Or was Pizza Hut?

Took my DD (4) to the park after school. She suddenly announces she's desperate for a wee - no toilets in the park and it's a 15 minute walk home.

Park is packed with kids from her school and near a busy road with lots of cars going past - no opportunity for a quick wee behind a bush.

There is a Pizza Hut near the park and so I take her in there and ask nicely if we could use the toilet.

The waitress states toilets are for customers only.

I explain it's for my DD, she's only 4 and isn't going to make it home.

Waitress repeats toilets are for customers only and we would have to stay and buy a meal if we use the toilets.

Restaurant was practically empty, only one table occupied.

We left and of course DD wet herself on the way home, poor thing was really embarrassed.

WIBU to think a big chain like Pizza Hut could let a 4 year old use the toilet?

I don’t see why you’d not let a child use the toilet that’s pretty shit community spirit. Have you checked with Pizza Hut whether that’s a real policy because I won’t be going there again if so.

Nonnymum · 05/11/2019 17:24

I would send pizza hut a message on twitter or facebook and ask them if this is their policy and if so do they realise that families with children probably make up a lot of their customers and this attitude will make them think twice about buying anything from them.

SarahTancredi · 05/11/2019 17:26

Anyone who works in catering or any mimd of shop with a toilet knows that opening up their loos to anyone who walks in off the street even with a child means that the toilets end up in a right mess. People take drugs, drink alcohol, trash them,.leave shitty underpants , smoke and god knows wht else in them. Chances are if the staff are having to tell people no and explain.its customers only then they have had bad experiences. No good deed goes un punished as they say.

Willow2017 · 05/11/2019 17:27

Bad customer relations there.
Was in my fave cafe the other day queuing for coffee and a woman came in with same scenario. Barista told her no problem toilets are up there.

Who wants to let a child wet themselves?
Just because she let a 4yr old use the loo doesn't mean she has to.let everyone she could have used her common sense.
They could have gained a great review and a new customer but now the opposite.

JacquesHammer · 05/11/2019 17:28

Would someone really leave a bad review over this? Confused

Just chalk it up as one of those things and move on!

churchandstate · 05/11/2019 17:29

You say they could potentially have had custom from you, OP. Does that mean you have never actually given them your business?

Molly2010 · 05/11/2019 17:30

@gypsywater that’s harsh.
I think the staff member was wrong. I would be making a complaint about the branch. If it’s company policy he or she won’t get in any trouble but you can express your dissatisfaction at the policy.
I would have taken her to a corner of the park to do a wild wee, as opposed to wetting herself. My 4yr old would be really upset if that happened to her.

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 05/11/2019 17:30

The thing is if it's right by a park then it could end up being used by kids all the time so I can understand their policy

You could have been a bit smarter about it though - said confidently table for 2 please - been seated took child to the loo and then left.....

Furiosa · 05/11/2019 17:31

I use John Lewis toilets all the time without buying anything.

What's Pizza Huts excuse?

Don't worry OP everythings shit these days. If you can't make £££ out of someone don't do it. Human decency cost nothing therefore why do it is the moto. Can you imagine, a waitress actually giving a shit if a four year old used her restaurant toilets and preferring she wet herself instead? Fucking nonsense.

I'm just waiting for the gamma wave any day now..

gypsywater · 05/11/2019 17:32

@Molly2010 not really, harsh is letting your kid wet themselves because youd rather prove a point than just buy a snack/dessert/drink. If your 4 y/o was that desperate then why on earth wouldnt you just do this?!

adaline · 05/11/2019 17:32

Our toilets are technically staff only but there's no way I would turn a small child away like that!

YANBU.

TheDarkPassenger · 05/11/2019 17:33

Our local Pizza Hut let me use their loo when I was pregnant as fuck when they were shut for a gas leak!!

^ Clearly not horrificly strict policy so yeah they were being unreasonable.

However I would have let the kid piss in the bush even if there was people around rather than have her soaked with pee on a cold evening

Scarlett555 · 05/11/2019 17:33

Why didnt you just not be so tight and buy a snack or drink? Basically YOU let your child wet herself...

Bit harsh! The attitude of the waitress didn't really make me want to stay + had a lot of unforeseen expenses recently and money is very tight.

Was hoping DD would make it to the little shopping centre on the way home which has public toilets

OP posts:
JacksonPillock · 05/11/2019 17:34

There's not really any easy solution to this, is there? I mean, clearly the waitress has been told to implement this rule and doesn't want to get in trouble. Clearly the chain has the rule to stop people wandering in using their toilets all day long, as many do. Yes it sucks for you in this one specific case, but that's life isn't it?

If there's a pizza hut there then there must have also been other cafes/restaurants/pubs around that you could have tried after?

JacquesHammer · 05/11/2019 17:34

Genuinely for next time though at least you know to head straight there! (And maybe on the way to the park just in case)

ScreamingCosArgosHaveNoRavens · 05/11/2019 17:34

YABU. It isn't a public toilet. I don't understand why you'd expect to be able to use it without buying something.

Would you let a random person into your house to use your toilet just because they said they were desperate to go?

adaline · 05/11/2019 17:34

What a load of nonsense.

There's a massive difference between using your discretion and allowing a small child to use the toilet and allowing them to become a free for all!

churchandstate · 05/11/2019 17:35

The attitude of the waitress didn't really make me want to stay + had a lot of unforeseen expenses recently and money is very tight.

😂👍

Right, so you would rather your DD wet herself than you buy a Diet Coke? And it’s the waitress’ fault? Ha ha ha.

JacquesHammer · 05/11/2019 17:36

There's a massive difference between using your discretion and allowing a small child to use the toilet and allowing them to become a free for all!

And it’s far easier to have a standard policy the staff know rather than “use your discretion”. Especially at a place near a park which is likely to be abused by countless people wanting to use the loos without paying.

SarahTancredi · 05/11/2019 17:36

furiosa

People with kids can be the worst. Even when they are actually customers they leave wipes, crumbs, crushed up un definable food, spill drinks everywhere etc

Then bugger off again leaving the waiting staff to clear the crisp and risk and juice cement off the tables whilst trying not to slip on the water some.kid sat there and poured all over the floor.

A kid does not mean that a person is not going to make .mess, block.the toilet with a nappy or piles of wipes , leave the taps running or soap from the dispenser everywhere

CupCupGoose · 05/11/2019 17:36

I once worked in a pub where only paying customers were allowed to use the toilets. I once got sent into the women's toilets to tell some women that they weren't allowed to use the toilets if they weren't buying anything. So embarrassing but what else could I have done? So I don't think you can blame the waitress. She was probably only doing what she was told.

Brefugee · 05/11/2019 17:38

Tweet the shit out of it.
It's one little girl, ffs.

Furiosa · 05/11/2019 17:38

churchandstate gypsywater

Oh yeah, HAIL CORPORATE! Fuck off with simple notion that humans can be kind to each other. How much money would it cost poor dear old Mr Pizza Hut to let a little girl pee in his loo? Too much apparently Hmm

churchandstate · 05/11/2019 17:39

Furiosa

I go to Pizza Hut. If that’s “Hail Corporate!” then yeah, I don’t hate businesses I patronise as a customer. And the OP wouldn’t hate them either, if they had given her her own way.

rwalker · 05/11/2019 17:40

YABU it's near a park they probably have a strict policy or else everyone would be in .
A 4 year old surely you could of found a bush or something or her to go behind rather than wet herself.
