to be annoyed that people at work can't spell my name correctly?

I have a common name that is spelt one of two ways (think, for instance, Jody and Jodie). I have lost count of the number of times that people at work email me saying "Hi Jody", when it's "Jodie".

I cannot understand how multiple people do this, multiple times. It clearly says the correct spelling of my name in my email address. I sign my emails with the correct version of my name.

EG

"Hi Sandra,
Please find attached the requested document.
Kind regards,
Jodie"

Response:

"Hi Jody,
Thanks for this.
Kind regards,
Sandra"

It is not an unusual name, nor a "yoonique" spelling. AIBU that it is just common courtesy to get someone's name right?

People seem to do this almost compulsively. My name is one which used to be quite unusual though it's getting more popular now, and the way I spell it is the way the vast majority of people with that name spell it. But I've grown used to at least five alternatives being used almost routinely.

The same happens with my surname, which is a perfectly well-known one even if it isn't in the Smith or Jones class. There really is only one way to spell it, but people constantly put a totally extraneous e between the two syllables. It's not even as if it's pronounced in a way which would make you think the e is correct.

I thought quite seriously about changing my name on marriage as DH's name is much more well-known, but he tells me that it's just as regularly misspelt so I decided not to bother.

Chocolatecake12 · 18/11/2019 18:36

I have this all the time too so I sympathise. I have an ie ending name and always get the y ending. Even after signing off an email.
So frustrating.

CactusAndCacti · 18/11/2019 18:37

I find it mildly annoying, but not worth getting bothered over. I do have to sign Christmas cards with three different variations of my name though.

Feelingpoorlysick · 18/11/2019 18:38

Yes, I get this constantly. Even my Mil has been known to spell it wrong.... 🤔

AgentProvocateur · 18/11/2019 18:39

I live and work overseas. I don’t think anyone has ever spelled my name correctly, and I’m usually addressed as Mr Firstname in emails. It’s not really something I can bring myself to care about.

spoonfulofsalt · 18/11/2019 18:41

I get this all the time. Back when I was in Australia, I doubt most of my classmates even knew my full name let alone how to spell it as everything was shortened by everyone!

icannotremember · 18/11/2019 18:43

I work with a Milley and every time I email her spell check resets it to Millie. Every time. And sometimes I forget to check and correct it so she must think I am rude but it's not because I don't know how to spell her name, it's because our email programme doesn't.

allthepeoplethatcomearound · 18/11/2019 18:43

I get this all the time!
People insist on calling me by/writing my name as the English variant and we don’t even live in England! It’s complete disinterest and very annoying

daisybrown37 · 18/11/2019 18:43

We had a Jonathan at work who was known as Jonny. We spent ages checking emails from him to see how he spelt his name (he didn’t sign them off and his email signature was his full name)

If it doubt we just went with “Hi”!

snowball28 · 18/11/2019 18:43

I get it with both names, think Emily and Emma. It’s not even the same damn name! Really drives me nuts not to mention my surname which for some reason EVERYONE adds an extra letter in despite it being written in front of them 🙄 it makes it into a whole different name.

It drives me absolutely nuts, I really think it’s quite rude to continuously get it wrong!

braw · 18/11/2019 18:45

This came to mind OP Wink

to be annoyed that people at work can't spell my name correctly?
RedSheep73 · 18/11/2019 18:45

yanbu. I get this all the time, there are 2 ways to spell my name, the normal way and the weird way. I'm amazed how many people ignore how I've spelt my own name and decide the weird way is much better!

Scribblescribbles · 18/11/2019 18:45

My neighbours son is called Harry. Does she call him that? No it's 'ARRY'!! Always in a loud voice even when just speaking about him. Sounds awful

Aragog · 18/11/2019 18:46

I have a name which can have 3 spellings. Mine is the most popular one. Still people spell it wrong - mainly the hospital despite having it corrected several times. With general people I don't mine really, but the hospital annoys me.

DD's name has too spellings - again y or ie. Hers is ie which is the least commonly used one. Often people get it wrong but tbh it doesn't bother her too much so long as it isn't close family and friends. Its easy done and she just corrects them if appropriate.

Marchitectmummy · 18/11/2019 18:49

I've had this most of my adult life, to be honest I don't care, there are a few ways to spell depending on whether it's English, Scottish or French spelling. The purpose of a name is to identify yourself then spelt right or wrong you know who they are referring to so to me there is no issue. I can't find time to be bothered about it.

So much so that for years a security guard at work called me a different but similar name. I corrected him probably 10 times and he just couldn't get it a complete brain block for him. I stopped correcting him and kept it as his own nickname for me.

Let it pass over you and focus elsewhere.

lonelyonee · 18/11/2019 18:49

YANBU I get this with my name also.
My name is more unusual than yours (I think) but even so they miss out an 'e' and just put a 'y', even on "official" letters etc... which not only REALLY annoys me, but clearly shows them for what they are... nonchalant, uncaring, and down right selfish. This is managers as well as other staff and colleagues 😤

Cineraria · 18/11/2019 18:50

I airways get the -a version of my name rather than the -e version, like Clara or Anna rather than Clare or Anne. It happens in speech and in writing, even if I've just been introduced, and particularly with people who are from countries that typically have a sounded vowel at the end of a female name. I think my name sounds wrong to them. I don't mind too much though. I think the A version is nicer.

DS1 has a name that had a standard English version which is fairly well known historically but quite rare in the UK and people quite often correct me by calling him the better known international version with the same spelling. DS2's name seems to encourage this (not actual names):

Stranger: and what are your sons called?
Me: this is Jesus and this is Hector
Stranger: Nice to meet you Hay-zoos, Hector. What lovely names, Clara!

CurbsideProphet · 18/11/2019 18:50

@FloreanFortescue

A Greater Manchester local dialect? I have the same issue Grin

PawPawNoodle · 18/11/2019 18:55

At my old job there was a woman who worked for another organisation that worked closely to mine with the same name but spelled differently (think Kayley/Kayleigh). This meant I got sent many, many confidential and gossipy emails about both her and my colleagues on a regular basis where people just typed the first 3 letters pressed enter and send. It was great fun.

FloreanFortescue · 18/11/2019 18:56

@CurbsideProphet no but not a million miles away!

haverhill · 18/11/2019 18:56

I have a moderately unusual but not complicated name which is a variant of a very simple, English name. I have been called every name starting with the same two letters you can imagine. It doesn't bother me at all, maybe it should!

Wafflecopter · 18/11/2019 18:57

I have a more unusual name, so I appreciate it’s harder for people who don’t know the spelling (i.e. I’m not e-mailing them so they wouldn’t know) to get it right.
However if I have emailed them, or know them, and they spell it wrong, I passive-aggressively do the same back.

‘Hi John,
Thank you for replying, is there any chance that I could get the invoice sent to my counterpart too?
Kind Regards,
Elle’

‘Hi Ellie,
Of course, I’ll do that right away. Do you have the spreadsheet for next quarter?
Kind Regards,
John’

‘Hi Jon,
Thank you.
Not at present no, but I’ll forward it to you as soon as do.
Kind Regards,
Elle’

If I’m feeling super petty I’ll drop the ‘kind’ from kind regards too. Grin

MerryDeath · 18/11/2019 18:58

YANBU spelling names correctly is something i was taught to pay attention to. most people don't give a shit though. my partner has a perfectly normal name spelt a perfectly normal way but barely anyone ever will repeat it back to him, even when it is right in front of their faces eg an email, correctly. i suggest you do your best to ignore it as it's not worth the energy, or you could always start spelling their names incorrectly back to them!!

SiriusBlackAndHisHippogriff · 18/11/2019 19:17

It hacks me off when my boss does it. Like, do you not value me enough to spell my name correctly?!

OP posts:
Tabitha005 · 18/11/2019 19:18

Happens to me all the time, too. I re-iterate it constantly and even, sometimes, actually reply with - my name is spelt "xxxxxx", and it still gets spelt incorrectly.

Then again, I'm constantly amazed by the lack of care and attention that goes into written correspondence in business and the workplace these days - and find myself wondering whether it stems from poor grammar and comprehension, dsylexia, time constraints etc. There surely can't be very many excuses for CONSTANTLY spelling someone's name incorrectly, though?

Also, if you're dsylexic, or know you've got terrible grammar or comprehension, employers should put measures in place to assist. I've worked with a few people who've been up front about struggling with it and I've always been hapy to help - in exactly the same way that I'd ask for help or assistance with things I'm not so good at in the workplace (planning and prioritising, for example).
