To think if a carpet is pissed on it should be replaced?

Or at least professionally cleaned?

I'm taking an adult human here. Not a puppy or something.

It's been 'cleaned' by the pisser but I can still smell it.

It's an old carpet anyway but AIBU to want SOME money towards it being replaced or the pisser to pay for it to be professionally cleaned?

@thatmuppetshow that's a bloody ridiculous waste of resources. No wonder the worlds in such a fucking mess when people would throw away something perfectly usable rather than just clean it, when it is perfectly possible to effectively clean.

Yes in the OP's situation she's replacing it anyway but you have clearly stated you would replace any carpet that had this kind of spillage on, that's just so wasteful. More totally unnecessary landfill.

LolaSmiles · 09/11/2019 19:18

Hardly worth the few hundred quid a deep clean would cost to disinfect and clean the mess, especially if it's in the floorboards by now.
I'm seriously wondering how much urine people produce where floorboards etc will be flooded and damaged.
We've had multiple dog accidents and had unfortunate plumbing issues and even on taking flooring up to check didn't have enough damage to warrant replacing a whole carpet, ripping up floorboards etc.

I do wonder if lots of big claims about the probable state of the carpet/floorboards is because it's a horrible drunken piss situation rather than looking objectively.

Butchyrestingface · 09/11/2019 19:21

I am horrified that so many posters would merely try to clean and would actually keep the carpet. It's vile.

Of COURSE I’d keep it. It’s urine, he didn’t Chernobyl the carpet. Confused

ThatMuppetShow · 09/11/2019 19:22

MyKingdomForBrie
I don't like carpets as it is, nothing will ever convince me to keep second-hand carpets when I move into a new property! And one that has been heavily urinated on? Seriously?
Yuk. Can't think of anything more disgusting.

I work hard enough so I can at least offer a clean home to my kids.

I have dogs by the way, but puppies are never left in a room where they could do damage the floor when they have a pee. Neither would I change a baby's nappy on a "pristine" white or grey carpet like I have seen some people doing, then getting into a state when spillage happened Grin. Funny, but very grim.

ThatMuppetShow · 09/11/2019 19:23

I wouldn't. I'd rather put a temporary floor for the sake of a month or so...
WHY would you even stick with it exactly? Laziness?

picklemepopcorn · 09/11/2019 19:30

I'm actually very anti waste, make do and mend etc. But this is an old carpet that needs replacing anyway,

And it's a FULL Male bladder's worth! That's totally different from a child or a puppy. It wasn't cleaned up immediately, so almost a litre of urine has been soaked up by the carpet and underlay.

Shenanagins · 09/11/2019 19:35

£450 sounds an awful lot for an off cut.

We got one for £60 for a space of around 3m x 4m. So it’s worth asking what they have lying around.

Butchyrestingface · 09/11/2019 19:39

Because I’m not scared by a carpet that has been cleaned. If I hadn’t been planning to replace it, I definitely wouldn’t be getting rid of it. And if I had, another month of it in situ wouldn’t unduly bother me.

The things is, I like carpets. I have no desire to have swathes of laminate or stripped floorboards in my home. So I would rather suck up the stained-but-cleaned carpet for a short period than expose the floorboards or spent money on a temporary covering that I will likely hate.

ThatMuppetShow · 09/11/2019 19:47

but the "smell"! It stinks! I couldn't put up with that.

A stained from red wine or a mug of tea, fine, it's only visual, but URINE? Nope.

goodwinter · 09/11/2019 19:59

A little insensitive on a thread where OP says she's on disability benefits and can't afford a new carpet.

Butchyrestingface · 09/11/2019 19:59

but the "smell"! It stinks! I couldn't put up with that

And there have been suggestions on the thread about how to tackle that. 🙂

ThatMuppetShow · 09/11/2019 20:14

A little insensitive on a thread where OP says she's on disability benefits and can't afford a new carpet.

can't afford it until Christmas, and advising her to waste money on cleaning a carpet that will be binned in less than 2 months is pretty stupid.

I'd rather stick a few packs of Metro on a bare floorboard than letting my kids walking on dry piss, and even if I could afford to, I wouldn't waste my money on cleaning and disinfecting a carpet that is due for the tip.

GrumpyHoonMain · 09/11/2019 20:18

I have cleaned piss from carpets (caring for adults with special needs) and provided you use carpet cleaner and scrub the piss smell goes away fairly immediately. However as it’s an old carpet have you ever deep cleaned it previously? If not then the lingering smell may be all the crap you spilled on it before.

MollyMorals · 09/11/2019 20:49

technically there's no excuse to puke anywhere else than in the toilets, but I am guessing accidents do happen

An adult urinating on a carpet when they are drunk is no accident.

BMW6 · 09/11/2019 21:00

As you are getting rid of it later I'd just get it up and out now instead, and put up with bare floorboards meanwhile.

EntropyRising · 09/11/2019 21:35

So you wouldn't breed puppies then???!!!

Hilarious! No! Not the least because of the carpet!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 10/11/2019 13:06

Not surprised he's a former friend with this incident in mind!!
Is he proving difficult to contact?

How appalling - I mean, bad enough for it to have been someone who lived at the house - but a guest?? Utterly repulsive. Angry

I'd be so mortified I would be falling over myself to help out to cover costs - but then I wouldn't piss all over someone's floor and just leave it - ugh!

TheWernethWife · 10/11/2019 15:04

Bloke pissed all over OPs landing carpet and didn't tell her for 7 hours later, in that time urine would have soaked through the carpet into the underlay and possibly on to the floorboards. OP you need to rip it all up if that is the case or cut the offending patch out and cover with a mat. I'd live with bare scrubbed boards myself.

Waveysnail · 10/11/2019 15:14

I would cut out the damaged part. Put mat over it until your replacing. I'd expect friend to give you money for cleaning

MatildaTheCat · 10/11/2019 15:24

Oh dog peed on our sitting room rug when he was on steroids and unable to hold on during the night. ( why not a hard floor ??🙄)

The stench was atrocious and that rug went to the tip. Soaked right through the underlay and into the wooden flooring underneath. So I’m not overly optimistic about the smell being cleaned away.

Having said that if you charge for a clean then get it cleaned.

Betty777 · 10/11/2019 15:52

my friend's DH has done this before - he is a deep sleeper and occasional sleepwalker, especially when away from home.

He has previously locked himself out of a hotel room (naked) and on a separate occasion she woke him up just as he had started to wee in the corner of their hotel room (where their bathroom would have been at home) Woke him before it got too bad (ish)

NB I don't have time to read whole thread and see if OP explained how it happened - maybe this guy was just being an arse

EntropyRising · 10/11/2019 16:48

They really prefer a carpet, sadly.

YouJustDoYou · 10/11/2019 17:29

I've had dogs, and kids, pee on my carpet. Having been a cleaner, man's piss stinks for some reason. If a man pissed on my carpet, you'd bet he's fucking replace it.
