The 2020 election is ONE YEAR FROM TODAY!!

We're (almost officially) 'short-timers'.

Lawdy. I still haven't recovered from the last one (or got back into a reasonable sleep pattern since watching the results come in on that night).

On the World Service this morning I heard a news item in which it was plain that while the Trump administration is determinedly preventing people (dreamers) who have lived in America from infancy from becoming citizens, it is also dunning anyone born to an American parent anywhere in the world for back taxes -- even if that person has never set foot in the USA, and had no idea they were counted as a US citizen nor the least desire to be one.

I guess Trump's personal tax issues occupy the headlines and the sneaky stuff barely makes a ripple.

Stephanopolous.

Good job he's so vain. Otherwise we'd only have a filtered version of what goes through his head.

That interview with Rachel Maddow about her book was fascinating.

She asks the question WHY Putin would put so much effort into attacking the 2016 election, when doing so risked more retaliatory embargoes.

She comes up with the answer "oil & gas". Russia has an economy smaller than Texas, or South Korea, and it's a one-trick economy: oil & gas. This gives it power over the neighbouring countries it supplies, but is also is a vulnerability for Russia.

Keeping enough control of the global oil & gas markets is really important for Russia.

She makes the link to the appointment of Rex Tillerson as secretary of state by Trump. Says he was in no way a friend of Trump, but is someone who had done major oil & gas deals with Russia.

(I don't know anything about this area, and so can't comment, but very interesting to hear.)

'Ian Bremmer, a political scientist who founded the Eurasia Group, said: "Honestly surprised to see Trump booed at Ultimate Fighting Championship. This should be his crowd."

Another Twitter user, Keating Thomas, said: "Trump got booed at a UFC match? That's like if Bernie [Sanders] got booed at a vegan bakery in Brooklyn."'

cozietoesie · 04/11/2019 01:09

I guess it's the book that's causing it.

I didn't realise that she was responsible for the expose on Flint.

Impressive.

I saw this last night and hesitated to post it because it made me wonder if it was deliberate disinformation designed to undermine the whole whistle-blower allegations.

It is both plausible and terrible.

Very Trumpian.

'It is that Kushner (allegedly) gave the green light to MBS to arrest the dissident journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, who was later murdered and dismembered in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. A second source tells Cockburn that this is true and adds a crucial twist to the story. This source claims that Turkish intelligence obtained an intercept of the call between Kushner and MBS. And President Erdogan used it to get Trump to roll over and pull American troops out of northern Syria before the Turks invaded.'

Roussette · 04/11/2019 08:27

Lion I read about that too. To me, it sounds typical Trump and his administration behaviour, and very plausible.

If it is true, it's yet another crime and misdemeanour .....

lionheart · 04/11/2019 12:10

If it's true, I wonder how Kushner sleeps at night.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 04/11/2019 14:20

Truly horrific. Kushner is a loser like his FIL - playing with people’s lives in order to feel important and macho.

Meanwhile more scams and lies:

The Trump campaign has held at least 15 contests since 2018 offering the chance to win breakfast, lunch, or dinner with President Trump. Supporters are enticed to donate to Trump's campaign with promises of free travel, accommodations, and an "epic" meal with Trump at various locations across the country. An investigation by Popular Information, however, did not uncover evidence that anyone has ever actually won.

Dangling a meal with the candidate to encourage small-dollar contributions is a common tactic in modern presidential politics. Campaigns are typically eager to publicize these meals because: 1. They show the candidate interacting with average Americans, and 2. They encourage more people to enter the next contest

It has honestly taken me a few hours to rap my head around the implications of the Kushner phone call.

1-It's basically green lighting a murder. Sure Kush can say wide-eyed "Oh, but I had NO idea!!!" but that means he's lying or that he's too stupid and ignorant to be involved in 'diplomacy' of any kind. Or both. Probably both.

2-Scrotus has allowed himself to be blackmailed to 'save' his Son-in-law. This has basically allowed a hostile take over of Kurd territory and has resulted in the deaths of many innocent Kurdish people and the (apparent) release of ISIS-terrorist prisoners who are now free to rejoin terrorist cells. This is a crime against humanity.

If this can be proven true, just by itself it is grounds for impeachment and any politician or member of the Administration who still backs the Scrotus Regime is guilty by association.

But I'm afraid it will come down to 'yes you did/no I didn't'.
