Or was Pizza Hut?

Took my DD (4) to the park after school. She suddenly announces she's desperate for a wee - no toilets in the park and it's a 15 minute walk home.

Park is packed with kids from her school and near a busy road with lots of cars going past - no opportunity for a quick wee behind a bush.

There is a Pizza Hut near the park and so I take her in there and ask nicely if we could use the toilet.

The waitress states toilets are for customers only.

I explain it's for my DD, she's only 4 and isn't going to make it home.

Waitress repeats toilets are for customers only and we would have to stay and buy a meal if we use the toilets.

Restaurant was practically empty, only one table occupied.

We left and of course DD wet herself on the way home, poor thing was really embarrassed.

WIBU to think a big chain like Pizza Hut could let a 4 year old use the toilet?

As an aside, travel potties are really good for this sort of thing!

Evilmorty · 05/11/2019 17:50

McDonalds also have this policy, I have seen thieves turfed out of the toilets for using it as a changing room for all the clothes they’d swiped previously. I personally am happy with the policy, it means staff can act to remove them m without it being a personal decision, it’s just a policy they are following.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/11/2019 17:50

Our local Matalan used to have customer toilets but they were removed . When I took DD (when she was 3yo) they wouldn't let her use their staff loo.

I had to let DD wee in a drain, and even though I was going to shop there , I left .
No sale for them .

Tractorgirlz · 05/11/2019 17:50

As it’s so close to the park they probably get every Tom, Dick & Harry using their toilets. They have to draw a line somewhere.

WorraLiberty · 05/11/2019 17:50

Name & shame them on social Media. My local Pizza Hut is on a retail park & is the only place with a toilet

I hope you named and shamed the retail park then?

Furiosa · 05/11/2019 17:50

SarahTancredi

Well that train of thought precludes ALL children & parents from using the delicate sewer system of PH then doesn't it? Including paying customers.

Better let a desperate little girl pee herself. OP asked for kindness/discretion and was met with company policy. Thats not ok, that not a standard we should hold anyone to. It wouldn't have affected them one iota! Why do they need their company poicy defending by people who don't even work for them? Madness.

Nat6999 · 05/11/2019 17:51

JaquesHammer we do use the Pizza Hut fairly regularly, but sometimes just go to the other shops on the retail park. I'm disabled & have bladder problems, I don't get much warning when I need to go to the toilet. I carry a Can't wait card & many places are very helpful & let you use the staff toilets. This retail park has several shops that are for children's clothing & baby equipment but don't have a toilet. I use another retail park where the only toilets are in a Costa cafe, never had a problem using their toilets, they are owned by the same company who owns the Pizza Hut chain, why the difference?

wineisnecessary · 05/11/2019 17:51

It's a 4 year old child she could of used some discretion. These rules are put in place because of cf's using the loo but a young child who does not have the best bladder control would be fine but some people do not have common sense.
I get your point but I'd leave it she enforced a rule end of why complain? , your daughter had a accident she's 4 I doubt she'd be embarrassed at that age .
I agree would of been good if your daughter had the accident at Pizza Hut that would of been most unfortunate.

PuppyMonkey · 05/11/2019 17:51

Blimey, it’s only a small child using a toilet, OP wasn’t asking them to run a bath and give her a head massage. Hardly CF territory.Grin

SarahTancredi · 05/11/2019 17:52

Staff toilets are for staff they are often near where staff are trying to take their breaks or full of staffs stuff and possibly not even really safe for customers to access. Why would you expect to be able to use them and who's meant to be working downstairs serving customers whilst leading you to the staff toilet and waiting for you as there will be locks/code locks

churchandstate · 05/11/2019 17:53

It’s the only standard we can hold people to. You can’t force people to be kind. Kindness isn’t an obligation.

TubbyMcTat77 · 05/11/2019 17:53

I'm guessing it was probably a young waitress who took company policy a bit too literally. Had it been someone more experienced they probably would have realised that they could use their discretion and no harm would be done.

As someone who suffers from ibs I totally understand the urgent need for a public loo and I'd be mortified in this scenario.

wineisnecessary · 05/11/2019 17:53

@SarahTancredi she wanted to use the customer toilets it was Pizza Hut .

SarahTancredi · 05/11/2019 17:54

I was responding the the other poster who moaned about not being able to use staff loos in matalan

IndefatigableMouse · 05/11/2019 17:56

Yep she should've used her discretion. I've been in a Home Bargains before with a desperate to wee 4yr old and they let me use their staff loo when I asked where the nearest public loo was. I appreciated how kind they were.

I wouldn't go to that Pizza Hut again if it were me. I'd probably complain too.

imnottoofussed · 05/11/2019 17:56

What you do in future is let them take you to a table and give you menus. Wait for waitress to leave you alone. Go to the toilets. Come back out and say sorry we've changed our minds about eating and off you go back to the park Grin

SarahTancredi · 05/11/2019 17:56

Young waitress. Too literal Hmm

I swear some of you have zero idea what state people can leave toilets in even when they have children.

Especially the mens.

Fishcakey · 05/11/2019 17:56

If people didn't leave public toilets in such a state then there wouldn't be the rules. Blame the dirty people who the staff have to clean up after rather than the waitress. In all my years in retail I never let a random use my staff toilets.

SarahTancredi · 05/11/2019 17:57

Exactly fish

Hows it the staffs fault.

Anotherlongdrive · 05/11/2019 17:57

Of course they have toilets. You think the staff hold it all day?

And everything you listed there, is the retail parks fault. The fact that they havent provided one, doesn't make pizza huts a public toilet.

Its still down to the retail park. Did you complain the shops for children, dont have public toilets?

PuppyMonkey · 05/11/2019 17:59

It is when you work in the hospitality industry surely?Grin

OnlineShopping · 05/11/2019 17:59

Too late now I know, but if we are doing anything at all after school then I get my four year old to go back into school for the loo when I pick up.

Considering Pizza Hut is so close to the park, if they let one child in then it means they will have to let them all in. Then if the children are allowed in, it means sometimes the adults will also use their toilets (or else pretend it’s for the child) and all of a sudden it’s the equivalent of public toilets. I think YWBU to expect to be able to use their toilets.

Anotherlongdrive · 05/11/2019 18:00

It is when you work in the hospitality industry surely?

To customers?

Roselilly36 · 05/11/2019 18:01

Just as puppymonkey says, name & shame, how ridiculous not to let a child use the toilet.

Scrumptiousbears · 05/11/2019 18:01

I think some are being harsh on Pizza Hut. If it is so near a park and the only toilet within reasonable distance then they will always be "used" as the local convenience.
