To object to a religious song at a baby class?

SecondTimer2019 · 06/11/2019 11:22

I take my baby (6mo) to a baby sensory class and this week the theme was 'rainbows'. At the end one of the songs played was 'Who put the colours in the rainbow?', which I remember from my childhood.

It asks who created all the amazing things in the world and ends by saying things like 'It can't be chance' and 'God made all of these'.

I'm not religious and think this environment should be secular. Obviously my baby can't understand the lyrics yet but I still feel it is inappropriate.

I'm thinking of contacting the organisers to let them know my feelings.

Can someone explain to me what Christian privilege actually means or is it just another useful woke trope?

JacquesHammer · 06/11/2019 14:56

Access to state funded schools that are selective on faith grounds for a start.

BertrandRussell · 06/11/2019 14:58

Christian privilege means that Christianity has a special place in our society which is so entrenched that people don’t even notice. The fact that singing Christian songs in a non faith based playgroup might exclude people of other faiths, for example, is completely ignored. Or that non religious people may be uncomfortable with them is just mocked and dismissed. Remember this is ^not* a faith based group.

The traditions around Christmas exist because people who live at high latitudes need something to brighten up those long winter nights or we'd all go a bit mad.

The season is the reason for the season.

Also, Lent falls at the time of year when food supplies were low back when people relied on growing their own, and oddly enough the festival of rebirth currently known as Easter falls in spring, as the land comes back to life. Can't say as we bother with that one ourselves but it's pretty obvious where these things come from.

ginyogarepeat · 06/11/2019 15:03

*So what are you actually celebrating at Christmas then?
*
I'm celebrating time off with family and friends, lovely food and a tradition of gift giving.
Rather I'd ask what are you celebrating? Where in the bible is Christmas about Santa, rampant consumerism and gluttony? And I take it you partake in each of these?

rainbowvalley17 · 06/11/2019 15:04

It’s ridiculous to object to a verse about God, because you don’t believe there is a God. You don’t KNOW there’s no God. You CANNOT say there isn’t as fact. Erasing all talk of God because of YOUR beliefs is wrong.

One thing I have noticed, and many others have often commentated on......children that go to catholic schools (and therefore learn about God and often practice their religion) are better behaved than children who don’t. They just seem to have better morals. There’s a huge difference. I know which school I’d rather my grandchildren go to. What’s the worse you think could happen to your child, apart from mixing with the lesser behaved ones?

In this case it's about how atheists shouldn't have to hear the word "god" in a song because forcing such a song on their wee godless ears means that they become MOPE: Most Oppressed People Ever.
This is particularly useful for middle class, white people.GrinGrinGrin

What a lot of nonsense.

magicautumnalhues · 06/11/2019 15:09

@cannycat20 the mumsnet madness Twitter is hilarious - this one is perfect. I do agree that on the whole parents are in charge of religious teachings but this really doesn’t pass my give-a -crapometer, is the baby being damaged by other pop lyrics I wonder?

JacquesHammer · 06/11/2019 15:09

You don’t KNOW there’s no God

Just as you don’t KNOW there’s a God...?

mumwon · 06/11/2019 15:13

bangs head against wall - there are so many bad things that you might need to protect db from this is not one of them. Sometimes I think we are more Victorian than the Victorians with these new straight jackets of reinvented puritanism - which cannot be challenged or you will be declared evil & a sinner. & I reject the term cis

ginyogarepeat · 06/11/2019 15:13

I'm fairly certain that there isn't a God. Which one are you referring to by the way, seeing as humans believe in so many different types?
Regardless, there are plenty of schools, groups, activities for parents who want their kids to be raised in a faith. Can't us atheists just please have some secular activities/groups for our kids?

Don't even get me started on the Catholic nonsense. As about as immoral as any organisation can be (I say this having been raised as one, and attended four different Catholic schools).

BigFatLiar · 06/11/2019 15:18

You don’t KNOW there’s no God
Just as you don’t KNOW there’s a God...?

So you want to be agnostic rather than aethiest

Knowing there is no god is as much a statement of faith as knowing there is a god.

One thing in this life is certain - some day you will find out if there is or isn't a god. Unfortunately you won't be able to tell anyone the answer.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 06/11/2019 15:19

I'm loving the idea of catholic schools producing better behaved kids.

I must have imagined all those mass brawls between my non-denominational school and the catholic one across the street.

woodhill · 06/11/2019 15:19

I think the non -Christians do quite well in the UK as they can take their own religious holidays off within reason? And get the Christian holidays too.

Can't be bad!

MindyStClaire · 06/11/2019 15:22

Lol at the Catholic church being a fantastic institution to entrust our children to. Just, lol.

Sigh.

JacquesHammer · 06/11/2019 15:31

Nope. Firmly and devoutly atheist!

I was giving a facetious response to an oft spouted point!

Igotthemheavyboobs · 06/11/2019 15:40

Total atheist, firmly know there is no God, enjoy christmas as a winter party with the family and nothing else.

I love church hymns! Love being invited to weddings and christening so I can sing along, enjoy watching songs of praise. I find it a shame a lot of children will be kept from this genre of music. Some of it is truly beautiful.

ItsGoingTibiaK · 06/11/2019 15:47

A little tip I’ve learned - these kinds of songs are made much more enjoyable with a little subtle subversion. While singing along, just replace any mention of ‘God’ with ‘Dog’. 🎵 My dog is a good dog - yes he is 🎵

I’d find The Rainbow Song (red and yellow and pink and green) much more annoying for its factual inaccuracy, along with a whole host of other children’s songs (cows jumping over the moon, talking sheep, ducks defying gravity and swimming over hills...)

mumwon · 06/11/2019 15:49

while major mistakes were made within the RC church lets be accurate here - there were many other organisations, individuals, & religions - many of which were Christians - where disbelief that such things could happen by adherents & senior members & than the major cruelty & stupidity & cynicism that such things when discovered need to be hidden because of the damage to the church or organisation - in the past podophiles could hide because of this disbelief - on top of that there was also a world view in the past that people who made socially perceived mistakes (as seen at that time!!!) needed to be excluded & punished - don't think I am excusing them - because I am not - I think however that it is like criticising all social workers for those individuals who operate with poor practice. There is a lot of good work is done by religious groups & the actual real New Testament morals can be good basis for ethical living provided they are not reinterpreted incorrectly

mumwon · 06/11/2019 15:52

paedophiles - autocorrect

Alsohuman · 06/11/2019 15:53

That’s something I completely agree with. Apparently it’s rude, according to a recent thread to talk about dying or death - because we’re all immortal now. We’re out there to a ridiculous extent about sex but death mustn’t be mentioned. Just the Victorians reversed.

The most vociferous in their anti religion seem to accord it the greatest importance while those of us who don’t care much one way or another seldom give it a thought.

GeePipe · 06/11/2019 15:56

Do you object to nursery rhymes as well because they are dark. Oranges and lemons for example is about executing prisoners. Songs are songs. They are just nice to sing they are not an indoctrination.

SecondTimer2019 · 06/11/2019 16:01

Thanks, @blueladybird! I think you're the only person in 10 pages who's noticed!

But I am enjoying the rest of the debate. And heartened that at least some people may have had the same reaction.

YANBU OP! I'm quite dismayed at a lot of the responses here.

I would feel just like you.
