Words that I see on MN that make my teeth itch....

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 05/11/2019 22:44

For some reason, since being on MN I have developed an irrational hatred towards certain words that are overused on here....namely, "tat" and "snacks" and I don't know why, because they are words I've used in the past! Now, ugh.

And also, even though I've used it in the title, I hate the phrase "makes my teeth itch" it's almost as bad as "boils my piss".

Does anyone else have words that MN have put them off using? Or am I just a grumpy old unreasonable bag?

Hubby!! Not sure why but I really hate it. Hmm

MsJuniper · 05/11/2019 23:27

I say pudding for all puddings.

I dislike 'snack' far more than 'snacks'. They seem to say it at nurseries for some reason.

JacksonPillock · 05/11/2019 23:28

"Snacks"? Isn't that just a normal everyday word?

It's a bit like saying "I hate when mumsnetters use the word bottle".

??

CherryBathBomb · 05/11/2019 23:29

'Is your Dp always this rude? etc'

'Not read the full thread but..'

'Are you always this precious'

'LTB'

Oh and the grammar police Grin

Bellasblankexpression · 05/11/2019 23:30

little one or LO - for some reason the abbreviation annoys me more

CherryBathBomb · 05/11/2019 23:31

Oh, and 'No is a full sentence' Angry

f00k · 05/11/2019 23:32

"Tinkley laugh"

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 05/11/2019 23:35

"And what did s/he say when you spoke to her/him about it?"

Just say "Have you spoken to/do you feel able to speak to them...."

Both essentially mean the same thing, but the second is simply how a normal, sympathetic, non-PA person would phrase it....

AlexaAmbidextra · 05/11/2019 23:37

Did you mean to be so rude? Apparently this is a cutting and witty retort according to MN which will stop your aggressor in their tracks. In reality they’ll probably say ‘yes, I fucking did you twat’.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 05/11/2019 23:38

Another one for hubby! Absolutely hate that word

sayanythingelse · 05/11/2019 23:39

I hate it when posters say "think" as in "I have two children with traditional names. Think Sarah and Edward".

I don't know why but it just annoys me!

LumpyPillow · 05/11/2019 23:41

The DD, DS, DH, DP stuff too. I know its the longstanding done thing, but even describing awful abusive partners posters type in 'D'P. Just leave it off! Type out partner! Hate' 'DDog'. Just say dog, we will assume you love and think fondly of your dog, most people do.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 05/11/2019 23:41

I can't think of an alternative for snacks though. Am I being thick, what do you say instead lol.

You could always use the German equivalent - 'Jause' (pronounced yowzer). It's such a useful word, whether you want to refer to a 'snack', let everybody in earshot know that you've stubbed your toe or call it out repeatedly in a robotic voice at a disco when it's high time to really get the party started Grin

MissLadyM · 05/11/2019 23:44

Hun, hubby, toms (just say tomatoes ffs)!, sanpro, picky tea, yay! and probably many others...

InsertFunnyUsername · 05/11/2019 23:44

Using "Posh" to describe something, normally chocolates or some bollocks like that.

Not so much a word or phrase. But I realise I'm a miserable git when someone makes a Typo and there are hundred posts of "omg lol best thing ever 😂😂😂😂" and I am sitting there like 😐

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 05/11/2019 23:45

"I have two friends who are a couple - Persephone-Ottoline and Clancy-Agamemnon Ffffarquhar-Crustaceano (not their real names)"

f00k · 05/11/2019 23:46

I hate it when posters say "think" as in "I have two children with traditional names. Think Sarah and Edward".

Yes!

"DH has a hobby but I can't say because it's too outing. Think golf."

choli · 05/11/2019 23:48

Magic or magical when used in a post relating to Christmas.

midnightmisssuki · 05/11/2019 23:48

OhMyDarling · 05/11/2019 23:49

Sex not gender
Gender not sex

Whichever it is. I don’t care.

InsertFunnyUsername · 05/11/2019 23:49

Or when posters try to justify the smallest of things in case they get pounced on, it's so obvious.

E.g

I noticed they changed the recipe for Ribena the other day, it's the first time I've had it in years and I only drank some because it was a treat and it came free with my M&S meal deal I normally stick to water, I love the taste of water

user1471449295 · 05/11/2019 23:50

Cool sorry bro

AuntyElle · 05/11/2019 23:50

God, yes, sayanythingelse. “Think...” is hideous.

Also, speedy and treaty 🤮

UhareFouxisci · 05/11/2019 23:51

@NonUrinatInVentum pudding vs dessert vs sweet vs afters is a social class and geographical region marker and it is snobbish to think your own version is "correct"

MarthasGinYard · 05/11/2019 23:51

Batch cook

Makes me standby
