Could he win it? He is very popular and a different character to Corbyn. I think he would appeal to a lot of the electorate who are left leaning but unkeen on JC.

I have been saying about keir starmer for leader for ages. All I can do I think is vote Labour get the party in first then hope there is a leadership challenge pretty swiftly after

AnnaNimmity · 31/10/2019 20:08

I think his constituency voted LibDem in the euro elections - I wonder if he could lose his 35000 majority?! (It's a hard core remain area).

he's very arrogant I think, but then again, the party members are so adoring of him.

FeminismandWomensFights · 31/10/2019 20:08

^^ what Doobigetta said. Things could be so different.

It is staggering how Labour are not waiting to be the next government given the Conservative shitshow of the last few years in charge.

OverByYer · 31/10/2019 20:08

I like him. It I’d rather see Yvette Cooper or Jesse Phillips in charge.
I always used to vote Labour but won’t as long as Corbyn is in charge

saltandvinegararethebest · 31/10/2019 20:08

I also think that people overestimate the support for JC/hard left in London (which is a huge popn). Many of those now have their own homes, see the state school vs private vs catchment situation and the future job market and will think of their family first, politics second. Many also work in the private sector and while publicly shout loudly for the left, I am not sure privately are so supportive.

YANBU, Starmer, Cooper, or even Hilary Benn Would win by an absolute landslide. They are ridiculous not to even consider it.

saltandvinegararethebest · 31/10/2019 20:09

I did hear someone say that Labour don't want to be elected hence why they have gone down this route.

I think the membership would argue that they had drifted to far to the centre and Corbyn is a return to Labour values.

That said they can only do good by being in power and a centre left Labour candidate would clean up.

There are a number of candidates that would fit the bill.

Dollywilde · 31/10/2019 20:10

I’m a lib drm member. I’d vote labour in a heartbeat if momentum didn’t run the show...

WrongKindOfFace · 31/10/2019 20:10

I wouldn’t object to him. I think JC does need to go.

Yes to Cooper etc mentioned up thread.

sunglasses123 · 31/10/2019 20:11

So if Labour voters won’t support him and you voted Leave... who would you go for?

Fuzzyend · 31/10/2019 20:11

Yep it's like 2016 - if pretty much anyone except Hilary had been leader of the democratic party they would have beaten Trump.

Ego outstrips ability once again.

saltandvinegararethebest · 31/10/2019 20:11

@tired8grumpy

I didn't mean it was a strategy I would support - just surely one that tactically is preferable for them?

No?

Anyone but Corbyn and his allies. They're what's going to lose Labour this election and shoo in that hideous buffoon Johnson and his ultra-ring wing nutter cabinet.

I guess it's too late now for a leadership change. The only possibility is if JC does the decent thing and steps aside for someone more electable. Which he won't do.

Mummyshark2018 · 31/10/2019 20:13

Yes I agree. I can't vote for labour due to Corbyn. Although I agree with many of his views I just don't think he'd make a good PM. Kier would be much better.

AgeLikeWine · 31/10/2019 20:14

Labour won’t get rid of Corbyn and replace him with Starmer because the party is now controlled by the hard left faction, who don’t care about winning. Never have, never will. As an ex-Labour activist, I should know. What they do care about Is ideology, Palestine and maintaining control of the party.

80skid · 31/10/2019 20:14

Starmer would walk it. I don't see the merit of a 70 plus year old hard left leading a party into an election.

saltandvinegararethebest · 31/10/2019 20:15

I cannot believe we are effectively being asked to choose between the hard left and the hard right.

The centre will not hold, eh?

OP posts:
Sunshine93 · 31/10/2019 20:15

I am hard left. I have just had a quick look at his voting record and there are a few concerning things. For example he voted against an enquiry into the Iraq war.

Jeremy Corbyn stands for real change. I wouldn't want that watered down. If starmer he didn't change any of the labour policies then yes I'd vote for him but don't see what the point of changing leader would be. If he started changing stuff especially green new deal or universal credit I would vote greens.

I think you will find Corbyn has more support that you think. If we are wrong then obviously a new leader will most likely be chosen after the election

Just because centrists think the labour leader should be a centrist that doesn't mean is a popular view amongst those of us who are not centrists. There are a lot of us you know.

InglouriousBasterd · 31/10/2019 20:16

YANBU at all. I’d vote for labour in a heartbeat with Starmer at the helm.

Sunshine93 · 31/10/2019 20:16

You have the lib Dems in the centre. Just vote for them no?

saltandvinegararethebest · 31/10/2019 20:17

@AgeLikeWine to what end, Age? What do they get from it?

I listened to JC today on the live cast and I watched him yesterday in Parliament talking about Grenfell. The man must recognise what keeps the ship afloat.

OP posts:
Sunshine93 · 31/10/2019 20:18

Although I agree with many of his views I just don't think he'd make a good PM. Can you articulate why not?

Andysbestadventure · 31/10/2019 20:20

Labour isn't Labour any more. It is Momentum in a Labour tshirt. Please can people stop voting assuming that 'Labour is Labour' because they really are not! Momentum are horrifying. Genuinely. If they get in power we (especially women) will be more fucked than if we had Tory leaderships for the next century.

saltandvinegararethebest · 31/10/2019 20:20

@Sunshine93 Thank you for commenting. I just think Labour will lose with JC - the electorate are not ready for him. The previous generation of Labour voters have lived through good times and I don't think many of those who are comfortable will vote to jeopardise that now they have tasted a good life. And they are sizeable.

think a lot will shift to LibDems
