To think I had the right away

Car A and Car B approach a junction at same time. Car A is turning right and Car B is going straight ahead.
Who has the right away?

To think I had the right away

Did you genuinely think it was called right away? Like, you've gone through life saying "I have right away". And your husband has never corrected you? I always think these things can't be real, like Chester draws and all that, but apparently this is a thing.

I know I ribbed the OP, but in 2019, I think autocorrect has a lot to answer for. It seems obvious (to me) that a lot of "amusing" mis-types are down to spellcheckers. Or spear chuckers, as I've seen suggested Grin

It's one reason why being overly pedantic in forums is no way to live your life Grin

You were both on a “major” highway.
B Was continuing, in same lane, effectively going from Major to major road.
A was turning into minor road. Major to minor.

B had right of way. You were impeding their progress by cutting across their lane.

Myunicornis · 08/11/2019 18:41

OK, so I do know it is Right Of Way but I was literally typing as I speak.
The reason I thought A would have RoW is because B is giving way to traffic approaching from the right and A is approaching from B's right.
But I see my mistake.

Because there is no traffic on the main road , this then becomes a case of not crossing oncoming traffic, so you go after the car has passed you.

Staffy1 · 08/11/2019 18:41

I'm surprised someone who has passed a driving test would think A has right of way, but maybe it explains some of the atrocious driving these days.

Hingeandbracket · 08/11/2019 18:42

expect the traffic on the other side of the road to slam on the breaks for you?
In the spirit of the thread, that’s “brakes”.

BatEaredFox · 08/11/2019 18:43

Have you been driving long, OP? Confused

SpiderHunter · 08/11/2019 18:45

You were both on a “major” highway.

If that were the case, it would be the other road (the one they were crossing) which had the stop and give way signs.

Lulualla · 08/11/2019 18:46

@Hingeandbracket
Haha! Thank you! I've just paid for replacement brake pads as well, so there's actually no excuse for that one. And it's a correction I've made loads of times so no idea what happened there!

TheSecretJeven · 08/11/2019 18:48

I would say B has ROW but if I was B, I'd be watching for traffic nipping across/coming from the side streets regardless of whom gets priority.

CactusAndCacti · 08/11/2019 19:06

I do a similar set up of junction every day (one car going straight on, one turning right) technically the one going straight on has RoW. In reality everyone is just very careful and it ends up being a mixture.

Angelika321 · 08/11/2019 19:10

@lulualla in this specific instance if I was car A, (assuming both sides of the road I'm turning in to are clear), I'd presume priority over a car going straight over.

If I was in car B and could see car A turning into the road I want to pass straight over then I would wait for them to pass.

If there was a collision and the front of car A hit the side of car B then I think the fault would lie with car B.

Itsallpetetong · 08/11/2019 19:15

^ SugarPlum has it.

dreichwinter · 08/11/2019 19:22

B has right of way because they aren't changing direction.
A is changing direction which means they have to wait.
Otherwise B could drive into A while A drove across B's path.

Poppinjay · 08/11/2019 19:24

Going massively against the grain here but I would have said that A had right of way as they were already on the major road when they were crossing the front of B.

Sparklfairy · 08/11/2019 19:24

Tbf depending on the OPs accent it can sound like right away. Where I live in the south it's common to hear 'a' instead of 'of'. Like cuppa tea. Think that's where Chester draws comes from too. they literally hear 'chesta' Grin

OneHanded · 08/11/2019 19:24

B has right OF WAY for sure!

bridgetreilly · 08/11/2019 19:26

He only has to give way to you if you are ALREADY on the road going in the other direction. Not if you're turning into his lane. That's not how right of way works. You never have right of way for a way that you aren't already in.

mummmy2017 · 08/11/2019 19:31

If you both set off at the same time you would drive into car B.
Hitting his driver's side car door.
Does this not tell you that you drove into him...

Raspberrytruffle · 08/11/2019 19:32

I believe no one has priority at a cross roads? Sorry if I've looked at the diagram incorrectly.

safariboot · 08/11/2019 19:32

At first I would have assumed B has priority, but on thought, maybe neither has and it's first come first served. But it's a situation where as B, you should not be surprised if A nips in front of you!

I would have thought what would normally happen is A and B both wait for a gap in traffic on the main road, both proceed past their stop/give way lines at more or less the same time, and then A waits for B before completing their turn. Similar to how at traffic lights when turning right you advance on the green light then wait in the junction for a gap in the oncoming traffic.

Raspberrytruffle · 08/11/2019 19:35

Sorry I've made a mistake! B clearly has right of way, I didn't pay attention to the stop sighn where a is.

summedup · 08/11/2019 19:46

Fuck sake OP get off the road Confused

bridgetreilly · 08/11/2019 20:20

It is genuinely terrifying that there are so many people who think A has the right of way here. I really hope you aren't on the roads round my way.

LemonRedwood · 08/11/2019 20:49

Jesus, when you "go against the grain" on something like this you need to stop driving.
