To wonder if people aren't bothering with fireworks this year?

I know bonfire night isn't officially until Tuesday, but usually there's have been fireworks going off all week round here and especially this evening, being the Saturday before.

It's really, really quiet here. Sainsburys aren't selling them this year, I wondered whether the mood is that people aren't bothering so much this year?

Haven't seen lots of threads on mumsnet this year either.

Absolutely throwing it down here, so I think people have been put off, however have heard some going off. I don't think we are bothering, raining tonight, DH and DD2 are going to ice hockey tomorrow, and Mon/Tues DH is likely to want to see his mum who is in hospital.

mogtheexcellent · 02/11/2019 20:02

Mog dog is a rescue - been with us 7 months. She's been out in the garden and fireworks are going off in a house at the back of us. She ignored them and is now curled up in her bed asleep. Will be interesting to see if any closer and louder fireworks have any effect on her.

Fuckwheresitgone · 02/11/2019 20:04

Just got back from a 'silent' fireworks display, no bangs at all....bloody brilliant and so awesome seeing bright pretty lights and almost completely silent!

HelenaDove · 02/11/2019 20:09

Got loads going off around here.......and its a poorer area

GeneHuntLover · 02/11/2019 20:11

Loads here but there's 3 different events tonight

PearlsBeforeWine · 02/11/2019 20:14

My dog is a narky little minx and if I put dog programmes she starts barking and calms. Down a fair bit.

katmarie · 02/11/2019 20:23

We live about 500 feet from a local attraction which has just had its annual display, the house was shaking, two terrified dogs and a terrified toddler all trying to climb in my lap. We had to push toddlers bedtime back, absolutely no point trying to put him to bed until it finished. They did write to us a couple of weeks ago warning us the event was on and the start and finish times, but you cant exactly tell a dog it will be over in 20 minutes.

GladAllOver · 02/11/2019 20:25

Wishful thinking.
The sooner fireworks are limited to licensed displays, the better.

PepePig · 02/11/2019 20:28

We have ones going off as we speak. Been going since mid October. I can't wait til they're done. All they do is scare animals and wake my baby up Angry

JessicaRarebit · 02/11/2019 20:30

We’re going to a fireworks display at Vicky park tomorrow. We’ve been every year for the last few years. It’s really lovely.

PickAChew · 02/11/2019 20:37

There's just been a display on at the local school (not organised by the school, just using the massive field) and autistic DS2 has been watching it out of the window and doing his firework impression that goes something like pfffft

Not many out and about though the odd household has set a few off and some young charmers chucked a firecracker in my direction, the other night.

dementedma · 02/11/2019 20:41

Central Scotland here and its been very quiet compared to previous years. I work with Veterans and some of them become very distressed by the bangs and flashes of the fireworks.

mommybear1 · 02/11/2019 20:56

God I'd love to be where you are OP it's horrendous here (Midlands) at least four organised local events and umpteen neighbours setting them off - my 2yo is beside himself 😤I'm currently white noise maxing my phone, DH phone and both our work phones to try to drown it out.

Candle1000 · 02/11/2019 20:58

They’ve been going off for the last couple of hours here- luckily the cat doesn’t seem too bothered by them.

Lostsocksaresoannoying · 02/11/2019 21:13

Perhaps it's the bad weather that's putting people off here, there are some going on now but it's way way quieter than previous years, it's been quiet all week too.

I think they'll eventually be banned from public sale altogether.

@DontCallMeShitley does that work like a pressure blanket type of thing, having a thing tied like that or a tight top on?

We've had fireworks for a few weeks, they happen quite a lot round here but mostly every day or so for several weeks at this time of year. The town display is postponed til tomorrow because of the weather but it's still been seriously loud because of personal displays.

thegirlanachronism · 02/11/2019 21:27

It's very quiet where I am but I don't know of that's due to the awful weather or if people just generally don't do fireworks around here (it's our 1st year in the village). I know a couple of displays in neighbouring villages were cancelled tonight so it might just be that.

DontCallMeShitley · 02/11/2019 21:44

@ClapHandsAndSaveTheFairies As far as I know it works like a Thundershirt or a tight fitting child's T shirt. I first learned about these things from a friend who has a sanctuary and a selection of stressed and scared dogs.
I have seen it with fabric/bandages and also scarves if that is all you have.
The music might also help.

mamaduckbone · 02/11/2019 21:50

Our local display was cancelled due to the ridiculous amount of rain we've had recently so we haven't bothered. We had some friends round and had sparklers and a very pathetic couple of fireworks in the garden. Attempted to light a fire but it was too damp.

ymf117 · 02/11/2019 21:57

I think it should just be organised displays only. We had a firework come over and set fire to our trampoline a few years back, so bloody dangerous!

Yoohoo16 · 02/11/2019 22:07

Lots around her. My parents 2 dogs were so stressed this evening, one of them had done huge piles of sick throughout the downstairs.

Pollaidh · 02/11/2019 22:14

A lot quieter than usual in my city, and not just because the weather means the big show has been cancelled - there has been a notable reduction. Normally we have about 3 weeks of multiple displays every night and as I have PTSD, it's awful as the bangs force me into repeated flashbacks.

floatygoat · 04/11/2019 09:18

One of my arse hope neighbours set a load off last night between 7-9pm. I know these people and know they are fully aware of how much distress it causes to pets, livestock and wildlife.....so why the fuck do they do it?
Sociopaths??
