To think if a carpet is pissed on it should be replaced?

GeometricGiraffes · 09/11/2019 14:57

Or at least professionally cleaned?

I'm taking an adult human here. Not a puppy or something.

It's been 'cleaned' by the pisser but I can still smell it.

It's an old carpet anyway but AIBU to want SOME money towards it being replaced or the pisser to pay for it to be professionally cleaned?

Cut the pissy bit of carpet out, so the boards underneath can dry. Pisser pays for cost of cleaning, which you can put towards new carpet after Christmas

tolerable · 09/11/2019 16:42

distilled*clear\white vinegar and water will remove the smaell.

Yoohoo16 · 09/11/2019 16:46

I would ask tell them it’s so awful, it needs replacing. Make them feel bad so they cough up some money towards it then replace.
Don’t let them over ever again.

monkeymum2 · 09/11/2019 16:48

Anyone else crying loads watching the Children In Need documentary about the actors making the album. Found it so moving as great to see some amazing actors really being themselves. Got the album and LOVE it. Anyone else seen it heard it?

Mrscog · 09/11/2019 16:50

I would just scrub with carpet shampoo, so flora and then finish off with a special urine spray which gets rid of the smell (look on amazon). I would expect the pisser to pay for these products though.

Hahaha88 · 09/11/2019 16:52

I'm thinking it was the ops hubby who did the pissing.....

MrsMaiselsMuff · 09/11/2019 16:53

You can't expect betterment.

If the carpet needs cleaning now, then it's reasonable for your friend to pay for that to be done.

If you've no intention of having it cleaned now, and will just replace it as you were already intending to do, then asking him to pay towards the new carpet would be betterment.

What kind of carpet is it and how old? What condition was it in pre piss?

Pinkblueberry · 09/11/2019 17:03

Surely a dog pissing on it worse than a person? Either way, get some carpet cleaner and give it a good scrub.

StanleySteamer · 09/11/2019 17:05

To avoid "betterment" you could buy a secondhand carpet or cheap "end-of-line" offcut and put that down. internet search will pull up loads, or a few carpet tiles, to do you until you get the new one. does it have to look great and fit in with your decor. doubt an insurance company would pay up as they'll see this as a deliberate act probably, unless your insurance covers vandalism! But then some insurance worker will come on here and tell me I'm wrong. We once got a lounge carpet replaced when a guest set fire to one of those Amaretto biscuit wrapper things which are supposed to float in the air, it didn't and was setting fire to the carpet till she stood on it in stocking feet and put it out, burning herself in the process! If you have "replace with new" on the policy, then you may be lucky. I know some unscrupulous people would make something up and try to get a new carpet on the insurance, must be a common claim. spill bleach all over it for instance. Still have to pay the loading though and it could put your premiums up. We've only ever claimed twice and bizarrely each time it was for a burned carpet and was absolutely genuine.

GeometricGiraffes · 09/11/2019 17:09

It would be an off cut odd job anyway. Never had an ordered from a sample carpet in my life.

Am on disability benefit hence waiting till after Xmas cause I'd need to save for it.
Have put bicarb all over it. Hopefully that will curb the stink for now.

I might just do the £10 a week carpet thing.

TheStuffedPenguin · 09/11/2019 17:10

If you are a landlord and it is a tenant then you are not entitled to replace the carpet 100% . You are entitled to have it cleaned at their expense and if still not acceptable then there is a formula that is used to determine the amount based on how old it is. You cannot profit from a tenant .

Mummyoflittledragon · 09/11/2019 17:14

You should rip the carpet up or ask them to do it to dry out the floor boards and assess the smell.

GeometricGiraffes · 09/11/2019 17:14

Im not a landlord Confused

I live in a HA house.

OP posts:
Crunchymum · 09/11/2019 17:16

I'm also thinking it is DP or DS as no self respecting house guest would do this and not offer to pay for a proper clean Shock

GeometricGiraffes · 09/11/2019 17:20

It's not DP and my kids are little. It was a friend who is now a former friend. He did a half hearted clean up with a towel and water/washing up liquid and haven't heard from him since he left straight after that to catch his train.

It had also been sat there for hours (I discovered it at 9am in the morning, happened about 2am)

Sounds a bit grim - If it needs replacing fair do’s but I wouldn’t replace for someone pissing on it generally. Urine is sterile right? I’ve gotten rid of the smell from a memory foam mattress my son wet the bed on, by spraying with fabreze!
You should wash the area really thoroughly though as the urine can bleach the carpet over time as it turns alkaline and reacts with certain carpet dyes.

StanleySteamer · 09/11/2019 17:27

@ThatMuppetShow
*I am horrified that so many posters would merely try to clean and would actually keep the carpet. It's vile.

Confirm my habit to get rid of all the carpets the minute I have the keys to a new property.*

So you wouldn't breed puppies then???!!!
Have bought about 5 houses, plus one new one, never replaced ALL the carpets, would be SOOO expensive. Think replacing them all is a bit OTT, but then there are lots of people who replace the bathrooms and kitchen as a matter of course so whatever floats you boat!

Straycatstrut · 09/11/2019 17:30

I agree with a PP - get one of those carpet stanley knives and cut out all the carpet that stinks, and then get a cheap rug to put over the top.

Pisser should ABSOLUTELY pay you some sort of compensation for all the disgusting stress.

reluctantbrit · 09/11/2019 17:31

If you don't want a profession clean now (but I would still ask for a quote and get the money) go to the next pet shop and get a spray/cleaner for animal faeces incidents.

That stuff got the stains and smell out from carpets and car seats in our house when DD got sick or had an accident when ill.

ThatMuppetShow · 09/11/2019 17:36

So you wouldn't breed puppies then???!!!

huh?!? no, I am not really sure what you even mean.

Each to their own StanleySteamer, I have never kept a carpet in any of my properties - they are disgusting and the very first thing to go. It's nothing to add the cost of a new floor when you are paying for a new property anyway.

There's no carpet in my house, makes my life so much easier Grin

MaybeitsMaybelline · 09/11/2019 17:37

Honestly i would ave the carpets up now and disinfect the floorboards. Bare floorboards are preferable to piss. I would also contact him and tell him what you had to do and ask for a contribution towards replacement. Dirty pig.

jimmyhill · 09/11/2019 17:37

If you are replacing soon then a good old scrub with laundry liquid (bio ideally) followed by liberal application of bicarb will get rid of smell. Hoover bicarb residue up once carpet is dry.

A newer carpet you'd obviously want to be gentle and use special carpet shampoo bla bla but this will do for an old one that you just want to get the piss smell out of.

Elbeagle · 09/11/2019 17:48

What has breeding puppies got to do with anything?!
