Is this weird

Four adults go out for an evening meal. One adult gets a kids meal. Is this weird.

I generally will only order a starter when I go out with my husband. I just don't eat as much as he does. If I don't get a starter, I will definitely not finish an entree sized meal and often bring home the extra for lunch the following day.

I don't ask for a child's meal most places because they are almost always the same 4-5 offerings and not entirely the kind of food I want when I go out for a treat.

Crunchymum · 01/11/2019 19:26

Oh great another competitive eating thread, or non eating thread as it usually is on MN.

isabellerossignol · 01/11/2019 19:29

Where are these restaurants that will let an adult order a kids meal? I can't even find one that lets my 13 year old have a kids meal.

Elmer2028 · 01/11/2019 19:31

Restaurants are funny about adults ordering kids meals, where are these places?

Vanhi · 01/11/2019 19:32

No, not weird. Entirely up to that person and there could be many reasons why they want that meal. It's their business.

CAG12 · 01/11/2019 19:34

Its up to the person ordering. Who cares?

Walnutwhipster · 01/11/2019 19:35

I have no stomach. Sometimes I don't eat but at most can manage half of a child's portion. I hope to goodness you made no comment.

WhoCaresWins01 · 01/11/2019 19:38

What i thought would depend on the type of restaurant and what kids meal was ordered. I would think it odd if an adult wanted fish fingers beans and chips in a nice restaurant!

TheQueef · 01/11/2019 19:40

I get a kids meal.
I can normally finish it all, no waste.

Sparklingbrook · 01/11/2019 19:41

i think I would just ask for a smaller portion of the adult meal than specifically order a child's meal.

But I agree that most places will only serve children's meals to children.

madcatladyforever · 01/11/2019 19:42

I always have a childs meal, I have a gastric band. I'd totally waste an adults meal.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 01/11/2019 19:45

I usually order a starter as a main, or a children's meal. I am currently wearing a H & M dress age 13-14yrs Grin so I think it's pretty fitting! If I go out with DH it works well as we order two mains, he eats his and two thirds half of mine, we are both happy.

Just to clarify, I am not actually age 13-14 just really small

Cannot find it in me to judge other adults' eating choices, tbh.

Oliversmumsarmy · 01/11/2019 19:47

I have done this a few years ago.

The adult menu didn’t have anything vegetarian on it that I liked so I ordered baked beans, egg and chips and everyone was jealous when it came.

QueenArseClangers · 01/11/2019 20:06

Meh, I would think the person either had a small appetite, fancied the kids’ menu or that it was none of my business!
I think an American poster said upthread that she always had a starter (her use of the word entree for main course gave the game away Smile). Our UK portions are a lot smaller than US portions so I imagine American starters would rival our main course sizes!

MintyMabel · 01/11/2019 20:12

I often have the kids meal and my 10yo eats of the main menu. She’s a far more adventurous eater than I am.

Ponoka7 · 01/11/2019 20:17

I like that more restaurants are offering 'small plates' because otherwise people who don't want a full portion (for whatever reason) have to order a children's meal.

We should leave people alone to eat whatever they want and stop all the judging.

brittabot · 01/11/2019 20:23

Occasionally (about twice!), I ordered starters as a main course as I wasn’t that hungry - the kids menu’s weren’t to my taste but if someone did want fishfingers/nuggets then I would feel it was none of my business (caveat - unless there were other indicators that it was problematic eg an eating disorder?).

MadnessInMethod · 01/11/2019 20:24

Where are all these places that will let adults order a childrens meal

If you're not eating at chain "restaurants" like Wetherspoons or Toby Carvery, then most places do the adults menu in childrens/smaller portions.

They may not state it on their website or menu but if you actually ask, most of the restaurants I eat at will do a smaller portion of their main meals.

Deadheadstickeronacadillac · 01/11/2019 20:26

I've 13 stone after having a gastric sleeve. A kids portion is the best way I have if still being able to control my portions.
Please don't be judgey, I freak out enough about asking for it anyway.

Deadheadstickeronacadillac · 01/11/2019 20:26

*lost 13 stone

TooManyPaws · 01/11/2019 20:27

Years ago in primeval times when I was young, a child's portion was simply a smaller helping of anything on the menu. No wonder people grow up to only eat beans, chips and sausages etc if that's what they've had their entire childhood. Are they supposed to miraculously acquire adult taste buds on their 18th birthday?

VenusTiger · 01/11/2019 20:27

Re. the portion size as PPs are suggesting for the reason, I’d rather have a starter (arrive with mains) than a kids meal, my DS doesn’t eat kids meals as they’re usually shite, fatty crap.
Each to their own though.

isabellerossignol · 01/11/2019 20:34

If you're not eating at chain "restaurants" like Wetherspoons or Toby Carvery, then most places do the adults menu in childrens/smaller portions.

That hasn't been my experience at all unfortunately. I've never been to a Wetherspoons or a Toby Carvery but I've never managed to get an independent restaurant to do a smaller portion of an adult meal and I've asked many times.

I have found some that will allow the kids to order a starter instead of a main course though, but those are often too small, even for a child.

PurpleDaisies · 01/11/2019 20:38

I order a child’s portion but just smell it. That’s more than enough for me. I’ve got a small appetite.

brittabot · 01/11/2019 20:47

Enoughnow12 why do you ask?
