 days a week it's usually about 6.30pm.

KatherineJaneway · 21/11/2019 07:07

Neither of you is being unreasonable, you just have different views. To me I think most people eat at the time they do as it is convenient for their lifestyles at that moment in time.

I ate at 8:30pm last night as I worked late and public transport was up the spout. Usually it is between 7pm and 7:30pm simply due to my working patterns.

WallyWallyWally · 21/11/2019 07:09

7:30pm. This is considered shockingly early by most people where we live (France).

We eat dinner at 5pm, and I then don't eat again (although my DH has 'night food' before bed), this is technically considered 'most healthy' at the moment by science but given that these 'most healthy' things change every so often I wouldn't put much stock in that.

Before we had kids it was very normal for us to eat dinner at 9pm.

Neither is weird, neither is unreasonable. Does it matter that the pair of you eat at different times unless you're trying to work out when to hold a dinner party?

nakedavengeragain · 21/11/2019 07:17

Utterly barbaric and terribly common to eat before 7. Doubt we eat before 8 most days.

We are rarely home from work earlier than 7 anyway.

Allegorical · 21/11/2019 07:20

On work days I work till 4:30, commute and chill pick up takes to 5:30. Dh arrive between 5::0 and 6. Mum brings dinner one night, normally a cottage pie or stew( very lucky) and other nights it’s a quick pasta or pizza. Save my proper cooking days for the days I don’t work.

DwangelaForever · 21/11/2019 07:20

Two kids here and we all eat the same meal between 5 and 6.30. Just depends on what time my hubby gets home from work at. Unless its takeaway night then we put the kids to bed and have a takeaway closer to 8pm.

billandbenflowerpotmen1 · 21/11/2019 07:34

Lol

cherryblossomgin · 21/11/2019 07:40

I have my tea between 5.30 and 6.30 and have some fruit at 7pm. I go to bed at 9pm sometimes earlier. I start getting hungry at 4.30 some days. It usually depends on when DH gets home.
