Car A and Car B approach a junction at same time. Car A is turning right and Car B is going straight ahead.
Who has the right away?

If you are crossing someone’s line you wait.

PawPawNoodle · 08/11/2019 18:10

If you had a stop sign (which would have a solid white line rather than the dashed one you drew) then you must stop and give way to any traffic before you manoeuvre. His give way would I suppose relate to the oncoming traffic from his right on the crossroad, not you.

Bcnamechanger · 08/11/2019 18:10

This is really simple. People turning right always get last place in the pecking order. Main road users first, straight/left turner's next, right turns last.

It doesn't matter who has a stop line or not.

ChessieFL · 08/11/2019 18:10

What if B was turning right rather than going straight on? Who would have right of way then??

coffeeforone · 08/11/2019 18:11

B has right of way. A is crossing B's path

SingingSea · 08/11/2019 18:11

My driving instructor said that neither driver had right of way in this sort of scenario.

SpiderHunter · 08/11/2019 18:12

Even if B had a stop sign they'd still have right of way over someone turning right across their lane in this instance.

It isn't "their" lane though. If it was there would be no give way signage. In this example one car is trying to join a main road from a side road (car A) and the other is trying to cross a main road from a side road (car B).

coffeeforone · 08/11/2019 18:13

What if B was turning right rather than going straight on? Who would have right of way then??

From the diagram it looks like B can't turn right as it's one way!

SpiderHunter · 08/11/2019 18:14

Those saying B had right of way - I really looked for this when I came across it and couldn't find any evidence for either car having right of way. I'd appreciate the Highway Code reference number if anyone has it.

BrokenWing · 08/11/2019 18:15

B going straight ahead had RoW

meyouandlulutoo · 08/11/2019 18:16

B

Disfordarkchocolate · 08/11/2019 18:16

B.

coffeeforone · 08/11/2019 18:17

Why would B even think to consider A if he is going straight ahead. The give way is only for the cars on the road he is crossing, no?

ChessieFL · 08/11/2019 18:18

coffeeforone I’ll rephrase - at a similar junction if both were turning right (so both crossing each other’s lane) who would have right Of way?

SpiderHunter · 08/11/2019 18:20

The give way is only for the cars on the road he is crossing, no?

As is the stop sign for car A.

Wilmalovescake · 08/11/2019 18:20

They had a Give Way but you had a stop sign!!! I’m a bit terrified you didn’t know this tbh.

mummmy2017 · 08/11/2019 18:21

www.highwaycodeuk.co.uk/road-junctions.html

The car can turn or go straight on.

Angelika321 · 08/11/2019 18:23

I would have said A. Only because A is turning right on to the road which B is going to cross over. Therefore A has right of way.

But objectively can see that neither have right of way if they're both approaching the road at the same time.

MaddieElla · 08/11/2019 18:24

The more I read it the funnier it is

TheTrollFairy · 08/11/2019 18:25

Why would you think you have right of way? You are crossing someone else’s path so to speak.
I think you should read up on the Highway Code.

Lulualla

It depends on accent. Say it like Phil Mitchell and you’ll get it.

SpiderHunter · 08/11/2019 18:28

181 refers to oncoming traffic. In this case there is no oncoming traffic because both cars are on separate side roads. The diagram shows quite clearly that the scenario 181 refers to is where two cars on a main road are both trying to turn right in to side roads. So not applicable to this scenario.

Lulualla · 08/11/2019 18:30

@Angelika321

Using your logic, you would then have right of way anytime you want to turn into a side street which is across the road from you. So, if you're driving down a main road and want to turn right, do you just whip your car round and expect the traffic on the other side of the road to slam on the breaks for you? Why would you think you have right of way if you're turning across traffic? You need to wait until it's clear.
