To think I had the right away

Car A and Car B approach a junction at same time. Car A is turning right and Car B is going straight ahead.
Who has the right away?

Jesus, when you "go against the grain" on something like this you need to stop driving.

Thinking I probably had right of way in a situation like that doesn't mean I'd just drive at someone. In reality, in that type of situation, I'd assume it was unclear to the other driver too, make eye contact and work it out between us.

I'm sure I don't need to give up driving quite yet Grin

LannisterLion1 · 08/11/2019 21:00

The reason I thought A would have RoW is because B is giving way to traffic approaching from the right and A is approaching from B's right.

That's for roundabouts- giving way to the right otherwise cars would be regularly turning right into moving traffic if it was everyone.

PsychosonicCindy · 08/11/2019 21:06

I've asked my DH and he thinks.....Haha only joking!!!!!
(It's B btw)

dreichwinter · 08/11/2019 21:14

The general rule for priorities when emerging from crossroads is that right turning traffic should give way to oncoming traffic. The vehicle with the priority in the following examples is the same as if the two minor side roads were one major road, however do not assume that the other driver will comply.

RJnomore1 · 08/11/2019 21:17

Omg op please tell me you are a learner driver

You really shouldn’t be on the road otherwise.

B

DowntownAbby · 08/11/2019 21:24

FFS! It's not 'right if way' it's 'priority' you're talking about,.

And it's the vehicle going straight on which has priority.

Joerev · 08/11/2019 21:27

B

Whoever turns right has to wait at junction.

GertiMJN · 08/11/2019 21:35

Genuinely horrified that anyone would think A Shock

We know its not... "right IF way" jeeeeez

Thecazelets · 08/11/2019 21:42

This thread explains a lot - someone in the A camp nearly caused an accident on a junction near me recently.

donquixotedelamancha · 08/11/2019 21:43

I do know it is Right Of Way but I was literally typing as I speak.

.

You'd say 'that car has right away'?

Popc0rn · 08/11/2019 21:44

B

tillytrotter1 · 08/11/2019 21:49

I've never seen a junction where a road has a Stop sign in one direction and a Give Way in the other, seems odd.
I've often wondered if the US style 4-way stop junctions would work in the UK, you take your turn determined by arrival at the junction, they seem to work well in the US.

MsMustDoBetter · 08/11/2019 21:52

Right of way

Ohyesiam · 08/11/2019 22:05

You'd say 'that car has right away'?

Yes , because she’s from the south east. Like cuppa tea. Or the much maligned Chester drawers.

picklemepopcorn · 08/11/2019 22:14

Right o' way, as spoken sounds like right away.

However, I always think the key thing in that scenario is not so much sticking to the Highway Code as making eye contact and avoiding each other.

IRL, you can't assume the other person is going to follow the rule you think applies. You have to negotiate as you go!

Theresnobslikeshowbs · 08/11/2019 22:17

Have you only recently passed your test OP?

dreichwinter · 08/11/2019 23:27

@tillytrotter1 yes I agree. Driving in the USA is frequently awful, their drivers test is a joke but four way junctions work well. A simple first arrived at stop line, turn taking situation prevents the confusion that A drivers have.

maddening · 08/11/2019 23:56

Surely this is a cross road situation with a main road?

NameChange84 · 09/11/2019 00:01

For all of ten seconds I thought I'd been saying Right of Way wrong my entire life because Right Away sort of made sense...

Panic over.

And it's obviously B.

satanstoenailsandwich · 09/11/2019 00:09

Wow! Car B was already on the road, you don't pull out in front of a car that's already on the road. Pedestrians have right of way if they're already crossing just FYI so don't go running over them or anything.

CrocodilesCry · 09/11/2019 00:17

The reason I thought A would have RoW is because B is giving way to traffic approaching from the right and A is approaching from B's right

Is this a bad time to point out the fact that B is also approaching from A's right which puts rather a hole in that rationale as well? Grin

TheCanterburyWhales · 09/11/2019 06:16

Such a shame that every single smug twat correcting the OP's language has made a mistake as well.
Or maybe not. Karma is a wonderful thing.
If you like, I can point the mistakes out to you all, publicly, on this thread? Because, as some of you said on the "hilarious" thread you joined in last night, you'd want to know, right?
Or then again, maybe I'll go and copy all of your mistakes onto that thread?
