To take my children off school and travelling for a year?

Just the title really.

They'd have guaranteed school places for when they return.

Just looking for opinions and pros/cons while my husband and I consider.

Hmm difficult one. I can see why you'd want to and I've read about families that have done this, but it depends on the age of the kids. If they are 10 and under then I think it's probably okay, but if they're older than that then I wouldn't do it.

Which year would the 12 year old be missing? If it's year 9 then no I wouldn't. Year 8 depends a lot on the kid and your ability to teach him.

Would you be home educating for the missing year? The volume of work in secondary would be so hard for him to catch up, if not.

The 12 year old would be missing year 8 - my kids go to a private school who would provide teaching resource (packs etc) so we would be able to keep on top of it for all three.

I’d do it. I think wistfully of doing it now, but DH would never go for it.

Definitely do it!!! They will learn so much travelling, just in a different fun way! Memories will last a lifetime.

Do it, most people don’t get this opportunity with jobs etc but if its able to work for you then def go for it

I think this is your last opportunity, as PP said, Y8 is about as old as you’d want it. So I say go for it!

I wouldn't at secondary age. Surely the school can't give a year's worth of work and I wonder if he would feel on the back foot for some time. I'd look maybe to go for 3 months or so over the summer where they would miss the last few weeks of the summer term.

Definitely. Year 8 is often quite neglected on schools anyway. 7s - got to settle in, 9s - either starting or prepping for the GCSE courses, 10/11 - GCSE, 12/13 - Alevel. 8s are a bit nothingy!

As long as you have their schooling thought out and covered, then absolutely I would do it.

How are you going to take teaching packs for a whole year with you?

Go for it! Education is more than school. If done well this is an amazing opportunity for your children.

The school would provide the work on a termly basis (via email/ on there online portal) - and we would be paying reduced fees for the time period. Additionally we will pre pay the first term for when we would get back from travelling - almost like a security deposit.

Obviously me and DH would work to provide the info/work for any gaps.

Do it. You won’t be 80 years old thinking - oh I wish the kids never travelled the world for that year...
