Is this weird

Four adults go out for an evening meal. One adult gets a kids meal. Is this weird.

Nothing wrong with that - some restaurants give huge portions, of excessively rich/fatty foods. If getting a kids meal means a more appropriate portion for you, that's fine

CaraConcerned · 01/11/2019 18:40

Nope. I have a family member who prefers to eat little and often. Kids' portions can also be quite big at some places!

Spied · 01/11/2019 18:41

I sometimes get a kids meal. I have reflux problems and like to eat little and often. I also like relatively plain food.
If I was out for an evening meal that was quite a formal affair ( dressed up etc) then I think I'd feel a bit daft getting kids meal and would get an adult portion.

livingthegoodlife · 01/11/2019 18:43

Nothing wrong with a kids sized portion but if the adults were eating say lamb shank and veg and the kids meal was fish fingers, chips and beans then I might inwardly roll my eyes.

I often order kids meatballs from IKEA, much better size for lunch.

Whatisthisfuckery · 01/11/2019 18:43

What would the meal an adult orders at a restaurant have to do with you? Maybe they weren’t that hungry?

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 01/11/2019 18:45

Depends on the restaurant Imo, are we talking harvester or somewhere a bit posher?

Reachedsohigh · 01/11/2019 18:45

I always order a kids meal, an adult one would be wasted as I have a tiny appetite. I'm not paying for something I won't eat and I'm not bothered if people think I'm weird.

Enoughnow12 · 01/11/2019 18:47

@Whatisthisfuckery why are you so cross at someone asking a question? How do you know it's not me who ordered a kids meal?

OP posts:
Morgomargot · 01/11/2019 18:48

I think it depends what they eat. If they got the kids meal because they weren't that hungry then no it's not weird, but if they got the kids meal because all they will eat is baked beans, chips and burgers then yes it is very weird.

Stampy84 · 01/11/2019 18:48

If an adult is going to order a child’s portion, but still willing to pay an adult price- then it’s okay.

Tableclothing · 01/11/2019 18:49

I wouldn't, but who cares what other people eat?

iklboo · 01/11/2019 18:50

My mum only eats small portions. She always asks if she can have a child sized meal.

Tableclothing · 01/11/2019 18:51

I don't understand why they should pay for something they haven't eaten.

Sparklingbrook · 01/11/2019 18:51

I hope they had one of these for dessert.

Interestedwoman · 01/11/2019 18:53

I would think they had an eating disorder or were uptight about food or something.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 01/11/2019 18:53

Depends.

Pub meal = not weird
Posh restaurant = weird

Venger · 01/11/2019 18:54

I wouldn't call it weird, some people do just have bland tastes or limited diets and prefer that sort of food.

If an adult is going to order a child’s portion, but still willing to pay an adult price- then it’s okay.

If they're paying for their own food then why does it matter? And if someone else is paying then it will cost that person less so, again, why does it matter?

80skid · 01/11/2019 18:54

Have they had a gastric band fitted? Or just a small appetite? Regardless of the reason, it's their business and theirs only (assuming it's not for money reasons, then perhaps it would be worth eating elsewhere)

AmIThough · 01/11/2019 18:54

I wouldn't find it particularly weird.

Dollymixture22 · 01/11/2019 18:55

Some restaurants refuse to serve adults meals form the children’s menu. But not weird.

I get children’s meals when getting fish and chips or Chinese - just more sensible portions.

iklboo · 01/11/2019 18:55

@Sparklingbrook - I SO want one of those now! Grin

OnlineShopping · 01/11/2019 18:57

No, not at all. Some people just have starters as a main meal and lots of pubs will do small versions of their main meals which can be either for children or for adults who don’t want to eat so much.

Portion size and our perceived view of it is a big contributor to obesity.

Whitleyboy · 01/11/2019 18:59

It isn't weird at all.

I've often thought we should buy my DM a child's meal as she eats like a sparrow and wastes most of what's on her plate. If all restaurants/pubs served child portions of the adult menu rather than complete crap I'd definitely suggest it.

I also have a friend who's had a gastric bypass and she does this as she can't consume much at all.

MadnessInMethod · 01/11/2019 18:59

Lots of times I'll order a starter as a starter, then another starter as my main meal.

Can't say I pay that much attention to what others order and if kids meals aren't "chips n nuggets" I'd happily order a children's portion.

eddiemairswife · 01/11/2019 19:00

Some places give absolutely huge adult portions. I find the cheaper the restaurant the larger the portions.
