Or is my friend regarding evening meal times?

We’re in conflict about what time of day most people eat their evening meals.

She thinks that your last meal of the day should be around 6:30pm, with anything after 7 being far too late.

I think around 8pm is normal, and anything before 7 is far too early.

For context, neither of us have kids, and both start work at 9am.

Who IBU?

Me - YABU, anything after 7pm is too late
Her - YANBU, anything before 7pm is too early

I'm a night owl and DH and the kids are, too. 7-8pm for dinner.

Derbee · 20/11/2019 21:37

We eat about 7 during the week, and 8-9ish on weekends but we’re 2 adults without DC yet. When we have DC I’m sure it will be earlier.

Bunney2020 · 20/11/2019 21:38

Anywhere between 6.00pm and 7.30pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Tuesday and Thursday we swim straight after work so then we usually eat between 8.30pm - 9.00pm (leftovers / freezer roulette so quick and easy). Weekends it depends what we're doing.

testing987654321 · 20/11/2019 21:40

Between 6 and 9. Kids have flown the nest so no routine now.

caoraich · 20/11/2019 21:41

I eat something tiny with the baby when we get home at 6pm. Not possible to eat earlier as that's the earliest we get home 🤷🏼‍♀️
Then dinner with DH when he gets in around 8pm.
Commute times and working hours vary massively and will of course impact this. The sahms I know are having their evening meal while I'm still half way through my afternoon clinic.

HicDraconis · 20/11/2019 21:41

We eat later rather than earlier - many reasons, mostly logistical. I don't get in from work until 6.30 at the earliest and I don't usually want to sit down and eat as soon as I walk in, some nights we have training and won't get in until closer to 9, so the boys have a snack before class and then we eat together when we get back.

If we ate at 5.30/6 we'd be hungry again by 9! We aren't hungry at 6.

(Breakfast usually 7am for boys, I skip it, 10ish for DH. Lunch usually 12:30 for boys, anywhere from 1 - never for me, 2ish DH. Dinner as above.)

milliefiori · 20/11/2019 21:42

We like to eat early. Usually at 6pm. Nothing makes me grumpier than hanging around for hours for an evening meal. I end up snacking then not wanting the food. If I eat at 6pm I don't feel hungry again all evening. It also frees up the evening so you can go out and do something. Eating at 8pm cuts into the night so nothing else can happen. By 8pm I like to be out at yoga or DH is out singing in the choir etc.

NataliaOsipova · 20/11/2019 21:43

Loads of threads on this; the only meaningful conclusion is that people differ! If you think about it, they must do - restaurants often serve from 6pm to 10pm. I’m definitely with you, though.

Bloodybridget · 20/11/2019 21:44

Anything from 6.30 to 8 for us, I will eat as late as 9 pm if I've been out, but DP wouldn't eat a full meal at that time

IAmNotAWitch · 20/11/2019 21:45

6:30ish here for sit down evening meal. Can easily be pulled either way though depending on who is home when and how hungry people are.

MyNewBearTotoro · 20/11/2019 21:45

7pm would be normal for me but anything between 6 and 8 would be fine. If I eat earlier than 6 I usually need another snack later in the evening. I wouldn’t usually eat a main meal after 8, I don’t want to go to bed with a full stomach.

Bluntness100 · 20/11/2019 21:46

We eat about 5.30/6. Got into thr habit when our daughter was at school. Anything later is too late for kids and ends up with them trying to fill up before dinner.

We have friends who eat at 9 ish and both their kids have weight issues, because they basically eat two dinners. Fill up when they come home, and then have their dinner.

We go to bed about 11. I don't get hungry after my dinner, I certainly wouldn't be ravenous and anything I did eat would just be because I felt like it and not because I was hungry.

reginafelangee · 20/11/2019 21:47

We generally eat about 530pm

blackteasplease · 20/11/2019 21:47

Before kids it was 8-9 I seem to remember. Since kids it’s 6. It was 6 even when they were very little, they’re now 5 and 11. I can imagine going a bit later when there’s not a bedtime routine to get through with the youngest.

MaryShelley1818 · 20/11/2019 21:49

We eat at around 6.30pm. DH gets home from work at 6.15pm and we like to eat altogether as a family with DS (23mths).
I haven’t voted as neither of you are being unreasonable, just do whatever suits you.

Natsel84 · 20/11/2019 21:50

Breakfast around 8am
Lunch around 1
Evening meal about 5/5.30
Piece of fruit later on
Cuppa and biscuit to take to bed about 11 PM

misspiggy19 · 20/11/2019 21:54

6-7pm. 8pm is later is too late for me

Officerthosearenotmysuitcases · 20/11/2019 21:54

I have my big cooked meal anywhere between 5:30 and 6:30 because I’m starving after work.
Then I have a light supper in front of the tv anywhere between 7:30 and 10.

I’d rather have my main cooked meal earlier because I like to relax more in the evening and not have to worry about cooking at 8pm

Shodan · 20/11/2019 21:57

We eat when we're hungry really. No H to take into consideration, I work from home, so ds2 and I might eat any time between 4.30 and 7. If I'm training in the evening it dinner time can't be any later than 5, otherwise I feel sick during class.

Ds1 does his own cooking and eats at very random times- it's not unusual for me to be heading up to bed at 11.30 pm and he's just putting some chicken in the oven.

But if I go out for dinner with other adults it always seems to be 7.30 we book for, which seems right to me.

BeBraveAndBeKind · 20/11/2019 21:57

Between 7 & 8 here, sometimes later at the weekend. Was earlier when the children were little but they're older teens now.

Answerthequestion · 20/11/2019 21:57

Certainly no earlier than 7, usually about 8.30 and tonight I’m just finishing now at nearly 10

Answerthequestion · 20/11/2019 21:58

But if I go out for dinner with other adults it always seems to be 7.30 we book for, which seems right to me.

For us 7.30 is an early meet up and 8.30 the usual meet time

SnowsInWater · 20/11/2019 21:58

When kids were younger and DH commuted kids ate 5-6 and dinner for us was always 9pm. We usually eat together now 7.30-8pm though it sometimes goes to 8.30.

CoffeeRunner · 20/11/2019 21:59

Well I work 12 hour shifts (NHS) so get home around 8pm. I eat maybe 9pm. Go to bed at 10pm & get up again at 5am.

PatriciaHolm · 20/11/2019 22:00

It's 10pm and I haven't eaten yet! 9 is normal for me, often later as DP and I go to the theatre/concerts a lot and eat afterwards.
