really stuck. I have a 9 yo DD who is a tomboy. she doesn't really play with toys anymore but is not quite a teen either. I am really stuck this year.

she likes reading so I will be getting some books but other than that? She is not into clothes and prefers to wear the same old rugs over and over again (but that is a whole separate post really, sigh).

she has toys but doesn't play a lot with them. she often 'hangs out' with her friends but less now the weather is crap and it's getting dark early. She does martial arts several times a week but has all the stuff. She is just a bookworm really who does martial arts and doesn't care about much else....

Help! I cannot be the only one who is stuck with a pre teen who isn't into toys anymore.

Bike? Skates? I was a bookworm who did marshal arts. I would have loved things like those bird handling experience's or something like bounce below?

Beesandcheese · 09/11/2019 20:09

*martial

Novemberblu3s · 09/11/2019 20:11

she has several bikes already depending on which terrain she is cycling - no prizes for guessing DH's hobby. I have probably outed myself now Grin

she doesn't want skates. too girly she says

A switch

longestlurkerever · 09/11/2019 20:14

My dd is 8 but also a bookworm. She likes Harry Potter so I have bought tickets for the Studios, plus some extra Harry Potter bits from Primark and a couple of books. She wants things like paniers for her bike too.

flashingbeacon · 09/11/2019 20:23

Speaking as a former bookworm interested in little else:
How to write a novel/poetry book? They have then aimed at kids and less you through bit by bit.
Puzzle books, they have sophisticated ones now with various levels of skill required
Maybe some craft kits, rock painting or similar if skates are too girly I’m guess soap making would be.
Stationary

I’m definitely projecting because these are things I would have wanted at 9 and therefore what I have bought 9y/o ds.

Quitedrab · 09/11/2019 20:26

You could get her an ereader? I got my daughter a kindle and she uses it all the time, especially when travelling.

Also one of those click together electric circuit kits could be fun. Or a pocket knife.

PoppyFleur · 09/11/2019 20:27

Would your daughter appreciate experiences like Go Ape? Or planned days out to say the Natural History Museum or the planetarium? Or a safari park day out?

Spied · 09/11/2019 20:28

Remote control flying drone/ heli-ball type thing?
Tickets to see a play of one of her favourite books ( our local theatre has lots of adaptions around Christmas time)

ichbineinstasumer · 09/11/2019 20:30

Manga drawing book and pens

orangeteal · 09/11/2019 20:35

Does she like Lego? The hidden side Lego is really cool, point a phone at it and can interact with it, all spooky themed.

Nicolaw06 · 09/11/2019 20:39

An annual pass to a theme park?

Novemberblu3s · 09/11/2019 20:40

thanks for the ideas. some things may work for her!!

An xbox

AwkwardFucker · 10/11/2019 02:51

Mine wants a Nintendo switch. I wasn’t really planning on spending that much but I’m considering it because I don’t know what else to get, but I don’t know realistically how much it will get used. 😕

FixItUpChappie · 10/11/2019 03:16

Mine still likes toys but is just starting to transition

We are thinking of getting him:

A Snowboard
A Gravitrax set
A Stop Motion Animation Kit
Board games - Fire island and maybe Scotland Yard Jr.
Watercolor pens
A Crystal Growing kit
E.T. DVD

Josephinebettany · 10/11/2019 04:22

Have you taken her to a large toy shop for a stroll and asked her what she likes the look of? Or handed her a large toy catalogue and asked her what she likes?

Rubyupbeat · 10/11/2019 04:40

Take her to a skate park so she can see aggressive skating; she will see there is nothing girlie about that and then gage whether she it's something else she could get into, present solved. Only saying that as my son competed in a certain martial art , motocross and aggressive skating so it may be a certain connecting path .

Whattodoabout · 10/11/2019 06:07

Nintendo switch. He’s wanted one since they were released but I couldn’t justify it because has had various other consoles and an iPad. He’s a bit ‘nerdy’ and Nintendo is his favourite so it really will make him so happy. It’ll just be that, a couple of games, couple of books, Pokemon cards and clothes this year. He hasn’t played with toys for a long time.

HardySwine · 10/11/2019 06:20

Between Christmas and her 10th birthday my 9 year old is likely to be getting an iPad, a SUP, drawing/art equipment, practice hurdles and books. That pretty much sums up her life!

Booboostwo · 10/11/2019 06:32

A year’s supply of books on demand. I was a bookworm (and still am when I have time) and this would have been a magical present for me at that age.

Deedoubleyou · 10/11/2019 10:39

My 9 yo dd is getting a Chromebook. We dithered on it for a while but she loves making PowerPoints and writing, and hasn't asked for anything else.

LellyMcKelly · 10/11/2019 10:43

A chemistry set. That would keep me occupied for hours!

Chocolatemouse84 · 10/11/2019 11:05

Mines 10 but getting
Anki overdrive
Magazine subscription
A lego set
Art and craft stuff

My 8 year old wants a kids fit bit instead of anki overdrive but will pretty much get the same bits as 10 year old

I have found it harder as they have gotten older as I don't want to go down the phone or consoles/TV for bedroom route yet, which they both asked for but they are both reducing the amount of time they play with actual toys and have big thinks like bikes/scooters and a tablet each.
