I have to dsc 4 and 6, twice this weekend they used the word fart. The first time I was looking after them on my own so told them it wasn't a word we use. Today they used the word again, DP didn't seem to bat an eye lid (although did later agree with me). I think if they were older I wouldn't like it but would accept it more. Is this inappropriate or am I being a prude?

I wasn’t allowed to say pop, fart, bum or willy. My mum had twee alternatives which made my sister and I look like posh twats in school.

Poo was jobie. That word still makes me feel ill.

DioneTheDiabolist · 17/11/2019 20:24

We used to use "trump", but it means something very different now and the farts find it offensive.
Grin

TooManyPaws · 17/11/2019 20:27

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I think the 1950s are calling, Hyacinth. You going to start insisting that they talk about toilets and serviettes next?

Mind you, when I was away at school we used to laugh at the housemistress who called the bog the lavvy. Can't remember any other word than fart though.

LimaOscarLima · 17/11/2019 20:27

Anal whispers 😂😂😂

We say fart or poop, I try not to swear and I definitely don't see fart as a swear word.
My ds3 happily corrects me when I say for goodness sake he'll say for fucks sake Blush I think I subconsciously swear under my breath occasionally

Fandoozle1 · 17/11/2019 20:33

The word “fart” is offensive? What a time to be alive.

ilyjccs · 17/11/2019 20:38

That's not healthy😳 Not using the word fart, fine, but not talking about them at all?
Farts are natural and in some way healthy. We create gas no matter how much we wish we wouldn't. And it has to go out. How can you discuss that they are not appropriate at certain situations if they are never discussed?

We have a saying "1 fart is better than 100 doctors"😁 My mum's appendicitis was actually discovered to be a stuck fart in A&E

Thankfully I’ve never needed to discuss it with anyone so it’s not proven to be unhealthy at all.
I’m 23 though so perhaps I’ll one day get to the age where it’s necessary to discuss that function with a doctor...

How did you get to 23 and never mention farting ? 😂

PixieDustt · 17/11/2019 20:51

Oh c'mon 😂😂😂

itsgettingweird · 17/11/2019 20:53

I say fart.

So of course my ds used it from an early age.

It's just a word. It's not swearing.

Whattodoabout · 17/11/2019 21:04

You sound like my Mother. Fart is not a swear word, not even close. Get a grip.

MsRomanoff · 17/11/2019 21:05

Why is trump better than Fart?

Topseyt · 17/11/2019 21:46

I love that some people still apparently use "trump" to mean fart. Grin

You would have thought that Donald Trump as US President would have made them rethink that one. What do your kids think whenever they hear about President Trump? It must cause hilarity.

I'm old enough to remember Trumpton on children's TV. Despite the name, none of the characters ever farted. Not that I can remember. Perhaps it would have added to it if they had.

Just call a fart a fart FFS.

honeylulu · 17/11/2019 22:11

You should read the book "Dr Dog " where Grandad farts the whole roof off. It's the favourite book in my daughter (year 1)'s class, mainly because of that bit!

SoupDragon · 18/11/2019 07:18

You would have thought that Donald Trump as US President would have made them rethink that one

Or, perhaps, deliberately not 😂😂

I'm surprised some people haven't heard trump used for fart. When the kids were small I remember referring to them as Captain Trumpy Trousers when they were farting (it made them laugh. I have no problem with the word fart). Donald Trump's name has always made me snigger childishly.

KnickerBockerAndrew · 18/11/2019 08:57

Well there are plenty of other words for passing wind hmm popped, blown off, etc. Fart is fairly vulgar. I don’t let my children say it, but then they still throw out the odd bugger off so can’t say I’d be too upset by it

And yet you're absolutely fine with using the word "bugger" as an insult.

NotAClue101 · 18/11/2019 09:00

I was expecting to see you say they were swearing or something. Fart isn't exactly the end of the world. If you really don't like it, guide them to your preferred word for when they fart Hmm

My Grampy use to always say a 'botty burp' as kids we found it hilarious

wonkylegs · 18/11/2019 09:07

OP can you explain why you think trump is 'better' than fart?
Personally I think you are getting het up over nothing it's not like they are swearing just using a word you don't personally like.
Little kids like talking about body functions, if you ban it then they are more likely to use it and it's a word used widely. Just don't use it yourself and don't dwell on it and you might find they use it less.
You might not like it and it might make you cringe but it's generally not considered unacceptable for kids - Despicable me, loved by kids this age even has Fart Guns in it!
In this house they are farts or trumps but DS2 sometimes calls them bubbles because that's what they call them at nursery - I'm personally not that keen on this one (something to do with moist association of bubbles makes me cringe) but I wouldn't even think to say something about it.

Cohle · 18/11/2019 09:09

In real life I've heard anyone say anything but "fart" to describe breaking wind. Saying something like "popped" or "trumped" sounds unutterably twee.

bluerad · 18/11/2019 09:15

You'd better hope they aren't given the book Poo Bum for Christmas. It'll seriously annoy you!
