I mean I've seen worse pictures but still.
Gross.

I've had a cold and sore throat but now I have this red swollen infected looking thing.

It's not part of my tonsils and it's definitely not a tonsil stone.

It hurts. But I've never had that in my life?! What even is that part of your throat called?!

I don’t get it OP

If your sure it’s not a tonsil stone (although many other MNers have said it is), It’s not an ulcer and it’s not ‘Quinsy’ - what exactly is it then ?

EwwwwGrossWTF · 09/11/2019 08:19

Why on earth do you think I posted? I have no idea!

I can go prove it wasn't a tonsil stone update.
I have a horrible throat infection. It was so swollen this morning that when I took a breath in it was a struggle. I've got a horrible cold, a nasty cough and poor youngest DC have the same thing. Their throats look hideous as well.
I'm that close to calling the OOH GP.

Not can go, fucking phone

If it’s bad enough to affect your breathing, ability to swallow liquids or saliva or you feel unwell in yourself- high fever etc you need to see someone e.g. GP, nurse practitioner etc. It’s hard to tell from the picture but it could be a quinsy or might “just” be bad infection. Either way, it needs seeing.
(I’m a GP)

EwwwwGrossWTF · 09/11/2019 08:36

I have no temperature at all, I'm convinced it's viral. Breathing improved once I was upright for an hour.

Just googled and don't think it's quinsy at all. The pain and swelling is further back from my tonsils and lower down. Right down to where my voice box is.

picklemepopcorn · 09/11/2019 08:44

It doesn't actually matter exactly where it is, for a quinsy. It's essentially an abscess in the throat and can happen more or less anywhere. But I think you'd know by now if it was.

I'd go OOH, as this seems unusual for you. I don't go for throat infections, I get them a lot and am always miserable with viruses/colds. I don't get sick bugs though, so can't complain!

picklemepopcorn · 09/11/2019 08:44

Muststopfaffing has said go, and they are a GP!

DaveMinion · 09/11/2019 08:56

I have no idea but admiring your fine tonsils lol. Just had mine removed at the grand age of 42 (a month ago today actually) and they were about 4 times the size if yours. I wish I’d taken a photo beforehand now.

MinecraftMother · 09/11/2019 08:57

This is mine! It's a cyst. It'll dissipate apparently.

Silvercatowner · 09/11/2019 09:04

It's a "weird thing", OP. Bodies do these quite often. You haven't got a temperature so its very unlikely to be tonsillitis or quinsy. Stop looking down your throat, keep taking the painkillers and you'll probably feel better soon.

GriseldaChop · 10/11/2019 10:45

MinecraftMother - that's the same as mine, it looks like a retention cyst like I suggested at the start of the thread. Hope you get sorted OP.

EwwwwGrossWTF · 10/11/2019 11:42

Thanks, I've no doubt it was a cyst just as you have described.
The whole back of my throat was swollen yesterday (all the sections past my tonsils) including my voice box.
Now it's in my chest, tight and wheezing.

I've got to go to court on Wednesday as a witness, I really need to fill ok when I get questioned!

I was half expecting to see a giant moth (a la Silence of the Lambs).

Disappointing.

I hope you feel better soon OP!

It’s not the best picture but I wanted to know this was and if I should worry about it

Ontheperiphery79 · 23/08/2023 04:37

Dunno, but could be a peritonsillar abscess. Mine started as teeny as that and I ignored it, so it took on a life of its own. 😅

Westpoint · 23/08/2023 04:59

Strep throat? I'm still pissed off they took Tyrozets off the market, those bad boys cured all sorts of throat maladies.
