To wonder if people aren't bothering with fireworks this year?

I know bonfire night isn't officially until Tuesday, but usually there's have been fireworks going off all week round here and especially this evening, being the Saturday before.

It's really, really quiet here. Sainsburys aren't selling them this year, I wondered whether the mood is that people aren't bothering so much this year?

Haven't seen lots of threads on mumsnet this year either.

There have been fireworks going off every night for three weeks here and we are currently caught between 2 major displays. There were also 3 pub displays yesterday.

BendingSpoons · 02/11/2019 18:14

There are loads going off round here, tonight and last night. I wouldn't be surprised if the weather put some people off though.

Topseyt · 02/11/2019 18:19

Quiet here too at the moment. I'm glad really.

The organised displays are all tonight in this area. The nearest are about 7 miles from here though, and usually pretty good.

The weather is pretty awful though, so maybe that is why it is quiet.

loutypips · 02/11/2019 18:21

I'm lucky that in the area I live in has some excellent free displays. I'd much rather go to one of those than watch some crappy fireworks in someone's garden.
There were a few fireworks going off last night, I expect more tonight although the weather is really bad.
Much different to living in London where they were going off every night from September to New Years!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 02/11/2019 18:24

Quiet here so far. I’m pleased (scared dog)

isseywith4vampirecats · 02/11/2019 18:26

got them going off at the back of my house now, we also have an asian community near us so every time theres a wedding we get them which seems to be at least once a week

countrygirl99 · 02/11/2019 18:30

Sounds like an artillery bombardment round here this evening.

Erismorn · 02/11/2019 18:30

Awful weather here (south east coast) so all the organised displays have been cancelled and I can't imagine anyone will be having garden fireworks etc.

Next weekend will probably make up for it!

Gingaaarghpussy · 02/11/2019 18:31

Got some currently going off here, heard some earlier in the week and theres an organised event on the 6th.
I will be watching out of my window, with my cat wondering what I'm looking at. Grin

Topseyt · 02/11/2019 18:33

I have a scared dog too, who used to try and burrow through the floor if fireworks were going off.

He is 15 now and has gone pretty deaf in his old age though, so he is much less aware of them now. That does have some minor advantages.

mogtheexcellent · 02/11/2019 18:33

Haven't heard anything round here yet. Our big village display is next weekend though.

ScreamingCosArgosHaveNoRavens · 02/11/2019 18:34

They've been going off all week where I live - during daylight too. Great fun for my cats and dog - not. Sad

Treaclepie19 · 02/11/2019 18:34

It's not quiet here. I really wish it was, they're bloody annoying.

Deelish75 · 02/11/2019 18:45

I’ve not heard anything tonight. There’s normally a really big display on but is still raining and quite windy (tho not as bad as before) so I don’t know if the display is going ahead. We normally go to it but my kids have been ill this week so we were going to give it a miss - wandering now if they’ll postpone it until next week.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 02/11/2019 18:46

Ugh lucky you! It started here in mid October and it won't stop until New Year. The cat is too old and grumpy to care but the dog does.

GooseFeather · 02/11/2019 18:48

There's been loads round here so I have been staying at home as much as possible. Had to go out late yesterday afternoon. Was back barely after dusk and still came back to the attached destruction. Poor dog had panicked and got herself trapped in the loo. That's me stuck at home for the next week at least.

Really quiet around here, but we're surrounded by floods atm so think that's why several local displays have been cancelled.

There was a huge kick off on FB when a local school did a display last week (lots of horses and livestock in the area). Hopefully people are becoming a bit more aware of the bloody nuisance that fireworks are.

GooseFeather · 02/11/2019 18:49

What happened to the photos?

Had some most nights this week due to Diwali I assume. Last night some aresholes let off several huge bangs that shook the house, no pretty lights just sounds like bombs going off. Some going off at random hours in the night in spite of their being a 'curfew'.

Tonight they are in full force, along with sirens now.

BTW, retailers are unable to return unsold fireworks and often make a loss on them, so Sainsburys might not be doing it for the reasons we are meant to believe. Either way I am pleased they aren't selling them but it only means people will buy elsewhere.

I don't care what people do to themselves through carelessness, ignorance and selfishness, I do care about the harm inflicted on others, physical and mental and innocent creatures.

Italy has at least started using silent fireworks. Shame they seem to be alone in this.

MoobaaMoobaa · 02/11/2019 18:52

started about 2 weeks ago round here.

Crochetymum · 02/11/2019 18:53

I wish they would ban them completely! Some dosy neighbour.of mine had a load last night and scared my dog to death, he thought the world was ending I'm sure. In the past few weeks there's been people letting them off in the day 🤷.Accidents waiting to happen in the hands of pissed up idiots. Organised displays I suppose not too bad but when you have a scared animal, it's just all I think about.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 02/11/2019 18:54

This. Some UTTER FUCK keeps letting these off at about 7pm every night since 30 October and it’s bang (pardon the pun) when the children are literally dropping off.

I know it’s a free country and all but who actually has the fucking time and arsedness to piss about every night lighting blue touch papers and standing well back and suchlike.

DontCallMeShitley · 02/11/2019 18:55

@GooseFeather, your poor dog Sad. I saw a post on FB earlier showing how to use bandages or fabric on a dog if you don't have a Thundershirt. If I were you I would put a little tight t shirt or something on him/her if you have one.

Classic FM might help too, www.classicfm.com/radio/shows-presenters/pet-sounds/with-bill-turnbull-back-2019/
