To object to a religious song at a baby class?

SecondTimer2019 · 06/11/2019 11:22

I take my baby (6mo) to a baby sensory class and this week the theme was 'rainbows'. At the end one of the songs played was 'Who put the colours in the rainbow?', which I remember from my childhood.

It asks who created all the amazing things in the world and ends by saying things like 'It can't be chance' and 'God made all of these'.

I'm not religious and think this environment should be secular. Obviously my baby can't understand the lyrics yet but I still feel it is inappropriate.

I'm thinking of contacting the organisers to let them know my feelings.

AIBU?

YANBU OP. Your poor baby will now grow up to be a priest/nun/rabbi/monk or something.

You should think about sueing.Grin

@BertrandRussell

Christian Privilege? - What are you on about? It's a child song with a fleeting reference to 'God'

I lived in KL for 8 years, and if you want to see how a religion is truly privileged then I suggest looking there. Different tax rates, exclusive ownership of property, day to day preferential treatment in restaurants, shops etc

Yes OP, you are being very very precious and very OTT

P.S I am Aethesit and have never been offended by any carol, story or other nasty day to day event

LittleAndOften · 06/11/2019 13:40

Colours of Day "non-religious" chorus:

So light up the fire and let the flame burn,
Open the door, let Jesus return.
Take seeds of His Spirit, let the fruit grow,
Tell the people of Jesus, let His love show

Err... Hmm

Autumn Days I was never quite sure of though, are we saying the "great big thank you" to God? Enquiring minds need to know.

Haworthia · 06/11/2019 13:40

I’m with you OP. At a non-religious, paid for baby group, I do not want religious songs.

It’s bad enough when church playgroups try to evangelise to toddlers (and I’ve experienced that, several tunes).

kateandme · 06/11/2019 13:48

Haha.please. the boys down the round didn't have one of the sheep three bags full. Humpty Dumpty didn't fall off a wall. Jack and Jill didn't fall down the hill. You Don't Start Believing everything you hear in a beautiful hymn or song. Good luck with school and hymns and good luck with this Christmas and the carols. And then good
Bloody luck when he becomes of age when he starts listening to some of the music nowadays.

Aridane · 06/11/2019 13:52

I'm surprised at how unopen to debate others are. I asked a genuine question about something that is extremely commonplace but makes me uneasy. Is it not possible to debate politely?

Top tip: post in Chat rather than AIBU

@AmIThough
'I went to a CofE school and we sang religious hymns and said the Lords Prayer every morning and I'm still not religious and don't feel like it was forced on me.'

It was though- you didn't have a say in it.

I agree with you OP- presumably the area isn't very ethnically diverse, or they would never have dreampt of having an Xtian hymn there- the group would have to be secular so as not to alienate any communities.

Unfortunately, atheists never seem to count.

kateandme · 06/11/2019 13:57

This make you want to get my junior school hymn book out." To say great big thank you I mustn't forget"

Don't worry OP, soon you'll have more important things to worry about

Don’t you have the capacity to consider more than one issue? What a shame.

IrmaFayLear · 06/11/2019 14:01

I went to a church primary school and we had two hymns a day plus trooping off to church on occasion. The same continued at my secondary (although non-religious) school. I am not a religious person! But... I am glad I know so many hymns and carols off by heart. They often have beautiful words and melodies: you don't have to love the sentiment.

I was surprised when accompanying the Guides carol singing (that was another nine-day wonder for dd...) and I struck up off the carol sheet with Once in Royal David's City and... blank. None of the girls had heard of it. So then I went for Hark the Herald... still nothing. They only knew Silent Night and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Very sad, really.

Good on @SecondTimer2019 for accepting she had gone over the top. Smile

JacquesHammer · 06/11/2019 14:11

Don't you have the capacity to see the bigger picture Jacques? What a shame

Well yes, when it’s actually relevant and not bonkers whataboutery Grin

Amanduh · 06/11/2019 14:12

Ffs. Get a bloody grip. A big one. Also, thing song is amazing! Loved it at school.
WHO MADE SNAILS AND WHALES AND QUAILS?

Ditto22 · 06/11/2019 14:13

Whoever runs the class can sing whatever songs they like. If you don't like it, don't go. Or get a bit of a grip!

Amanduh · 06/11/2019 14:13

*this song..

BertrandRussell · 06/11/2019 14:13

Some of us do have the capacity to see the bigger picture, yes. That’s rather the point!

Purpleartichoke · 06/11/2019 14:15

A paid for secular class should be secular. I would complain.

Winniefred · 06/11/2019 14:16

Geez! If singing religious songs caused anyone to convert, the pews would be over flowing! Do you avoid going passed a Church in case you hear a hymn...do you boycott church weddings .... or funerals because your child might hear about some guy in the sky building rainbows or forcing one to walk through deaths dark vale? Do you reject friends who believe in ideology, religion or fantasy because you don't? It would make for a very narrow bigoted world! We were brought up by religious parents, attended church twice every Sunday and guess what...none of us kids grew up to be religious! My kids wanted to go to Sunday School with other kids, they grew up to be non religious! Get real, get rational, get smart!

churchandstate · 06/11/2019 14:17

I would agree, if what the OP had paid for was advertised as a secular class. I can’t imagine that was the case, though.

Purpleartichoke · 06/11/2019 14:17

I always ask if the class is secular before signing up.

fromthefloorboardsup · 06/11/2019 14:19

I'm the biggest atheist going but I can still appreciate religious songs (and carols) - I don't agree with everything in the lyrics of songs I like!
