to be annoyed that people at work can't spell my name correctly?

I have a common name that is spelt one of two ways (think, for instance, Jody and Jodie). I have lost count of the number of times that people at work email me saying "Hi Jody", when it's "Jodie".

I cannot understand how multiple people do this, multiple times. It clearly says the correct spelling of my name in my email address. I sign my emails with the correct version of my name.

EG

"Hi Sandra,
Please find attached the requested document.
Kind regards,
Jodie"

Response:

"Hi Jody,
Thanks for this.
Kind regards,
Sandra"

It is not an unusual name, nor a "yoonique" spelling. AIBU that it is just common courtesy to get someone's name right?

YANBU.

It’s Maddie and Maddy, isn’t it OP? Grin That’s what my DD gets all the time.

Yes, you wouldn’t mind so much if the correct spelling wasn’t in the actual email address they’re using - it’s not rocket science etc Grin

smemorata · 18/11/2019 17:19

I get this all the time ! The truth is - they just don't care so I don't either.

thefavourite · 18/11/2019 17:19

These are not even people I don't know, they are my colleagues!

Ahhhh! This is one of my pretty hates! My name has a common shortening (which I never use) and it annoys me so much that so many people automatically use it, even when I introduce myself with my name.

mrsbyers · 18/11/2019 17:23

Meh , happens to me all day every day - even family members have been known to miss one of my y’s out , used to bother me a little but not now

rainbowlou · 18/11/2019 17:23

My dd had this at work with a colleague called Nigel who kept replacing the y in her name to I.
It stopped after she addressed him in emails to Nygel Grin

AntennaReborn · 18/11/2019 17:26

I get it all the time as well.

What really annoys me though is that because it's not an English name, I occasionally get emails where people use my surname as my first name.

My surname is not something that could be mistaken for a first name (so not like Mrs John or similar) and although "forin", my first name is not massively unusual (think Nadia or Fatima)

It just shows lack of care

Clangus00 · 18/11/2019 17:31

Happens all the time to me too.

Likethebattle · 18/11/2019 17:31

I had two colleagues who never got my name right. It has one bounce letter and they always got it wrong.

E.g
Hi Craig
Please see attached as discussed.

Kind regards
Philippa (not my name)

Thanks Phillipa

Just no!

Nottobesoldseparately · 18/11/2019 17:32

My name can be spelt more than one way, however the first 4 letters are always the same no matter which spelling you use.

I've therefore concluded that people must just type in the first 4 letters and let the computer do the rest, hence I get my name spelt wrong in the body of the email.

My name is also regularly shortened to the first 4 letters. I don't like the short version, never have and never use it. I just don't reply when people call me it. I've been called rude, I just replied they were equally as rude to not use my name!

SillyBub · 18/11/2019 17:34

All. The. Time. from colleagues and even family members. Emails, birthday cards, you name it.

My name is not too far off from your example.

YANBU.

HundredMilesAnHour · 18/11/2019 17:36

I feel your pain. My name isn't all that common but it's not unusual these days either. It only has one spelling. It shouldn't be so hard.

However, I had people I worked with for THREE YEARS not only email me using the male version of my name (think Robert rather than Roberta) but they referred to me to my face as Robert as well. They saw me nearly every day for 3 bloody years so they knew I was female!! It drove me nuts. They just seemed to be oblivious.

This wasn't the first time it had happened. It's been all my life. It's only 2 syllables so no idea why people seem to struggle with my name so much. My name is much more well known in France and I've never had ANY problems with pronunciation or spelling there. French people I love you!

CatEyeliner · 18/11/2019 17:36

My name is similar to your example too and it drives me mad.

Cornettoninja · 18/11/2019 17:37

I have a first name that can be spelt about four different ways and a god awful surname that most people don’t even try with. It’s never bothered me to be honest.

There’s a woman at my work with a common abbreviation but a fairly uncommon spelling and my head just doesn’t compute it. I really, honestly try to but it just doesn’t work. Sometimes there are words that just never stick properly.

I’m more bothered by lazy capitalisation and punctuation Grin

CycleWoman · 18/11/2019 17:40

I get this daily.

To make matters worse I have a surname that is a common first name, so people I don’t know always call me by my surname.

Hi John,

Thanks for taking the time to meet me, as discussed please find the attached information.

Best Wishes
Jane Hillary

Hi Hillary,

Thanks for your email.

Best
John.

Instagrump · 18/11/2019 17:40

It gives me the rage. I just made an aibu the other day about neighbours/good friends calling me a wrong name. They know full well what my name is and it's not a nickname they're calling me, (think I'm Maria and they're calling me Marie). I think it's very rude to not ensure you're using the correct name, particularly when it's written in front of them as per your email example.

HundredMilesAnHour · 18/11/2019 17:40

I occasionally get emails where people use my surname as my first name.

I get this all.the.fucking.time. Angry Usually from offshore teams in India whose minds seem to be blown by not-at-all-complicated name.

Say my name is Roberta Smithy. I get either

Hi Robert

or

Hi Smithy / Smiddy / Smibbly / Thithy / Dithy

I kid you not. I now tend to write my name as Roberta SMITHY to try to make my surname easier to understand that it's my surname. Hasn't made a blind bit of difference.

ChuckyMonkey · 18/11/2019 17:42

It drives me up the wall.

It just shows a complete lack of care and interest.

HighNetGirth · 18/11/2019 17:42

It is lazy, and annoying.

Even worse, I get people arguing with me about my surname, expecting it be be spelled a certain way. Now, I am not a genius but I do actually know how to spell my own name.

A friend of mine gets his (foreign) name pronounced correctly, until people see it written down. They then switch to saying it how it is written, sometimes after months or years of saying it properly. Think something like the Norwegian name Ole, which is pronounced 'Ulla'.

Somebodystired · 18/11/2019 17:42

I have a name ending in ie that usually ends in a y.

My director, who I have worked directly to for over a year, ALWAYS spells my name with just an i.

It's bizarre but I really don't mind. Been used to it my whole life and the name is the same regardless of how anyone spells it!

LynseyLou1982 · 18/11/2019 17:44

Yep drives me insane. It's always with the "I" the "D" and the "A" in my case. I know there's 13 days to spell it but I really really hate that way.

Sarcelle · 18/11/2019 17:52

My name gets the same treatment. It ends in a Y, but always spelt with a IE in emails, even though the correct spelling is in my email and often they are replying to an email where I have signed off in the same spelling.

I always try and spell people's names correctly, I hate it when I get it wrong. But one time I did, it was to somebody with a common first name except it had two LLs in in rather than one, so they spelt it unusually. I spelt it the more usual way and they contacted me and said BTW my name is spelt X with the two LLs. Except they had spelt my name wrong and ended it with an IE rather than a Y.

I said, noted. But also please note how I spell my name also.

I didn't get a response!

starfishmummy · 18/11/2019 17:53

YANBU. My workplace consistently spelled my surname wrongly. A letter came for me from management and I refused to take it until it was addressed correctly!!

(Straw that broke the camels back and I knew what it said because everyone got one)

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 18/11/2019 18:02

I have a friend who, for reasons unknown to me, turns my name into its French version. So, say I was Joanne, she'd change it to Jeanne and she pronounces it with an exaggerated accent and in all seriousness, as if she's making a special effort. I'm not French, she's not French, it's quite bizarre.
