Although I can see the US commentators already saying that Corbyn's failure shows that the US needs a moderate rather than a left-ish candidate.

I don't think the comparisons hold up.

Boris Johnson is nothing like Trump
Trump is as dumb as a rock, Boris is highly educated, Machiavellian no doubt but they are just not in the same league.
Trump is indulging himself (not that he ever does anything else) when he describes Boris as Britain's Trump.
I think Trump is Britain's Corbyn, he'll think he can win the election but there will be a landslide against him.
Won't it be glorious to watch his face when that happens🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞

So the danger of Johnson is his policies not being good for the rank and file people of the UK?

I see the Tories as akin to the GOP in that they are not concerned with social welfare and equality but are very concerned that the 'ruling class' (kind of an archaic term) stay the 'ruling class'.

Trump makes stupid and dangerous policies in his ignorance and egoism. Johnson will make equally dangerous policies, but they'll be well thought out? He seems such a buffoon. Is that a 'cover' to make him seem less Machiavellian?

I am living for that day Rhino. 325 days to go. Well, 326 until the results will be in. Less than a year.

In other news, it's expected that the impeachment vote will take place this morning, the JC reconvenes in about an hour.

YouretheChristmasCarcass · 13/12/2019 12:53

Oh, to clarify; this is not the vote to actually impeach. This is the committee vote to move the Articles to the full House for a vote. The full House vote will be the vote to impeach.

RhinoskinhaveI · 13/12/2019 12:55

For me the defining feature of Trump is that he is inept and unfit for his office, I'm not trying to say that Boris is a good guy but he's not in Trump's league of ineptitude

PerkingFaintly · 13/12/2019 15:54

Johnson will make equally dangerous policies, but they'll be well thought out?

They may well be dangerous, but they won't be thought out. Well, not be Johnson anyway. (By Cummings, yes.)

I agree with RhinoskinhaveI that Johnson isn't in the Trump league of ineptness, but he is inept and does have the same lust for a crown and contempt for the rule of law that Trump has.

That's the bit that makes him dangerous, because Johnson will do whatever he believes serves himself best, and not care who or what gets broken.

One of the differences between them, though, is that Johnson understands there may be some consequences if he's caught; Trump's tiny brain can't really grasp that, other than as a reptilian, in-the-trap-right-now way.

Another is that Johnson understands (brags) that he's lazy and incompetent, and drafts other people in to do the real work. He does have a vague understanding that there is some work to be done –although he underestimates it because he's never done it.

Trump doesn't understand that he's incompetent, or that there is any work to be done. He thinks he bangs his magic fist on the desk and shouts, and the world will change around him.

YouretheChristmasCarcass · 13/12/2019 16:12

So it sounds as if Trump and Johnson are the same, but different. 😆🤷🏼‍♀️

Cmte vote was along party lines, Articles will go the the full House. I haven't heard when a vote is expected.

And interesting side note. Ranking minority member Collins was outraged when Nadler abruptly adjourned late last night and said the vote would be this morning. Apparently he was pissed because the GOP contingent wanted the vote to be late in the night so they could bay like self-righteous hounds about 'holding the vote in the dark of night'. Similar to their outrage about the hearings being 'held in the basement'. 🙄 I guess when you don't have right on your side, you holler about the 'setting'.

Thanks for the giggle lion

I found this guide to the impeachment process in the NYT to be very clear and easy to understand.
