Dh wants to buy a holiday home in a location we visit every year. At least once with kids and once alone.
We also visit other places though.
I cannot see any advantages to owning a holiday home there. Property is expensive for what you get.
We will have maintenance costs. The worry that it will be broken into when we are not there etc
Plus I think he will never want to visit anywhere else if he buys a holiday home there. While I enjoy the location it isn't somewhere I want to limit my entire future holidays to.

AIBU to think buying a holiday home is a really bad idea?

huge oversupply for both sales and rentals in some areas massive. they say there are millions of properties buit in the boom that will never ever sell and will ultimately have to be knocked down.

@sophe
What does park mean?

I mentioned the holiday fund idea today after lunch. He is going to look into it. Thinks it could be a great idea.

We will see.

Oh good. The difficulty I perceive with the fund, is gaining a high enough return that you can take enough profit to pay for hols, while also growing the fund, so the capital doesn't lose value. (Just as you'd hope your capital investment in property would gain value, while also providing free holidays).

But, it does depend what you're comparing to. Capital growth through property purchase can't be taken for granted. Plus there's all the maintenance., fees etc.

The big plus is not having to do any of the work. Just the fun part of planning the holidays.

We have a second home in France. I spend 6 totally relaxing weeks there each summer dh spends 4 as has to go back to work in weeks 3 and 4. We spend a week at Easter and go to other places in half terms. We let family and friends borrow it when we are not using it or stay with us if they wish as has 7 bedrooms so means my sister and her family can visit for a week or two then my dh niece comes for a week. We aim to retire there. The main advantage is we keep clothing and stuff there, so dh keeps golf clubs, scuba diving stuff, wet suits, surf boards and kayaks. We know our neighbours there. It is 20 mins from coast and loads to do. We travel Plymouth to Roscoff so travel 3 hours to Plymouth but only 1/2 hour at other end. Property cheap in Brittany. We got an absolute bargain. We don't let it out but lend it out and lots of people enjoy it.
