Are you really that bothered about shared toilets?

We were discussing this in work the other day. I really dont care about sharing toilets with males but some of the other women are really annoyed about the idea.

Are you annoyed about this? If so, what isit that you dont like about it? Do you think that the men will perve?

Yes, I really am completely bothered. There were mixed sex toilets (multiple lockable cubicles) at a University I visited recently. Felt totally and utterly wrong to be going in through the main door to those with random strange men, I hated it.

Helmlover1 · 03/11/2019 20:27

No I don’t feel comfortable with mixed sex toilets and I really hope they don’t become the ‘norm’. I simply refuse to use them.

DramaAlpaca · 03/11/2019 20:27

I hate the idea of unisex toilets. I haven't come across any yet & if I did I wouldn't feel comfortable using them.

Scabz · 03/11/2019 20:33

I really don't mind them

AufderAutobahn · 03/11/2019 20:36

I would be very uncomfortable with mixed sex loos. And, like most women, I have had quite enough harassment in my life from idiot men already and I need to have places where I am pretty much guaranteed to be free of it.

theconstantinoplegardener · 03/11/2019 20:36

I hate shared loos, and try to avoid using them. The stalls with shared handwashing facilities and mirrors are the worst, because I find it humiliating to deal with the aftermath of a messy period in front of men. And no, this isn't due to society conditioning me that periods are dirty or shameful; I'd feel exactly the same if I had to deal with diarrhoea in this scenario. I don't even like the individual cubicles with their own hand wash basins, as they inevitably seem to feature urine-splashed seats which I don't want to sit on. There is also a growing problem of spy cams being installed in these toilets if men have unfettered access to them.

Yes.

MesmorisedByTheLights · 03/11/2019 20:42

I don't care if it's a single, lockable room. We have them at our workplace for both staff and customers.
I don't feel comfortable with multi-occupancy unisex toilet.

Millie2013 · 03/11/2019 20:44

There are a few coffee shops around here with shared toilets, coffee #1, et al. Without exception, they are rank. Wee on the seats/floor, etc. I avoid them like the plague

Slazengerbag · 03/11/2019 20:46

I wouldn’t use a shared loo. I do not want to walk on to a room away from public eyes and cctv when a man could be in there. When I was younger it didn’t bother me and I wouldn’t of thought twice. Now I’m older I feel more vulnerable even though nothing has ever happened to warrant these feelings.

ButterflyBitch · 03/11/2019 20:46

Yes. I don’t have to explain why. We have single sex provision for a reason.
You may be happy to share. Great, good for you. We need mens, womens and mixed. That way everyone can be happy.

InsertFunnyUsername · 03/11/2019 20:47

It just makes no sense IMO. Let's stop wolf whistling so women can walk down the road without feeling intimidated, Let's crack down on boss/employee power imbalance so women feel comfortable at work. Let's stop unnecessary physical contact between employees so people dont feel their boundaries are being crossed.

After that we will take away a woman's safe space where most are quite vulnerable. (Knickers down, changing sanpro, with young children) etc. But people cant see the issue 🤷‍♀️

InsertFunnyUsername · 03/11/2019 20:47

I did have paragraphs 🙄

Charles11 · 03/11/2019 20:49

I hate the idea and wouldn’t feel comfortable with my young dd or her young teen cousin going in by themselves if I knew there were men in there. I don’t think they would either.

Pukkatea · 03/11/2019 20:51

Unisex toilets are rubbish for everyone. Men piss everywhere and women take hours in the toilet.

My friend is very afraid to go in one after someone attempted to rape her in a unisex toilet, and I imagine many others have personal reasons why they wouldn't want to go in.

doublebarrellednurse · 03/11/2019 20:55

I'm not uncomfortable with it personally and have been in unisex toilets a number of times but I'm in the privileged position of not having been raped by one nor feel particularly vulnerable in their presence.

I may feel differently if those things were different

namechangetheworld · 03/11/2019 20:56

It doesn't bother me in the slightest. Having a shit or changing a sanitary towel is awkward whether you're in a cubicle next to a man or a woman IMO.

Sandsnake · 03/11/2019 20:57

Personally I wouldn’t like it, especially at work. Can’t quite put my finger on it, but it’s something to do with privacy / hygiene. I probably wouldn’t be particularly bothered by a one off occasion of a female identifying biological male using a women’s toilet that I was in.

However, these are just my personal feelings. I am very much aware that other women have very good reasons to be far more weary of sharing toilet facilities with biological males.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/11/2019 20:58

Centuries ago in my youth, I sometimes used toilets as a refuge from creepy blokes
There would often be other women there and it was reassuring to go outside with them

pooopypants · 03/11/2019 20:59

I don't give a shit if they have individual sinks etc inside each cubicle

See what I did there.....

I also don't see how you'd be at any more risk of a sexual assault by having mixed toilets, but I'll happily be educated on that one

ballpitbonanza · 03/11/2019 21:00

Yes.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/11/2019 21:04

Main reason is that unisex facilities are more dangerous for women - crime stats prove that

Secondary reason is privacy
Many women would avoid going to the loo outside, if they were all unisex

Also, for women of some ethnic minorities, having only unisex loos could restrict them going out, as it did women in the Victorian era
and as it restricts / endangers women in some developing countries now.

Crazy that while feminists in developing countries are campaigning for more single sex loos,
the "oh-so-clever advanced West" is going backwards

Candle1000 · 03/11/2019 21:05

We have 2 cubicles at work that can be used by men and women , each cubicle has its own sink , this doesn’t bother me. I would hate it though if it was an airport type set up where men and women queued for a cubicle and shared hand washing facilities.
