Or, he would, if he were to find himself in that situation. Having previously insulted the medical knowledge and expertise of a leading neurologist, he now advises ignoring fire service advice, saying those who died in Grenfell lacked common sense and should have left the building. AIBU to say this man's ignorance is an embarrassment and he is unfit for public service?

No it doesn’t, and it’s cringeworthy watching them try.

Bettyrubblespumps · 05/11/2019 23:27

However, the furore is because it was Rees Mogg that said it

What rubbish - the furore is because a privileged, privately educated t**t slates working class people because they're 'thick'

I despise the man - everything any female should abhor - yak

TomPinch · 05/11/2019 23:43

Why is he expressing his opinion on this? Why it's he even being asked? It's a question suitable for a member of the fire brigade, not a senior politician. His opinion is irrelevant.

Rows like this trivialize politics. He gave a dud answer to one of a billion trillion random irrelevant questions that he is asked and lo, it's a beat-up across the media by the terminally offended, and by those who don't believe they'll win an argument with him about his politics.

If only he had the "common sense" not to open his stupid mouth and utter horrific stuff.

Meercatsarecats · 06/11/2019 00:01

I'm not terminally offended.
I'm offended and disgusted that a cheap job was done on a building that hundreds of people had to live in.
A job that made that building unsafe for people to live in.
That the council had received complaints about the building and its safety only to be ignored.
I'm fucking heartbroken and offended for the 72 people who don't get to answer stupid questions anymore, and their families, and for all the people that had to watch that horror unfold in front of them and will never forget it.
It's more than offensive, it's fucking disgusting, awful, and criminal.
Of course jrm shouldn't have to answer questions about it, I very much doubt he's ever stepped one foot inside a tower block, or ever tried to empathise with the people who live in them.
As for trivializing politics, we're in the middle of the biggest fucking joke ever.
Why doesn't jrm keep his stupid mouth shut and stop trivializing the lives and completely preventable deaths of ordinary people.

  1. Rees Moggs Grenfell Tower "common sense" comment.
  1. Bridgens Rees Mogg is smarter than Grenfell victims comment.
  1. Gavin Barwell (who ignored warnings) is on Newsnight condemning common sense comments.
  1. Govt adds Rydon to their procurement framework for towers.
HelenaDove · 06/11/2019 00:06

On the day of the fire several of us on here predicted this would turn out in a similar way to Hillsborough.

TheQueef · 06/11/2019 00:16

Jacob Reese Mogg is hardly inarticulate, he knew exactly what he was saying and how to say it in a way he could weasel out of.
He was just showing his contempt for us inferior types and laughing up his sleeve.

Tossrag.

Meercatsarecats · 06/11/2019 00:27

And what happened with Hillsborough?
Lies, more lies, cover ups and lies.
It took nearly 30 years for those deaths to be ruled unlawful.
Duckenfield got a 7k fine.
Nobody has been to prison for it.
Hardly justice.
I do hope we can do better for the people of Grenfell.
Heads should roll over this, starting with whoever signed off on that cladding which turned out to be a literal death trap.

zsazsajuju · 06/11/2019 00:40

Is there any need to get hysterical about non issues when there are so many real issues? As pp said, in context it was a slightly poor use of words.

zsazsajuju · 06/11/2019 00:43

Also as I understand it, we don’t yet know who was responsible for the cladding as we haven’t done that part of the enquiry yet.amd this type of cladding was on many buildings.

Rumboogie · 06/11/2019 00:49

Rees-Mogg started his comment by referring to the death toll having been compounded by the stay-put policy which has been heavily criticised. Much evidence has been produced in this case to show that had residents ignored this, as would be the normal human instinct, many more lives would have been saved.

Indeed there was a piece on BBC radio recently where a resident, who was a retired member of the Portuguese fire service and lived on the 13th floor got his family out, together with friends living on the 20th floor.

The beginning of R_M's comment where he referrs to 'the more one's read over the weekend about the report and about the chances of people surviving....' has been conveniently left out of the reports of his comments. ie. he was referring to the evidence that the wrong advice was given, against the 'common sense' or instinctive action to leave the building.

And as for that ridiculous 'pastor' - he should be ashamed of himself, as should much of the media and some of the PP on this thread for misrepresenting the facts and stirring up an unnecessary frenzy.

HelenaDove · 06/11/2019 01:47

Its about a lot more than the cladding. Its about the attitude towards tenants to shuut up and be grateful (plenty of posts on past threads that prove this) And these attitudes are prevelant up and down the country as tenants who have had the experienced contractors like Robert Heath and Liberty Gas will tell you.

My posts about this subject date back to early 2015 when a housing association forced a tenant to have contractors in he home she had already had major concerns about. Their attitude was that they were the company they had given the contract to so she had to let them in. After what went on (and the fact that we faced the same risk) i rang Gas Safety in April 2015 and was told "we cant do anything until something actually happens" I knew there were problems going on with HAs and contractors but i was appalled. Ive kept notes and recordings from that time and they are stored somewhere safe along with my diary from that year which records when i made these calls.

When i looked into things a little further on my own estate and others and used social media to join with other tenant groups and blogs i saw how widespread it was and the attitudes these problems stem from. On the day of the Grenfell tower fire i was shocked yes. Surprised? No!

Grenfell survivors react with anger over Rydon's inclusion on government framework

Survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire have reacted with anger at the inclusion of the contractor which carried out the tower’s deadly refurbishment on a government procurement framework for high rise buildings

Rydon was the lead contractor for the £10m refurbishment of Grenfell Tower, which saw combustible polyethylene-cored cladding fixed to the walls of the building.

Last week, the inquiry into the fire decided that this cladding was the primary cause of the vertical fire spread and did not comply with building regulations.

The contractor was included as one of 12 contractors on the Crown Commercial Services new construction framework for high rise residential buildings in the south of England.

The framework allows government departments and other public sector bodies – including local authorities – to select contractors for publicly-funded projects.

It is estimated £30bn of work will be awarded under the framework, with the high-rise residential buildings section valued at £2.25bn

A spokesperson for Grenfell United, which represents the bereaved families and survivors of the blaze, said: “It is totally unacceptable that Rydon, one of the companies required to answer questions for its role in the refurbishment of Grenfell Tower, would be put on a government list that promotes it as a reputable contractor for other high-rise towers.

“It makes us question the government’s intention to learn the lessons of Grenfell. [The housing secretary] Robert Jenrick must suspend Rydon from this list and explain how the contractor under investigation for Grenfell ended up there.

The story was originally revealed by the specialist magazine Construction News.

A spokesperson for the Cabinet Office said: “There is absolutely no guarantee of a company securing government contracts just because they are on a framework. Under existing EU rules, we are not legally allowed to preclude Rydon Construction from bidding for government contracts.”

Rydon was appointed as the contractor for the Grenfell Tower refurbishment after a public procurement exercise run by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. It was said to have submitted “the most economically advantageous” tender.

The cladding was supplied by the giant American-based company Arconic, installed by Harley Facades and cut to shape by Omnis Exteriors.

The refurbishment work which Rydon carried out also involved the installation of new windows.

In the report, last week, Sir Martin Moore-Bick ruled that the “configuration and materials of the windows” created a “disproportionately high” chance of the fire spreading from the flat where it started to the cladding system

Found these interesting posts from an old thread. Posted by someone who said the same thing ive been saying for years. But her DH works/worked on HA homes.

LEMisafucker Thu 12-Dec-13 10:23:27

It is not ridiculous - my father worked all his life, my mother still lives in the 3 bed council house that they would have paid for ten times over in rent. It is not about moving pensioners out of their homes its about the money being paid in by people renting these properties being put back into the system and invested properly. Its about efficient repairs and moneies not being squandered going through middle man after middle man before the guy turns up on the doorstep to fix the boiler. My DP has worked on social housing contracts, subcontracting for a subcontractor whos is subcontracting for the main contractor who is farming all of this work out with god knows how many back hander with every little cog in the wheel syphoning off their money so where a job that DP would charge £150 for a days work (hes a carpenter) to a private homeowner, the same job is probably costing the council (the tax payer) £400 while everyone else creams their bit of money on top. He was astounded at the lack of organisation, waste of time, three people sent to do a job that could be done by one person etc. THAT is where the failings are, well, one of them, not allowing people who have paid into the system over the years to keep the homes they have paid for. Many pensioners CHOOSE to downsize, but even then suitable places are not available - you cannot put a pensioner for instance in a 1 bed flat on the fourth floor

There wouldn't be that problem of the maintainance costs if it wasn't such a lucrative business, contractors fall over themselves for SH contracts provide substantial "perks" its money for old rope. They pay underqualified workers a pittance of pay to get the work done quickly to a pretty poor standard and charge more than a premium job. So that argument for selling off the council properties falls a bit flat - there are people out there making substantial profits out of people falling on hard times

Pepperpot99 · 06/11/2019 06:26

What Meercat said.

If only it were the case that the Houses of Commons and Lords were found to be covered in the same cladding. We'd see the politicians' true colours then, wouldn't we? they'd get it removed in a flash. But those impoverished forrin council dwellers? naaah.

Loosenisous · 06/11/2019 06:28

I would like to put this cunt in a headlock.

Anyone who reveres him in any way is also a cunt.

Pepperpot99 · 06/11/2019 06:33

Rees-Mogg has no clue what it's like to be a 'normal' citizen struggling on the breadline. Stormzy described him as an 'actual alien' and I agree.

Why are people so far removed from the orbit of ordinary folk 'representing' them?

bellabasset · 06/11/2019 07:08

What a ridiculous comment, there was one unlit smoke filled staircase with firemen going up and for people to come down smoke filled.

He should be ashamed of himself, a government minister responsible for setting laws, this should have never have happened had that property been fit for purpose.

StoneofDestiny · 06/11/2019 07:38

Tory Andrew Bridgen has suggested Rees -Mogg was “cleverer” than those who died and that’s why we want clever people like him in government!

How can people put Johnson, Rees Mogg and their hideous party in charge of this country?

StoneofDestiny · 06/11/2019 07:49

Don’t forget the attitude of the ‘Leader of the House of Commons’ to The House of Commons - and therefore, the attitude to the voting public!

Rees Mogg uses common sense to flee burning building.
