To ask about Jeremy Corbyn and anti semitism

So having decided to vote labour I had a conversation with a Jewish work colleague who said she couldn't vote for him, hated him even. It took me a few seconds and then i realised why. I said that I had stuck my fingers in my ears and my head in the sand somewhat about this, hoping it was just the media etc.

We didn't get into it as I could see she was uncomfortable.

So can someone tell me if and why he is an anti-semite? It doesn't sit well with me to vote for someone like that but I desperately want the Tories gone and my politics is definitely to the left.

I'm honestly not being goady and I know I could google but i wouldn't know where to start to get an unbiased view

i I don’t believe that’s an impartial guide to what actually happened, is it

I am simply trying to explain why a group of people who have been expelled from over 1000 cities and countries and have been slaughtered in their millions, when they finally achieve a state of their own, are going to go to any lengths necessary to defend it.

If you can't understand that, you haven't got a hope of understanding the conflict.

The Israelis aren't acting out of spite. They're acting out of fear.

Idonthaveaname35 · 19/11/2019 00:09

The Jewish people and the Palestinians need to find a way to live in peace. The settlement building should stop and they should be allowed to have sovereignty over their own borders.

Halleli · 19/11/2019 00:11

The Jewish people and the Palestinians need to find a way to live in peace

It's all very well saying that. Very simple. Far harder to find a way of actually doing it.

Can you lay out a situation in which Israel can withdraw from the West Bank and open its border with Gaza without endangering its civilians? If you can, you've achieved something that no UN Commission, US government or EU body ever has, so congrats.

blighter · 19/11/2019 00:13

I don't think that all who criticise Israel are Jew haters. I never said that. Plenty who are critical of Israel are not BUT all Jew haters enjoy getting on the anti Israel band wagon

Idonthaveaname35 · 19/11/2019 00:14

If just withdraws. It doesn’t because it doesn’t want to. If Israel gives them their rights then groups like hamas will become obsolete.

Oh and tell me, how does more illegal settlement building safeguards Israeli citizens?

HeresMe · 19/11/2019 00:15

@Idonthaveaname35

If after reading the full thread, if you don't think he is a antisemite then he is incompetent if he isn't.

ArseDarkly · 19/11/2019 00:18

And extend it. Good to see some more honesty on here.

They are not acting out of spite, they are acting out of might. Yes, I believe fear is at the base of it all. it can never excuse such dominance, violence, and pitiless suppression but it does go some way to understanding it.

blighter · 19/11/2019 00:19

I actualy agree with the last comment from idonthave. I wiuld love nothing more than for the Palestinians having their own land. I also think that the settlement building should stop 😊😊. You know there are many towns in israel where israelis/israeli arabs live together really well although you never read/hear about that over here

GlitchStitch · 19/11/2019 00:19

If Israel gives them their rights then groups like hamas will become obsolete.

Killing Jews is part of Hamas' charter. They don't want Israel to exist. Do you think they will just go away quietly?

Halleli · 19/11/2019 00:20

If just withdraws. It doesn’t because it doesn’t want to. If Israel gives them their rights then groups like hamas will become obsolete

Eh? Hamas doesn't even control the West Bank. Fatah does.

Hamas controls Gaza, and it took control after Israel withdrew. And guess what happened? Rockets raining down on Israeli civilians.

If Israel withdraws from the West Bank, then NOWHERE in Israel will be out of range of rockets.

The Palestinians have not accepted that they will not be returning to the land that now forms Israel. They still consider themselves 'refugees' when they have been living in Gaza or West Bank towns for 70 years. They still think they will defeat Israel. Until they accept that they won't, it will not be safe for Israel to withdraw.

Idonthaveaname35 · 19/11/2019 00:22

As a matter of fact I do. Hamas are being manipulative and the Palestinians will turn on them if they believe that Hamas are trying to destabilise them having their own land

PeterOhanrahahanrahan · 19/11/2019 00:22

And extend it

I guess you haven't noticed that Israel has given back 94% of the land it occupied in 1967. When I was there, the whole West Bank, Gaza and Sinai was under Israeli control. Funny kind of expansionism.

Idonthaveaname35 · 19/11/2019 00:24

Jewish people and Arabs have a lot in common and it makes more sense for them to be allies than enemies.

Halleli · 19/11/2019 00:24

And extend it

Sure, cause Israel is totally this shape

Halleli · 19/11/2019 00:25

Fuzzy, naive sentiments get us no closer to a solution.

Idonthaveaname35 · 19/11/2019 00:30

The solution can start by extending the hand of honest and truthful negotiations. Nothing fuzzy about kindness and compassion

Or is violence the only alternative?

Halleli · 19/11/2019 00:33

The solution can start by extending the hand of honest and truthful negotiations

If it was that simple, it would have happened already. Do you think Israel likes being surrounded by neighbours who want to destroy it?

It's all very well to proselytise like that from your lovely, safe home in Britain, but you have no idea of the lived reality of people in the Middle East.

Idonthaveaname35 · 19/11/2019 00:36

I think the nuclear weapons Israel has at its disposal is comforting for them. Especially as other nearby countries aren’t allowed to have them ( with the exception of India and Pakistan)

Halleli · 19/11/2019 00:41

I think the nuclear weapons Israel has at its disposal is comforting for them

Very possibly so. But it's not quite as easy for them to use them as it was for the US on Japan, is it?

No matter what Arab country (or Iran) they nuke, Israel will also be affected by the radioactive fallout.

Halleli · 19/11/2019 00:42

The chances of them actually using them are next to none - and I'm fairly sure Arab states know that.

They also have chemical weapons etc which I’m sure they would use if attacked
