To wonder why people don't vote Green?

malificent7 · 20/11/2019 07:52

Given that climate change is such a pressing issue, and lots of us are remainers i am amazed that more don't vote Green.
Someone i know said it was their overly pro trans stance but to me this is nothing compared to the threat of rising sea waters or desertification etc.
What am i missing?

I think a lot of people assume they won't get in, because of our FPTP system, so don't vote for them, which compounds the problem in further elections.

In Scotland they are pro-Scottish-independence which might put some voters off.

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 20/11/2019 07:58

Because they have crap/no policies on everything else

GeordieTerf · 20/11/2019 08:00

Because they think women have lady brains. No thanks.

FamilyOfAliens · 20/11/2019 08:01

They don’t understand what a woman is.

So I couldn’t trust them to look after the planet.

ShatnersWig · 20/11/2019 08:01

One major reason is because of first past the post. Apart from Caroline Lucas, who took time to build a very solid reputation locally, people see a vote for Green as a wasted vote because there is absolutely no chance of their candidates winning the seat they are standing for.

If we had full PR, I think more people would choose to vote Green but it wouldn't result in them suddenly becoming a significant political force and that would take time. But after a few elections, they could be.

Another issue is some of their policies in their manifesto don't stack up. They want to spend (sorry, doing this from memory) £100 billion a year on the environment but to do so, want to borrow £90 million per year. Which would be against EU rules. Yet they want to Remain. There's a problem right there.

ShatnersWig · 20/11/2019 08:02

*borrow £90 billion that should have been

AsMuchUseAsAMarzipanDildo · 20/11/2019 08:02

Aimee Challenor.

Ilikethedaffodils · 20/11/2019 08:08

I would vote Green if we had a different political system. But in my constituency (65% voted Leave) there is a very real and scary chance that the Brexit candidate will oust the longstanding, and very good, Labour MP. So I'm voting Labour.

joystir59 · 20/11/2019 08:10

Because I want the Tories out. And because my first choice is Labour.

malificent7 · 20/11/2019 08:12

The current political system means that people can't truly vote for what they believe which isn't very democratic.

Lady brains? Please elaborate.

GuppytheCat · 20/11/2019 08:13

We don’t have a Green candidate.

VikingVolva · 20/11/2019 08:17

"What am i missing?"

The rest of their policies?

They seem to favour a centralised command economy. That is Queen the controversial in itself, and I can see why that would be a shostopper for some, even if they fervently supported the environmental policies

VikingVolva · 20/11/2019 08:18

*quite controversial

(the Queen has nothing to do with it, and I'm not sure how she crept in)

Autumntoowet · 20/11/2019 08:19

I would if it wasn’t for Brexit
But I need the Conservatives to go

The Green Party - self identifying non-males www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3682424-The-Green-Party-self-identifying-non-males#89790769

AutumnCrow · 20/11/2019 08:24

Their views on sex and gender are incoherent. As a result they don't like women having freedom of speech about biological sex. And stuff like Aimee Challoner and child safeguarding breaches happen.

Ditto Lib Dems, Labour, and many Tories e.g. Penny Mordaunt.

I had a Green candidate at the door who couldn't answer a single question about women's rights. I'm not expecting much else from the others tbf, although at least Labour locally know and campaign about Waspis and maternity care issues.

horse4course · 20/11/2019 08:25

I do vote for them, but only to signal my concern about environmental issues in a safe seat. I probably wouldn't vote for them in a marginal.

Sexnotgender · 20/11/2019 08:25

The greens who have men and non-men? Those greens?

The greens who gave Aimee Challenor a platform?
Those greens?

No thank you.

YourOpinionIsNoted · 20/11/2019 08:26

Because they think women are non-men.

Because they stood by a parliamentary candidate who employed their father as an election agent while he was awaiting trial for child rape and torture. Offences which occurred while said candidate lived in the same house in which the rape and torture took place. (Convicted.)

Because they prioritise mens hurt feelings over women's legal rights.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 20/11/2019 08:41

As others have said, our political system by design prevents smaller parties from making a major breakthrough. I am a somewhat disenchanted Labour voter who would consider voting Lib Dem, or possibly Green, if I thought it was a meaningful vote. However, I live in a long-term Labour stronghold, so even if I did decide I was abandoning the party, I’d still have a Labour MP.

MoltoAgitato · 20/11/2019 08:43

I have no faith in their ability to manage anything, to be honest, and I have no faith in their ability to manage a successful economy.

Also the lady brain thing.
