I love hummus. . Didn’t know anything about this, though So Thanks for the heads up.
I’ve just been through the list and didn’t notice Tesco one on there or Markseys. I assume they must be okay.

Creepster · 05/11/2019 00:59

Thanks! That is not something I would ever have thought of being contaminated.
I do as a previous poster suggested and make it up myself to keep a supply in the freezer.

TheFormidableMrsC · 05/11/2019 01:03

I saw them staff taking all the hummus, all varieties, off the shelf in my local Aldi last Monday. Chap just said ‘this has all got to go’. This explains it!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 05/11/2019 01:08

Laughing at the idea of an opened pot of houmous lasting more that a day in the fridge.

ViktoriaLukas · 05/11/2019 01:10

M&S and Co-op had plenty out yesterday so I assume theirs are made in a different factory.

WatcherintheRye · 05/11/2019 01:26

So same hummus, same factory, different labels, different price.

When I was a student in the early 80s, lots of us did summer work at the local Mr. Kipling cake factory. It was a revelation to me that they also packed cakes for many shops' 'own' brands, and the price difference between the most expensive and the cheapest, for the same cake was 11p!

Also hygiene was appalling - e.g. workers going to the loo and not washing hands, cloths being used to wipe the floor, then the inside of a mixing vat - so I wonder if poor hygiene is at the root of this outbreak?

I used to eat hummus (hummous?) quite regularly from some of the places listed so I'm glad I went off it as I have emetophobia and vomiting is an absolute nightmare for me!

safariboot · 05/11/2019 02:01

Dang. I probably ate some of the stuff. (But maybe not if Tesco wasn't affected.)

I've not had any issues at least.

It makes me think retailers should be more proactive about recalls. If you use a loyalty card then the retailer knows what you bought when and has your contact details. If you pay by credit or debit card contact details could be had from the bank. The retailers should be notifying purchasers directly, not waiting and hoping people read the news or an in-store sign.

Hummus sandwiches are lovely. Seeded bread, spinach, sliced peppers, tomato and an extra squeeze of lemon.

Making it's easy enough. Means you can make it as garlicky, lemony or whatever-y as you like. I don't add oil - takes seconds dumped into a mini blender thing. And now there's no added Salmonella, too.

IceniSky · 05/11/2019 06:00

I've made it so many times and never tastes as nice. Maybe it's too much olive oil or raw garlic I can taste. Any good recipes anyone has adapted?

Twitney · 05/11/2019 06:57

But wasn't the affected ingredient the tahini/ sesame? Surely that means you could be affected by making it at home too?

MitziK · 05/11/2019 07:04

There's no recall on tahini in itself or tinned chickpeas. So homemade would be fine.

stucknoue · 05/11/2019 07:10

I had the Aldi ones and had ate them, checked the dates in the recycling just now .... all fine. Just precautionary

stucknoue · 05/11/2019 07:12

Ps I regularly have it open for a week and eat it out of date ... I think some people are more susceptible than others to food poisoning

fairislecable · 05/11/2019 07:46

I find the tahini paste is sort of strong tasting and saw a recipe that left it out and put in feta cheese instead that was lovely.

According to. Ottolenghi he never puts oil in it just a drizzle on top at the end.

Really useful to know you can freeze it I will definitely be trying that.
