Or is my friend regarding evening meal times?

We’re in conflict about what time of day most people eat their evening meals.

She thinks that your last meal of the day should be around 6:30pm, with anything after 7 being far too late.

I think around 8pm is normal, and anything before 7 is far too early.

For context, neither of us have kids, and both start work at 9am.

Who IBU?

Me - YABU, anything after 7pm is too late
Her - YANBU, anything before 7pm is too early

I'm just home, hpme long enpugh to get dinner ready. DH was in abput 20 mins before me and fed the cat. We'll eat by 9.30. Normal for us.

Raspberrytruffle · 20/11/2019 21:19

Our dc have always had tea before us at 5pm ish, we get our tea after we've put them to bed with one of our daughter having cerebral palsy so we wait until shes settled and asleep because if she watches us eat even when shes eaten she gaggs herself for attention and we end up getting stressed and rushing tea, infact tea is finally cooked!

dementedpixie · 20/11/2019 21:20

My kids (age 13 and 16) eat around 6.30ish. Depending if dh is at football/rugby training our dinner can range from 7ish to 9ish

BuildBuildings · 20/11/2019 21:20

If 8 is normal for you I find it odd you would describe an hour before as far too early. Sounds a bit dramatic!

BillHadersNewWife · 20/11/2019 21:20

We have our main meal at 4.30pm....right after school. Then a sort of supper at about 8.00pm. Supper is things like soup or scrambled eggs....maybe a toasted sandwich or fruit, cheese and crackers.

We like it that way. I can't imagine eating a full cooked meal at 8.00. I'd be too full.

BoxtheRight · 20/11/2019 21:21

AFAIK posh people eat late. Happy to help

I've always thought I was posher than her, if I'm honest. This confirms it.

We eat around 5.

Pussinboots25 · 20/11/2019 21:23

About 7pm as I finish work at 6. But I wouldn’t say 8pm is too late I just prefer to eat asap or I get too comfortable and cba Grin

MargotB7 · 20/11/2019 21:24

AFAIK posh people eat late. Happy to help grin

Yes, this was the conclusion from the last thread about this. Ours differs all the time, depends what we are doing or what we've eaten in the day. It's me, DH & teenage DS. We are happy to just go with the flow.

june2007 · 20/11/2019 21:27

What is normal in my house hold has depended on work times but generally around 6-7.30 is my preference.

Stravapalava · 20/11/2019 21:27

We eat when it's ready! It's usually between about 6.30 and 9 though. There's no rulezzzz. You do you hun Grin

RiftGibbon · 20/11/2019 21:27

Usually around 9pm here. DC dinner time is around 5pm, which is way too early for me.

sewinginscotland · 20/11/2019 21:29

Before kids, we used to eat somewhere between 6 and 8, so this makes you both unreasonable. Happy to solve this tricky friendship dilemma.

We tend to eat at 5.30 with 1yo DS now. I actually love it!

MerryMarigold · 20/11/2019 21:29

6/6.30. I go to bed early so I don't like eating late. It's not good for digestion to eat less than several hours before sleeping. And it also puts on weight.

Msgiggles30 · 20/11/2019 21:30

About 6.30-7pm on a week day, I cant fathom people eating dinner before around 5.30; I would be starving again by 9pm Blush. Normally not home until 6 though. Weekends are random as sometimes dont even have lunch until 2-3pm

Bezalelle · 20/11/2019 21:30

Personal preference surely!

I like an early meal. Breakfast 7am, lunch 12, dinner 5, and a snack before bed. I hate waiting for food!

lottiegarbanzo · 20/11/2019 21:30

Do what you like.

I preferred 7-8pm pre-kids. DP preferred 6ish. We'd both have eaten lunch at the same time (12-1ish, though more 1pm for me) but he's a lark, I'm an owl, so different ideal bed times. And I am more posh, obvs.

You have switched it around in your OP, just read it through again. You've got the words 'me' and 'her' the wrong way around.

Appletreehouse · 20/11/2019 21:30

Pre kids usually ate around 6.30 -7 once we were home from work.

Now, if we're eating with the kids it's 5.30-6pm ish. If we're eating after they're in bed it's around 8/8.30.

IHaveBrilloHair · 20/11/2019 21:31

We used to eat at anytime between 6 and 8.
Now it's just me, I have my main meal anytime between 4 and midnight!

lottiegarbanzo · 20/11/2019 21:33

When do you both finish work and how long is your commute? That's a huge determining factor. Lots of people don't arrive home until 6-7pm, some even later.

Rainbowtheunicorn · 20/11/2019 21:33

I can’t eat later than 6.30 otherwise I have this horrible hungover feeling the next day. Need a few hours to digest before I sleep. I do have ibs though!

ForalltheSaints · 20/11/2019 21:33

My mum has the same approach as your friend.

My view is it depends on what you eat for an evening meal.

JemSynergy · 20/11/2019 21:35

Depends on lifestyle. My husband is still working at 6pm so by the time he commutes home he isn't back home until 8pm at the earliest. I eat with the children now but there were many years I would wait for him to come home.

escapade1234 · 20/11/2019 21:35

I eat with my DH long after the children are in bed. Depends what time he is home but we would rarely eat before 9.

GetKnitted · 20/11/2019 21:36
